1982-04-10: Celtic 2-1 Rangers, Premier Division

Trivia

  • Celtic ban live commentary from Radio Clyde and Radio Scotland in an effort to entice fans back to the game.
  • The clip does not show the Celtic team. Graham McColl's book is wrong on the Celtic team with Moyes clearly playing from the start as the No. 5. McColl has McAdam as No. 5.
  • McAdam was fielded as emergency striker due to injuries to McGarvey and Nicholas. This was his first game as a Celtic striker since April 1979.

Review

Celtic went into this game with a depleted side. First choice strikers McGarvey, McCluskey and Nicholas were all out with injury and McGrain, Provan and Burns all played through the pain barrier despite being nowhere near 100% fit. In a make shift attack Tom McAdam was reinstated to the striker's role after a 3 year spell at centre half and young 19 year old forward Danny Crainie made his Old Firm debut.
It was a warm windy day and the pitch was fiery and bare in places. Celtic attacked from the kick off and Crainie sensationally scored after only 90 seconds. Burns ran from midfield and sent Sullivan clear on the right. His shot was sclaffed across goal and Crainie arrived at the back post to bundle the ball past Jim Stewart. After this goal Rangers came back at Celtic and Russell hit the bar after a fine free kick move with Cooper.
In 50 minutes McClelland gave away a foul with a needless foul on Crainie. From the free kick Burns crossed to McAdam who headed in at the back post. Rangers fought back with Derek Johnstone giving young Celtic centre half Davie Moyes a torrid time. Johnstone hit the bar and then Sullivan saved Celts when he headed a McClelland effort off the line.
Johnstone eventually scored with a fine volley which took a slight deflection off McGrain. He then gesticulated to the Celtic fans in the Jungle who had taunted him with needless offensive chants. Despite further Rangers pressure Celtic held on and McNeill hailed his walking wounded at the end.
