Review

A huge crowd turned out for this finely balanced second leg tie but the game was a disappointing ill tempered affair and referee Valentine had to book six players.

The appearance of Davie Provan as a second half substitute gave Celtic an extra boost. There were few chances and the game hinged on a penalty awarded in 54 minutes when Burns accepted a Provan pass on the right side of the area and beautifully turned Bell, who tripped him in attempting to recover. The Aberdeen players protested furiously and it took some time for the kick to be taken.

Mark Reid showed commendable coolness in slamming the ball home and gave Celtic their first win over Aberdeen in a season and took Celtic into the final of the League Cup.

Celtic’s defence looked solid throughout and Bonner played his part when he made a great save from a Hewitt header late in the game.
