Review

Easily horsed in this game in a match in which we simply got beaten by a team who were better prepared and went from the word go. We on the other hand made life difficult for ourselves and it was a disgrace at times, but we could have stolen a goal but we didn’t. Losing two goals in the first ten minutes simply didn’t help.

AC Milan next at home.

Celtic fail to win on the road again.

Group D: Shakhtar Donetsk 2, Celtic 0 Celtic suffered another dispiriting away defeat in the Champions League in their first game of this year’s campaign against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Olympiyskiy Stadium last night.

They were 2-0 down after just eight minutes in a disastrous start to the match – Brandao’s drive from the edge of the box in the fifth minute followed three minutes later by a Cristiano Lucarelli header.

Celtic are still looking for their first away win in the group stages of the tournament after 13 attempts and will now be concentrating on the visit of AC Milan in their next Group D match.

Although Celtic lost to Manchester United in their first group game last season and still qualified for the last 16, on this evidence the Scottish champions will have a more difficult task emulating that feat this time round.

In a one-sided first half Celtic could not have complained if they had been five down at the interval.

Shakhtar had beaten Celtic 3-0 at the same stage of the tournament three seasons ago and they made in-roads into beating that score right from the kick-off.

Celtic skipper Stephen McManus took an uncharacteristic and needless risk at the edge of his own penalty area, giving Fernandinho the chance to put Brandao through on goal and his fellow Brazilian quickly dispatched the ball past Artur Boruc.

Three minutes later, with Celtic in disarray, defender Razvan Rat’s deep cross from the left found the head of Lucarelli who guided the ball past the flailing Boruc from 12 yards out.

Another Rat cross from the left found Lucarelli, but this time Boruc saved the Italian’s weak effort before Brandao had the ball in the net again, only to be ruled offside, although television pictures suggested the decision was wrong.

Shakhtar’s big-money stars were turning on the style and there appeared to be no respite on the horizon for the bedraggled Hoops.

Celtic’s first effort on goal came in the 28th minute, McDonald’s drive from the edge of the box being deflected for a corner.

Donetsk defended the set-piece easily enough but moments later Vennegoor of Hesselink should have scored from Shunsuke Nakamura’s driven free-kick, the Dutchman heading high over from close range when a goal looked more likely.

The visitors welcomed the half-time whistle and after the restart they went looking to reduce the deficit.

However, Shakhtar soon had them on the back foot again but without the immediate results of the opening half, Srna hitting the side net with an angled-drive with his first poor piece of play in the game.

In the 53rd minute Brandao missed a sitter after Mariusz Lewandoswki had sent in a cross straight on to the Brazilian’s head.

Castillo then worked some space at the edge of the Celtic box twice in a couple of minutes, but again fired over on both occasions.

By then the points were safe and Celtic now turn their attention to the visit of the Italians as their next hope of getting off the mark.

Shakhtar Donetsk put Celtic to the sword with two early goals as the Glasgow side’s Champions League away hoodoo struck again.

Strikes inside five and eight minutes from a cool Evaeverson Brandao finish and a Christiano Lucarelli header sealed it for the Ukrainians.

Celtic rode out the rest of the storm but could not find a reply.

The SPL champions were better in the second-half but Shakhtar always looked the more likely to add to their lead.

News conference: Celtic manager Gordon Strachan

Celtic made one change from the side that started the weekend win over Inverness CT as Paul Hartley came in for Aiden McGeady.

Shakhtar – who splashed out £40m boosting their squad in the summer – included Italian international Lucarelli up front in a strong looking side in the compact but noisy Olimpiyskyi Stadium.

The SPL champions were under the cosh from the start and went a goal down after only five minutes as Scott Brown and Stephen McManus squandered possession deep inside their own half.

Brazilian striker Brandao was played in by Luis Fernandinho before unleashing a delightful shot beyond Artur Boruc from the edge of the box.

The Ukrainian league leaders turned the screw further almost immediately as they doubled their lead.

Razvan Rat whipped the ball in from the left flank and it was met by Lucarelli who stooped low to power a superb header passed the helpless Boruc from 12 yards.

Celtic – clearly shell-shocked – could not find a foothold in the game and Brown was booked for dissent following a foul by home skipper Darijo Srna.

Shakhtar had the ball in the net again in 19 minutes as Brandao rolled it into the empty goal but the offside flag went up despite it looking on.

It took 30 minutes for Celtic to threaten as a Shunsuke Nakamura free-kick on the right was headed over by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink although the ball fell awkwardly for the Dutchman.

Scott McDonald then drew a good save from Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov as he burst into the box to accept a through-ball, but he couldn’t beat the Ukrainian at his near-post.

As half-time approached, the home side almost made it three as Boruc superbly parried a vicious Brandao volley to safety.

Celtic began the second-half in more positive fashion as they tried to haul themselves back into the match although chasing the game meant the Parkhead side could be picked off at the other end.

Vennegoor of Hesselink went just wide with a header from a similar area to the one Lucarelli scored after good work on the left.

But it was the Ukrainians who looked the more menacing every time they came forward.

Brandao missed a glaring opportunity from six yards as he sent his header well wide of the target after a superb lofted ball to the back-post.

Boruc was forced into another save from a Fernandinho shot, diving low to his right as Gary Caldwell nicked it away from the on-rushing Brandao as Shakhtar looked for a third.

Substitute Chris Killen then forced a save from Pyatov after good work from fellow sub McGeady.

Ultimately though, it was the first eight brutal minutes which cost Celtic as Shakhtar eased to the three points.

It means Celtic are now 13 matches without a win away from home since the inception of the Champions League.
