“It was a lottery out there. The players had no freedom of movement at all, and the fact that there were two bookings was largely due to the underfoot conditions.”

From a Newspaper Report
Celtic got off to the best start possible when Davie Provan put them ahead after only a minute. Provan’s opener came from a free-kick on the edge of the Kilmarnock penalty box, he very cleverly flighted the ball in and as it turned towards the goal it struck the post as it went past goalkeeper McCulloch.

That was the only goal of the first half in a game that showed very little for the supporters.

The pitch looked brick hard and the players were sliding about in all directions. Celtic never came close to their best and Kilmarnock were well below their best too.

In the second half Celtic struck another three times. The second came from a header by Tom McAdam. He was left all alone to head in a Davie Provan corner-kick, and he made no mistake with it.

There was no way back for Kilmarnock after that and Celtic scored again with 15 minutes to go. MacLeod’s determination got him to the bye-line then he put a great cross into the goalmouth where Frank McGarvey met it to score the third.

Tommy Burns got the fourth in the 80th minute and was the best thing on show in the entire match. The midfielder got on to the end of a Danny McGrain pass, and shot home with a tremendous drive from outside the Kilmarnock box.

An easy win in the end for Celtic, but not one that will be remembered.
