CELTIC'S torment continues. A combination of their own goal- scoring inhibitions, a treacherous surface at Hamilton and the enthusiasm of Second Division Clyde forced them to an unexpected replay. Coincidentally, when these teams last met in the Scottish Cup, 24 years ago, the first match also ended goalless.
The Polish full-back, Dariusz Wdowczyk, made his return for Celtic after a long absence and in four minutes he tested the Scotland Under-21 goalkeeper Scott Howie with a volley. As Celtic stepped up the pressure Wdowczyk drove a free-kick into the defensive wall only for Creaney to miss from a good position.
Just before the interval, Clyde offered the first hint of aggression. Frank McGarvey, who revelled in the opportunity to embarrass the club who sold him days after he headed their Cup winner in 1985, freed John Dickson but he hurried his shot.
Celtic maintained their dominance in the second half but could not break down the home defence although, as the match wore on, Joe Miller and Tommy Coyne were brought on and they almost produced a Celtic goal. Miller's through pass saw the Republic of Ireland striker attempt an instant volley which went narrowly wide.
In an anxious finale, McGarvey again unsettled the visitors' defence but Pat Bonner sprinted from his line to force Jamie McCarron to shoot over the bar.
