“Galloway comes forth “

KFC Germinal Ekeren 1 Celtic 1
(agg: 1-3).

MISSING out on European competition for the past two seasons has obviously sharpened Celtic's appetite. Last night Mike Galloway, hungrier than most after missing the first leg because of suspension, scored their goal, got himself booked and inadvertently broke an opponent's leg, all in the first half. Galloway scored in the 11th minute, with a thunderous shot from a headed pass from Coyne. That was taken as an invitation, if any was needed, for even noisier partisan support from the mass of Celtic followers behind that goal. Schmoller equalised in the 41st minute. The German's header from Ballenghien's cross caught Bonner too far out of his goal, but Celtic were indebted to the Irishman for repelling Schmoller's earlier efforts. Deprived in the second half of their 18-year-old Zairian winger Nsumbu, who was carried off writhing in agony with a double fracture of the leg after Galloway's challenge, the Belgian side looked far less likely to produce a further goal, for all the prodigious endeavour of Tahamata. The Dutchman, who had practically been given the freedom of Parkhead in the first leg, found far less space here. Cascarino could find space, but could do nothing with it. Three times late in the game the Irishman, who has yet to score for Celtic, could have made the game safe, but on each occasion his cumbersome attempts allowed Vande Warre to make comfortable saves.
