Trivia

  • Teenager Brian McClair, nets four of the six goals.

Review

Frank McGarvey suffered an injury on Wednesday night while playing for Scotland against Uruguay at Hampden which resulted in him having seven stitches in his thigh.
This meant that Celtic lined up with the striking partnership of Jim Melrose and Brian McClair, and it is pleasing that both players found the net.
It is particularly heartening for the 19-year-old striker signed from Motherwell during the close season. He scored no less than four of Celtic’s six goals.

Match Report

This match belonged to one man, Brian McClair, who scored four of Celtic’s six goals to give them another league win and keep them at the top of the table, only one goal behind leaders Dundee United.
By no means, though, was it a one man show. It was a determined team effort that came good and gave Celtic a great victory at a park where they have found it very difficult to score or collect points in recent seasons.
Colin Kelly, in the Dundee goal, had continually denied Celtic an opening goal before the home side took the lead in the 19th minute. Brian Whittaker was adjudged to have fouled Stewart McKimmie inside the box and Ian Ferguson scored from the resulting penalty.
Three minutes later Celtic finally beat Kelly and started a high goal-scoring display. Burns was the scorer with a left-foot drive from a pass by Whittaker.
It took only another six minutes for Celtic to increase their tally and take the lead through McClair. As it seemed Provan had been fouled inside the box and everyone looked for a penalty, the 19-year-old striker shot close into the left-hand post and beat the outstretched keeper.
The half-time score was 2-1 and McClair was to add a second half hat-trick to take his total to four, his second came seven minutes after the restart, this time he collected a pass from Paul McStay and shot precisely into goal.
His next two came inside two minutes. In the 72nd minute he dived to head a Burns cross, then in the 73rd he finished from another McStay pass.
Melrose scored the sixth with a chip over the keeper in the 80th minute.
Dundee were awarded another penalty a minute later when McGrain was judged to have pushed Kidd. Ferguson again scored the spot kick.
Celtic used both subs, Sinclair replacing Whittaker and Halpin replacing Provan.
Dundee had Cammy Fraser sent off in the 69th minute.Dundee 6-2 83
