For Clyde in famous victory over Celtic 2006

Clyde twice had the ball in the net only for the officials to rule against them before Craig Bryson headed the First Division side in front. Brighton ran in to drill the ball under Boruc but referee Kenny Clark harshly ruled that Du Wei had been fouled. Clyde were sharp in attack and Alex Williams found the net after an almighty scramble in the penalty area. This time it was a linesman’s flag that came to Celtic’s rescue.
Clyde did not let the decisions get them down and took a thoroughly deserved 33rd-minute lead when Malone’s cross was missed by Boruc and Bryson stooped to head into an empty net.
Shaun Maloney came close to an equaliser when he scurried away from the Clyde defence but his low, angled shot was saved by the legs of keeper Peter Cherrie.
Du Wei’s disastrous afternoon continued when pulled down Brighton to concede a penalty only for Boruc to fling himself right to save O’Donnell’s effort. But Clyde went further ahead in the 37th minute when O’Donnell’s corner skimmed the head of Du Wei and Malone launched a wonderful volley high into the net.
O’Donnell then stole in front of Adam Virgo, a replacement for Du Wei, to crash a header against the base of the post.
On the hour, Keane found Aiden McGeady with a great pass from distance but the youngster fluffed an awkward shot with only Cherrie to beat from the edge of the penalty area.
Clyde tired as the game went on and Celtic clawed a goal back through Zurawski after 82 minutes. Celtic launched a series of long balls forward in the closing stages but the home defence coped comfortably to secure a major upset.

Comedian Paddy McDonnell has lifted the lid on a fiery exchange with Roy Keane moments after his Celtic debut calamity.

In December 2005, it was announced Keane would be leaving Manchester United as Celtic fought off competition for the star signing, with the stage set at Broadwood Stadium in front of the television cameras as Gordon Strachan’s men faced off against First Division side Clyde. However, the dream move got off to a nightmare start as the Parkhead side crashed out of the Scottish Cup with a 2-1 defeat.

That wasn’t the only reason Keane was raging after the full-time whistle though – with comic McDonnell claiming a fiery Keane pulled him up for a pre-match taunt from the stands. The Irishman lived up to his hardman reputation when he moved to silence the punter after the game. McDonnell claimed on Hot Water’s Green Room podcast: “When Roy Keane came to the club (Celtic), I knew Neil Lennon. Keane first match was against Clyde in the cup, and it was this tiny, tiny stadium.

“It was freezing. When they came I was calling him a f****** Cork Gypsy and he could hear because it was a tiny pitch. He went over to Lennon and said ‘Who the f*** is this c***?’ and Lennon was like ‘I know him, I know him” and all this.

“After the match Lennon had a match-worn top for me, and he said come and meet me outside the ground. I jumped out in front of his car and when I did an arm went round my neck and was choking me.

“All I heard was the voice. ‘Who is f****** Cork Gypsy now ya fat f****** c***?’ then Lenny is like ‘you need to let him go’. Then I look over and he’s walking away to his car and I was like holy f*** – the night that was Keane. Tears etc”

Clyde 2-1 Celtic

BBC
Roy Keane’s Celtic debut ended in shock defeat as the Scottish Cup holders were humbled by Clyde at Broadwood.

Clyde twice had the ball in the net only for the officials to cruelly rule against them before Craig Bryson headed the First Division side in front.

Celtic ‘keeper Artur Boruc then saved a penalty from Stephen O’Donnell only for Eddie Malone to stun the visitors with a volley into the top corner.

Maciej Zurawski struck late for Celtic but Clyde held on for a famous win.

Clyde, who ran Rangers close in the CIS Cup, were outstanding for the first hour and Graham Roberts’ side were worthy winners.

Keane had a very quiet game as the SPL leaders struggled to cope with their eager opponents and a badly rutted pitch.

Chinese defender Du Wei was also making his first start for Celtic and he was out-muscled by Tom Brighton early in the game.

The former Rangers youngster ran in to drill the ball under Boruc but referee Kenny Clark harshly ruled that Du Wei had been fouled.

Boruc then had to save well from a deflected Steve Masterton strike.

The underdogs were sharp in attack and Alex Williams found the net after an almighty scramble in the penalty area.

This time it was a linesman’s flag that came to Celtic’s rescue, although television replays showed that the striker was not offside.

Clyde did not let the decisions get them down and took a thoroughly deserved 33rd-minute lead when Malone’s cross was missed by Boruc and Bryson stooped to head into an empty net.

Keane had a Celtic debut to forget

Celtic striker Shaun Maloney came close to an equaliser when he scurried away from the Clyde defence but his low, angled shot was saved by the legs of keeper Peter Cherrie.

Du Wei’s disastrous afternoon continued when pulled down Brighton to concede a penalty only for Boruc to fling himself right to save O’Donnell’s effort.

Amazingly, the hapless defender went unpunished for the offence.

But Clyde went further ahead in the 37th minute when O’Donnell’s corner skimmed the head of Du Wei and Malone launched a wonderful volley high into the net.

Clyde continued their great form early in the second half, with Brighton and O’Donnell trying their luck from long range.

The hosts tired as the game went on and Celtic clawed a goal back through Zurawski after 82 minutes.

The Polish international latched on to a headed knock-down from Stephen McManus and shot past Cherrie from 20 yards.

Celtic launched a series of long balls forward in the closing stages but the home defence coped comfortably to secure a major upset.

Clyde: Cherrie, McGregor, Higgins, McKeown, Malone, Bryson (Bouadji 82), Masterton, O’Donnell, McGowan, Williams (Miller 81), Tom Brighton (Arbuckle 89). Subs Not Used: Hunter, Jarvie.

Goals: Bryson 32, Malone 36.

Celtic: Boruc, Telfer, Du (Virgo 45), McManus, Wallace (McGeady 55), Nakamura, Lennon, Keane, Pearson, Hartson (Zurawski 71), Maloney. Subs Not Used: Marshall, Lawson.

Booked: McManus. Goal: Zurawski 82.

Strachan says Clyde deserved win

Gordon Strachan
Clyde 2-1 Celtic
Celtic manager Gordon Strachan said Clyde deserved their shock 2-1 Scottish Cup win at Broadwood.

“I wish Clyde all the best, they played with great spirit and deserved their victory,” said Strachan.

“Clyde were the best team, they used the conditions well, played with common sense football and we did not.

“We laid the tactics down before the game but they weren’t adhered to. The players let themselves down and have to live with that.”

Craig Bryson and Eddie Malone scored for Clyde in the first half, while Maciej Zurawski scored late on for Celtic but the Bhoys could not find an equaliser.

“It is very hard to take everything in just now,” added Strachan.

“The manner in which we got beat was disappointing. We think we have answers but we have to look into it even more.

“The start of the game was disappointing – whatever tactics you use if you have no crosses, no shots or don’t even pressurise the goalkeeper to take some backpasses then you will struggle.

Simon Ferry has lifted the lid on Roy Keane ‘s debut against Clyde as Celtic suffered one of the biggest Scottish Cup shocks.

The Parkhead side were knocked out of the competition in 2006 as League One side beat Gordon Strachan ‘s men 2-1 at Broadwood.

It will always be remembered as the former Manchester United star’s first game in a Hoops shirt.

Celtic have been drawn against Danny Lennon’s side in the fifth round of the competition 14 years on.

And with a rematch on the cards former academy graduate Ferry, who was in the squad that day, reflected on the historic upset on the latest episode of Open Goal’s Keeping the Ball on the Ground with Kevin Kyle and Paul Slane.

Ferry admitted Keane didn’t say a word in the build up to the game as he gave Paul Telfer a ‘death stare’ for forgetting his shin pads.

He said: “I was in awe, I just stared at him the full time. He didn’t say a word. I was staring at him and he never said a word.

“I was expecting him to be pure, ‘come one’. But no.

“He just sat with a smile on his face. See when we got in from the warm up he just sat smiling. He must have thought, ‘what the f*** am I doing here?’ Because there was only one stand I think, the rest of it you could see the car park!

“Paul Telfer forgot his shin-guards in the tunnel and I remember him saying, ‘Oh no, I forgot my shin-guards’, and Keane gave him the absolute death stare.”

Keane wasn’t at his best on the day but Ferry says Chinese defender Du Wei was exceptionally poor and his Celtic career never recovered after his performance.

The 32-year-old also revealed there was a dressing room summit back at Parkhead immediately after the surprise result.

He added: “Big Du Wei man. He played in that game. He could play in training but defensively when boys got up against him (he struggled). Do you remember big Alex Williams? He flung him about man.

“It was silence (after the game). And then we got back to Celtic Park and the fans were waiting and going mental.

“Strachan said there was a meeting and told everyone to get in the first team dressing room.

“So Strachan was away for about an hour and we were all waiting. Keane says to Neil Lennon, ‘Lenny, go and see what’s happening.’

“Lenny went through and got Strachan and then they had a big free for all.

“Keane never said a word. I kept thinking, ‘I’m going to see Roy Keane crack here.’

“The game just passed him by, it was 100 miles per hour. (Craig) Bryson was just bombing it. Clyde were good that day. Du Wei was never seen again.”
“On the other hand Clyde used the conditions well. They got crosses in, fired shots in and our keeper had to deal with backpasses.”

And Strachan did not want to talk about the debut of Roy Keane.

“He did fine,” said the Celtic boss. “But it is hard to talk about Roy Keane because we have to look at a bigger picture than that.

“There were bad decision on the pitch and problems before the game.”
