Review

Celtic grabbed the initiative from the very start and only fine defending by Miller prevented both McGarvey and McClair from giving Celtic the lead. Celtic’s first half dominance was rewarded in 30 minutes when MacLeod’s deep cross from the left was nodded down from McClair and for once McGarvey was in front of Miller to fire home a glorious volley.

Aberdeen were a different team in the second half and equalised within two minutes when Frank McDougall scored with a blistering shot from 20 yards. Shortly after McDougall was hauled down by Reid when he was certain to score but Pat Bonner made a dramatic save from Stark’s penalty, saving low to his right. Grant and Cooper were booked after coming to blows as Grant challenged the grounded Leighton. Despite his inexperience Grant showed he would not be intimidated by the physical play of Cooper.

Celtic grabbed the initiative back by throwing on Provan for Colquhoun. With 10 minutes left McLeish fouled McClair 25 yards out. Provan ran forward and sent a great, swerving shot past Leighton, who never moved until the ball was in the net.
