Match Report

Celtic continued to pile on the League Cup goals in front of a home crowd, but it took a shock start and an almost goalless first-half to jar this game into its stride.
Both teams had started at top speed but things just did not seem to be clicking for Celtic who moved the ball about well but often had to stand back and see moves wither away.
It was ex-Celt Mike Conroy who first capitalised on a scoring chance with only four minutes of the first half remaining, Mike rose to meet a cross by Ralph Callachan and headed the ball past Bonner and into the net to give Hibs the lead.
Mark Reid had replaced the injured Brian Whittaker and made sure that Celtic only trailed for two minutes. From a Frank McGarvey pass Reid moved into the box and shot only for his effort to be blocked, but as he met the rebound, Alan Rough in the Hibs goal did not have a chance of saving.
All square at the interval. Little did anyone know what kind of show we were about to witness from Celtic in the second half.
McGarvey led the assault which gave the Celtic support the kind of football that has been enjoyed at Celtic Park for many years.
The goal that put Celtic ahead was scored in the 58th by Melrose. Provan sent over a cross which saw the striker head home brilliantly.
Another four minutes passed when Reid scored his second of the game. Roy Aitken was pushed in the penalty area and the substitute made no mistake from the spot.
With twelve minutes left, McGarvey got the reward he deserved, for his tireless work, with Celtic’s fourth, and best goal of the match. As he moved across the edge of the box he hit the ball with his left foot without breaking his stride and saw his shot beat Rough at the post.
Before the end, McGarvey was to see another piece of genius pay off. In the 85th minute he crossed for Paul McStay to head in the closing goal.
