Outfought, outplayed and uncompetitive, yet we still managed to overcome a strong First Division team and steal a victory we really shouldn't have got. embarrassing stuff with really Jekyll and Hyde stuff from Boruc.

Dundee 1-2 Celtic

By Clive Lindsay

BBC

Celtic survived a difficult test at Dundee's Dens Park to progress to the quarter-finals of the CIS Cup.

Efforts from Dundee's Gavin Swankie and Jan Zemlik struck the woodwork before the First Division side fell behind to a 20th-minute Scott McDonald header.

Dundee goalkeeper Craig Samson saved a Derek Riordan penalty kick, but McDonald set up Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to slot in after 60 minutes.

Kevin McDonald pounced to steer Dundee back into the game 11 minutes later.

Interview: Celtic manager Gordon Strachan

Celtic had fielded a strong side as manager Gordon Strachan aimed to avoid a third defeat in a row.

John Kennedy, Evander Sno and Riordan came in for the injured Jean-Joel Perrier-Doumbe, Paul Hartley and Aiden McGeadie.

And Riordan almost made an early impact as the Scottish champions dominated possession.

But goalkeeper Craig Samson managed to block the shot from 10 yards.

Paul McHale and Zemlik had come in for Derek Lyle and Bob Davidson as Dundee boss Alex Rae reverted to one up front.

But the First Division outfit were dangerous at set-pieces and came close to breaking the deadlock after 20 minutes.

Swankie's curling, 22-yard free-kick had goalkeeper Artur Boruc beaten but struck the outside of the post.

Moments later, Zemlik beat Boruc to Freddie Daquin's corner kick and the Czech striker's header struck the crossbar before being cleared by a panicky Celtic defence.

Dundee immediately suffered a blow when right-back David Worrell came off injured, being replaced with the experienced Danny Griffin.

The new man appeared to be the one posted missing when McDonald rose unmarked to head a Riordan free-kick in off the post from 12 yards.

Boruc, to blame for two goals conceded to Hibernian at the weekend, had made an uncertain start but redeemed himself with a fine save from a strong Gary MacKenzie header from 10 yards.

The Polish goalkeeper then did well to turn another Swankie free-kick over the crossbar as Dundee responded to going behind by taking control of the game.

Dundee did concede a penalty seven minutes after the break, when Griffin clipped Riordan.

But Samson managed to smother the Scotland striker's casually-taken spot kick.

Celtic had Boruc to thank again when he turned over a blockbuster of a free-kick from Swankie that flew through the defensive wall.

And, just as Dundee appeared to have Celtic on the back foot once more, McDonald cut the ball back for Vennegoor of Hesselink to turn it home from 12 yards.

Boruc completed a Jekyll and Hyde game with a poor punch that allowed Dundee's McDonald to slot home a reply.

But the home side pressed for an equaliser that never came and Zemlik was sent off in the last minute for persistent fouling.
