Match Report

Firhill on a Tuesday night was to be the first time Brian McClair played for Celtic on British soil, it was to be the first time most Celtic fans could welcome Davie Hay and Frank Connor back into the Celtic fold.

It was also the semi-final of the city’s own competition – the Glasgow Cup.

On a fine August evening, a good crowd turned out and let the new manager know what they thought of him, chanting his name before kick-off.

The crowd, who welcomed each Celt individually, had faith in their team. The papers had made it look as though the only person on the park likely to score a goal was Thistle’s Mo Johnston.

The press had taken a liking to the Thistle striker and tried to convince the Celtic fans that he was the man needed at Celtic Park and then put his price up of their own accord moving from near on £100,000 to £200,000 inside a week.

Was this lifelong Celtic fan going to upset the odds and tumble his own favourite team with his goalscoring ability?

Only minutes into the game it was easy to tell which team was in the higher division. With only 12 minutes gone Thistle lost any slight chance they had.

Crainie opened the scoring when he collected a pass from new bhoy Brian McClair inside the box and slipped the ball past McNab in the Partick goal.

Celtic had capitalised on their pressure and from now on it never looked as if they’d lose their advantage. They only managed to score one more goal though.

Again it was the partnership of Crainie and McClair who provided the goal. This time Danny Crainie provided the pass and Brian McClair finished with a chip over McNab. Three minutes later the Celts were applauded off the field at half-time.

Half-Time Partick Thistle 0-2 Celtic

The second half provided very little incident, but Celtic were always in command with a well organised, disciplined performance.
