Review

Can't complain. First home game of the season and we easily sweep aside a determined St Johnstone side. Don't let the scoreline fool you, St Johnstone had their moments and weren't all bad, just Celtic were on the rebound after the defeat against Arsenal a few days earlier and the team line-up saw a return of the 4-4-2 formation with some players having something to prove.

Maloney was clearly the hero for the day scoring a double and setting up another, whilst Fortune got the monkey off his back to grab two goals after a shakey start to his career at Celtic. Some great goals, and Skippy capped off the scoring with a wonderful header from a good cross from the increasingly better Fox.

Caldwell in defence continuing to have a bad month. After the headaches against Arsenal and for Scotland, he can now add this match. In fairness he wasn't fully at fault for the second goal, as a St Johnstone player rounded and scored round three players but Caldwell should have at least stopped it. As for the first goal that was lost it came from a poor header back to the goalie which allowed a free run for a St Johnstone player to ease through and score (a very good goal it was too).

Anyhow, a very entertaining game and hopefully sets the standard for the rest of the season. A great sized crowd to watch the game will easily feel they got their money's worth and fans will be flocking back after this one.

SPL: CELTIC manager Tony Mowbray will take no notice of the convincing home win over St Johnstone on Saturday when he writes out the team ahead of the Champions League play-off clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.
Celtic trail 2-0 from the first leg in Glasgow and few give them a chance in London, but they warmed up with a 5-2 win over the Premier League new boys at Celtic Park.
Marc-Antoine Fortune and Scott McDonald were reinstated to the side after being dropped for the visit of Arsenal and both found the net, with the former Nancy striker scoring his first two goals since his move from the French club in the summer.
Shaun Maloney also grabbed a double, with Collin Samuel and Jody Morris scoring consolations for the visitors.
Mowbray then turned his attention to Arsenal, revealing that his starting 11 is already picked.
“When the Arsenal tie came out, my idea of how the team might play was settled pretty quickly,” Mowbray said.
“The result of the first leg alters your thought patterns of how you might set up in the second leg. If we had been sitting here 2-0 up, then I would probably play a different team to one that is 2-0 down and having to score some goals. But I am pretty clear in my mind what my team will be next Wednesday.
“I understand that if we lose 2-0 again, I will be judged to have got the team wrong again but if we win 3-0 then hopefully everyone will be pretty happy.”
Mowbray will be without Cameroon international Landry N’Guemo through suspension, but the Celtic manager claimed that was not the only reason he was left out of the St Johnstone game.
“It was partly that,” Mowbray said.
“But he has two international games coming up halfway round the world and if you have the opportunity to look after your players, you take it.”
Meanwhile, Kris Boyd snatched a dramatic last-gasp 2-1 victory for 10-man Rangers yesterday within seconds of coming on the park as the Scottish champions staged an incredible comeback against Hearts. Boyd’s injury-time penalty secured victory in an explosive encounter at Tynecastle after Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson was sent off for a lunge on Ian Black.

Celtic manager Tony Mowbray:
"We left Landy N'Guemo in the stand as he has played a lot of football and has a couple of international games coming up.

"If we have a chance to rest our international players, as we did today, we will do that.
"We are trying to beat ourselves with the goals we are conceding, but there was plenty good happening going forward.
"Marc-Antoine Fortune was desperate to score, but I know from last year at West Brom how good a footballer he is and what else he brings to the team."

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes:
"Losing five goals is a sore one to take, but we will take positives from it.

"There was a gulf there in terms of keeping the ball and creating chances, but we still had two or three chances before Celtic scored.
"I am disappointed at the manner of some of the goals, but I think Celtic will score four or give goals against a few teams this season. "And I think Collin Samuel can be very pleased with his performance."
