1984-03-31: Celtic 1-0 Aberdeen, League

Trivia

  • Evening Times reports that Celtic want to bring the unsettled Charlie Nicholas back from Arsenal.

Review

Despite Celtic’s win Aberdeen still had a considerable cushion at the top of the table.

Willie McStay and Jim Melrose were both drafted in to freshen up the Celtic side and both merited their places with fine performances. Despite being dropped, Frank McGarvey had given Melrose a best of luck message before the game. McStay’s inclusion allowed Celtic to push Roy Aitken into midfield to combat the physical presence of the Aberdeen midfield.

Celtic’s goal in 35 minutes was a classic . A tremendous defence splitting pass from Burns did the damage and Melrose, for once, beat his shadow Willie Miller to delicately touch the ball past Leighton. This was the first goal Aberdeen had lost since January 7th at Ibrox.
