Trivia

  • The stand off with Di Canio continued. Despite calls from new manager Wim Jansen to get himself over to Holland he continued to remain in Glasgow and gain fitness with a personal trainer. Sheffield Wednesday were considering making an offer for him and Tommy Burns at Newcastle was urging the club to check on his availability. Newcastle put in a bid of £2.5million whilst Sheffield Wednesday were considering a swap deal with Regi Blinker. Sunderland were also said to be interested.
  • Jorge Cadete meanwhile remained in Portugal saying that he had contracted hepatitis A, a medical certificate finally being received by the club. He was then reported as seeing a counsellor and his mental health was described as ‘worrying’. The problem appeared to be that his wife refused to return top Glasgow and was seeking a divorce and custody of their daughter. Real Sociedad, Deportivo La Coruna and Benfica were said to be interested in signing the Portugese striker.
  • Celtic were said to be tracking David Zitelli then of Strasbourg. Rangers had been interested in him 5 months earlier and Schalke were also interested in taking him to the Bundesliga. Celtic were also linked to Gianluca Vialli of Chelsea and Ciriaco Sforza of Inter
  • Marc Anthony turned down the new contract offered to him by the club.
  • Peter Grant returned to Glasgow after the first game against FC Beatrix to sort out either a new contract or a move to another club. It looked likely that he would join Mark McGhee at Wolves.
  • Tosh McKinlay signed a new 2 year deal on 7/7/97
  • For this game Alan Stubbs was carrying a knock and Phil O’Donnell were ruled out with injuries.

HAY MAKE OR BREAKER

Daily Record 09/07/1997

Chris Hay caught new Celtic coach Wim Jansen's eye with a double last night but insisted he may still be forced to QUIT the club. The 22-year-old helped hoist the Bhoys' Dutch tour goal tally to 29 from two matches with another high-scoring win over the amateurs. But Hay – who arrived in Holland yesterday after attending his grandfather's funeral – fears a flood of new signings could force him out.
He said: "There's been a lot of talk about buys like Gianluca Vialli and that's why I haven't signed my contract yet.
"I'm at the age now that I can't afford to be playing in the reserves.
"Hopefully I'll have the situation sorted out over the next few months – all I want is a regular game somewhere.”

The quality of finishing in Hay's second-half double will have impressed Jansen, who is now preparing for tonight's final game against Groningen.
The First Division side will offer his squad a much greater test than they've had so far.

Last night's match – watched by former Celtic star Pierre van Hooijdonk (left) – was much tougher than Saturday's 21-goal trouncing of Beatrix but again this outfit weren't up to much.
So it was surprising that it took 45 minutes before Alan Stubbs broke the deadlock
Veere substituted their ENTIRE starting line-up at the interval and Celtic then cruised to victory.
Tommy Johnson hit the second after 58 minutes and Brian McLaughlin got No.3 with a superb chip.
Simon Donnelly struck the fourth and he notched his double minutes later.
Hay replaced Johnson and notched No.6 in the 69th minute.
Andreas Thom then netted from the penalty spot before Hay completed the rout in 89 minutes.
