Trivia

  • Celtic stay 5pts in front, Rangers win 4-0 at Hamilton. They have 4 games in hand!
  • Hooper back after injury.
  • Crazy week again with George Peat (SFA President) criticising Celtic for making issues of refereeing displays, we make a fair retort.
  • Hooper scores a wonder strike of a goal!

Review

Not a great game, not a great performance, but better than Hibs and fully deserved.
If Stokes had got a hattrick I was thinking it would have probably been the worst performance by a player and still scored a hattrick.
Great second goal, but thought he didn't play very well.
Kayal was absolutely superb, and was the MOTM by a mile.
Started us playing ok with two balls through in the first half, one of which led to the goal.
Our passing was very wayward, and we better get better at that.
Referee was a bit too quick with the yellow cards, and I think that was why he didn't send off that Hibs lad De Graf for persistant fouling.
Great save from Forster as well.
Think Izzy is the best left back we have had in a long while, and just seems to get better at both defending and going forward.
Don't think we are going to see the best of Freddie until he plays on a big pitch with a decent surface, so most likely at home.
Great finish from Hooper for the first, very composed.

Celtic's Anthony Stokes sees off Hibernian as officials stay in shadeHibernian 0 Celtic 3

  • Celtic's Gary Hooper puts his team 1-0 up in the SPL game against Hibernian at Easter Road. Photograph: Stu Forster/Getty Images Given the identity of some of the main protagonists here, the odds were heavily stacked against a quiet 90 minutes.
On Celtic's previous visit to Scotland's capital, the referee, Craig Thomson, sent Neil Lennon to the stand during a 2-0 defeat by Hearts. Excessive misconduct by the Celtic manager on that occasion led to a six-game touchline ban being handed down to him by the Scottish Football Association on Tuesday.
Thomson took charge of this encounter too. The fourth official was Willie Collum, the referee who handled another controversy-filled game involving Celtic, the 1-1 draw away to Hamilton on Wednesday night.
Thankfully for those who prefer the purer side of football, an upset occurred at Easter Road; for it was Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes, rather than any of the officials, who played pivotal roles. Celtic cantered to victory and, although Stokes's first goal came from a penalty kick, there was no doubting the merit of its being awarded by Thomson.
Hibernian's predicament shows little sign of abating. For the first time in 13 years – and they were demoted on that occasion – they are involved in a relegation battle. With trips to Fir Park and Tannadice, plus a home meeting with Rangers, making up Hibs' next three league fixtures, their next win is difficult to foresee.
The opening stages of this match were littered with misplaced passes and miscontrolled touches, which can be explained, at least in part, by the state of the playing surface.
The most animated the visiting support became was on account of a 25th-minute booking for the Celtic midfielder Beram Kayal. He was late with a lunge on Ian Murray and fully deserved a yellow card, yet that still prompted apparent outrage in one stand. Such pantomime has long since become normality. To be fair, fans had little else to shout about given the chronic nature of the football. The sight of the Hibs goalkeeper Mark Brown punting the ball straight to his opposite number, Fraser Forster, 35 minutes in perfectly summed things up.
Lennon had restored Hooper to the Celtic attack, partly on account of Stokes's woeful showing as a lone striker in midweek. Hooper has made a rapid recovery from ankle ligament damage, but was still one of only two forwards available to his manager.
Hibs had not won in seven matches before this one, a scoreless draw against Second Division Ayr United last weekend merely the latest indicator of Colin Calderwood's struggles. Celtic's arrival wasn't enough to tempt even a reasonable number of Hibs supporters out on a dismal Saturday afternoon.
Those who did turn out were disappointed within minutes either side of the interval. Daniel Majstorovic had passed up a glorious chance to send Celtic in front by the time Hooper supplied the latest example of his value. Stokes was the architect with a perfect cross, but there was still work to be done, Hooper beautifully turning past defender Paul Hanlon before slotting beyond Brown.
Stokes won the spot-kick that allowed Celtic to tie up victory with 40 minutes still to play, the Irishman drawing a foul from Lewis Stevenson and dispatching the penalty himself.
More craft was involved in Stokes's second, the former Sunderland player expertly hooking a shot over Brown after Hibs failed to clear a routine corner. Not even a referee could dampen Lennon's mood during this sojourn to Edinburgh.

Hibernian 0-3 Celtic

BBC

By Clive Lindsay
Anthony Stokes scored twice as Celtic eased to a victory over Hibernian that lifted the Glasgow side eight points clear at the top of the table.
David Wotherspoon's diving header flew just wide as Hibs started well.
But Celtic burst in to life and, after Daniel Majstorovic inexplicably headed wide, Gary Hooper side-footed in the opener moments later after 44 minutes.
Stokes was fouled by Lewis Stevenson and scored from the spot before adding another with a sublime overhead kick.

While Celtic stretched their lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League – at least until Rangers faced Hamilton later in the afternoon – the pressure mounted on Hibs manager Colin Calderwood after their seventh game without a victory.
Hooper had made an earlier-than-anticipated return from injury to start up front for Celtic, with captain Scott Brown also starting in midfield along with suspension-free James Forrest.
Hibs went into the game bereft of confidence and minus two influential players – Jonathan Grounds having returned to Middlesbrough and Liam Miller being suspended.
Darryl Duffy dropped to the bench as boss Calderwood reverted to a single-striker formation with Derek Riordan the focus of attacks against his former club.
However, it was midfielder Wotherspoon, returning to the side along with Stevenson and Edwin de Graaf, who was first to threaten inside the Celtic penalty box.
Stevenson whipped in a cross to the front post, but Wotherspoon was unable to direct his diving header on target from a difficult angle.
Hibs settled first, but their early invention soon deserted them as Celtic's greater physical strength began to tell.
The visitors found it difficult to penetrate a determined Hibs defence for much of the first half and a couple of brave saves from former Celtic goalkeeper Mark Brown averted the danger after a couple of threatening balls into the penalty box.
Celtic finally created a clear-cut chance after 40 minutes when a curling Mark Wilson free-kick found Majstorovic unmarked eight yards out, but the Swede somehow managed to head wide of target.
The visitors took heart from that and Biram Kayal's pin-point pass put Hooper clear, but Brown's outstretched foot thwarted the striker's low shot.
Hibs failed to heed that warning and Hooper made no mistake seconds later when he flicked a low cross from Stokes past his marker before side-footing into the far corner past the goalkeeper.
Celtic built on that quickly following the break after Stevenson's clumsy challenge on Stokes led to a penalty and a yellow card for the full-back after 50 minutes.
Brown would have probably saved the spot-kick had he stood still, but the goalkeeper's dive to his right allowed the ball to nestle in the centre of the net.
Danny Galbraith had the ball in the net after 55 minutes, but the Hibs forward was clearly offside before gathering Merouane Zemmama's through ball and slipping it through the legs of goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
Hibs threatened again when a dangerous Riordan ball into the six-yard box failed to find a home boot, but Celtic responded when Paddy McCourt forced a fine save from Brown, before they ended any fears of a comeback by the Edinburgh side.
There appeared little danger when Stokes gathered a corner with his back to goal 16 yards out after 65 minutes, but the former Hibs striker's superbly controlled overhead kick found the far corner of the net.
The Republic of Ireland international failed to complete his hat-trick when he beat the offside trap and chipped Brown, only for defender Francis Dickoh to head clear off the goal-line.
Hibs went closest to a consolation when substitute Duffy's neat front-post flick from a Riordan cross was turned onto the crossbar by goalkeeper Forster.
