Celtic 3-0 Dundee

BBC

Henri Camara scored his first goals for Celtic as the Scottish champions eased to victory over Dundee.

The striker on loan from Wolves pounced on a pass from Joos Valgaeren to side-foot past goalkeeper Derek Soutar.

John Hartson had cleared a Bobby Mann drive off the line before slotting home Celtic's second goal.

Celtic were well on top, but Dundee winger Iain Anderson's drive struck the bar before Camara drove the third goal into the corner with four minutes left.

It was just the tonic that Celtic needed ahead of their Champions League meeting with Barcelona.

Belgian international Joos Valgaeren had replaced the injured Didier Agathe as Celtic manager Martin O'Neill moved to a back three due to the full-back's absence.

Derek Soutar returned to the Dundee goal following injury and was immediately under pressure.

Stilian Petrov sent a low drive just past the upright and Bobby Mann cleared Hartson's glancing header off the line from a Petrov corner.

Juninho blazed a drive over the bar when he seemed poised to score after Soutar had clawed away a Hartson cross.

But Camara grabbed his first in the 22nd minute, when Valgaeren put him through on goal and the Senegal striker side-footed past Soutar to score his first competitive goal for the Glasgow outfit.

Hartson proved a double hero for Celtic within minutes.

First, he cleared a Mann effort off the line.

Then, after 37 minutes, he doubled Celtic's advantage when he was found by an Alan Thompson cross and had time to control the ball before forcing it past Soutar from nine yards.

Camara came within inches of doubling his tally in the last minute of the half, but his left-foot strike came back off the post.

Soutar kept Dundee in the game with a tremendous double save from Hartson and then Camara in the 53rd minute.

The visitors woke Celtic up in the 74th minute, when Anderson cut in from the right flank and unleashed a left-foot strike that came back off the crossbar.

Camara got his just rewards as he cut in from the left and fired low past the Dundee goalkeeper from 22 yards.

O'Neill praise for Camara

BBC
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill praised the developing strike partnership of Henri Camara and John Hartson as his side prepare to face Barcelona.

Camara scored twice and Hartson the other in the defeat of Dundee.

"When we signed Camara, I thought he was capable of scoring goals," said O'Neill, who has Chris Sutton doubtful.

"He will score, miss and score, but he'll get there and, if he stays clear of injury, he will have a fair quota of goals by the end of the season."

Barcelona visit Celtic Park on Tuesday in the Champions League Group F opener, a game Sutton is likely to miss with a hamstring injury, so Camara's first goals in front of the home support came at an opportune moment.

"I am really delighted for him because that's only his third start and has now scored two in front of his own crowd," said O'Neill. "That's really good news.

"John scored his fifth of the season and we'll see how things go. Obviously, with Chris still a doubt for Tuesday, I am very pleased both of them scored."

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard is considering leaving former Celtic favourite Henrik Larsson, who quit the club for the Nou Camp in the summer, on the bench in midweek.

"If you have that choice of centre-forward, which means Henrik doesn't play, it tells you the strength of their side," said O'Neill.

"I didn't need to be told that to know Barcelona are a very, very good side."

Defender Stanislav Varga hobbled off with a calf strain as Celtic comfortably moved eight points clear of arch-rivals Rangers.

"Stan had a wee bit of a calf problem, having played two matches at international level," said O'Neill.

"He has become an important player for us, which is why I took him off early, but I am hoping he's okay for Tuesday." _
