Review

De Vries made two smart saves in the opening minutes to stop a Lee Naylor shot and a header from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. The Dutch striker then headed just over the bar under pressure from Shields.

In the 18th minute, Celtic midfielder Thomas Gravesen, making his home debut, forced another save from De Vries with a low 25-yard drive as the onslaught continued.

Maloney fired a free-kick a yard over the bar before Celtic went ahead on the half-hour mark.

Nakamura's corner was met at the near post by McManus and the defender bulleted his header past the helpless De Vries.

As Celtic pressed for a second goal before the break, Gravesen rattled the post with a 30-yard drive which had De Vries beaten all ends up.

The game was strangely subdued after the interval, with Celtic failing to build on their earlier good work.

Kenny Miller, still without goal for Celtic since signing from Wolverhampton in the summer, curled a shot from the edge of the box which went high and wide.

Neil Lennon almost grabbed a rare goal in the closing minutes but the Celtic captain's header landed on the roof of the net.

Strachan happy to pick up points

BBC
Celtic manager Gordon Strachan was satisfied with the win over Dunfermline after the club's European exertions.

"I was pleased with the first-half, which was fantastic considering all the excitement of Wednesday night," Strachan told BBC Radio Scotland.

"We could have had a comfortable lead at the break.

"In the second-half we were a bit one dimensional and the crowd got edgey – which is understandable. But I'm just happy to get the three points."
