Flip of a coin gives Smith a home tie

From the archive Herald Newspaper

2 Sep 1993

A DRAW which almost degenerated into farce set up an Old Firm, Scottish League Cup semi-final, with Dundee United and Hibernian paired in the other semi. Rangers will be at home to Celtic, while United and Hibs will play their tie at Tynecastle.

The Old Firm game would have been played at Hampden, but the national stadium which is undergoing refurbishment will not be ready in time to accommodate the tie on Wednesday, September 22, and the Scottish League decided to allow Rangers and Celtic to toss a coin to decide their venue.

With Liam Brady out of the country watching Young Boys Berne, Celtic's opponents in the UEFA Cup, his assistant, Joe Jordan, stood in. He and Walter Smith tossed and as Jordan won it was announced the semi would be played at Celtic Park, but it was pointed out that Jordan had only won the toss to decide who would have call in the real thing.

Jordan called, but Smith won the toss and so Rangers secured home advantage. United and Hibs will play their tie on Tuesday, September 21.
