2012-04-15: Celtic 1-2 Heart of Midlothian, Scottish Cup

Match Pictures | Matches: 20112012 | 2011-2012 Pictures

Trivia

  • Scottish Cup semi final.
  • Celtic out of the Scottish Cup, so only weeks back talk of a treble has turned into the league alone (which we sealed last week).
  • Winning penalty scored by ex Celtic player Craig Beattie.
  • Black armbands for 15th anniversary of Hillsborough disaster.
  • Neil Lennon approached the referee at the end in an aggressive manner, claims disputed penalty calls were "personal". Doesn't help things. We should have got a contentious penalty which was just after we had conceded a contentious penalty.

Review

Tactically inept, it's got to be said. Why Wanyama never started I'll never know. Too many lazy, ridiculously average players who want to pass side to side then launch a 80 yard ball to nobody. No creativity in midfield. In fact, no midfield at all today. Pish, cowardly weak defenders that need punted immediately. Ki missing two headers from a yard out is just a joke. I'm one of his biggest fans but that is just unacceptable. Total joke. Qualifying for the Champions League? Good luck with that.

Cheating hun referee. Nothing new there. Feckin scandalous decision to award a penalty for that. Totally expected though. That's the way it goes in this country.

Hope fat Craig Beattie pulls his hamstring before the final.

McGeouch should start from here on. Prefer him to Samaras or Commons. One of them has a joke of a first touch and the other one weighs about 20 stone and just waddles around the pitch.

I know people will think I'm being knee-jerk but not really. I've been so unhappy with some of our players and style of play for ages now and it's been abundantly clear for a while now that while getting results, Lenny's tactics are very questionable.

(MMHughes of KDS forum)
Yes, we were cheated again. The standard of refereeing in this country is a joke and it always has been. Jock Stein always used to say if Celtic are going to win anything in Scotland being better isn't enough: you have to be much better than the rest. Unfortunately, that still stands today. Euan Norris is always going to favour the other team if he gets a chance.

Therefore, we need to look at ourselves to make sure we are MUCH better than the rest. A few observations:

* Kelvin Wilson is no where near good enough to play for Celtic ( I fear he may be one that will get Lenny the sack if he stays long term.)

* Loovens still isn't good enough (we knew that 5 years ago so why is he still here

* Lennon appears very one dimensional as manager ( he sticks to 4-4-2 no religiously and this rigidness does us no favours at all.

* Stokes/Hooper have gone totally off the boil for the last few month (motivation or something else)

* We continue to play high balls up to small strikers- it would help if we had someone over 6 foot in the team.

* Total lack of width today (when Forrest is out we seem to really struggle in this regard).

* We seem to want to play at 2 miles an hour, very slow laboured passing- we need to play with a much higher tempo especially if teams are going to sit in on you.

In the meantime, Celtic 'spokespersons' should continue to highlight the deficiencies in refereeing and ask foreign refs back, Don't let Lenny continue to be the one to speak out cause they will just hammer him.

Celtic 1 Hearts 2: match report

Telegraph

By Andrew Lomax

4:23PM BST 15 Apr 2012

Hearts will play Hibernian in the final of the Scottish Cup for the first time since 1896 after substitute Craig Beattie's last-minute penalty earned a surprise win over his former side Celtic at Hampden on Sunday.

One of the most remarkable afternoons in the history of the competition began in earnest a minute after the break when Rudi Skacel raced on to a pass from Beattie, who had replaced Scott Robinson at the interval, to fire Hearts into the lead.

Four minutes from time Celtic striker Gary Hooper headed in a Charlie Mulgrew cross and it looked like the game was heading towards extra-time.

However, with seconds of normal time remaining referee Euan Norris pointed to the spot when a shot from Tynecastle skipper Marius Zaliukas hit the arm of Hoops midfielder Joe Ledley and Beattie scored from the spot to send the travelling Jambos fans into ecstasy.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon was clearly unhappy at the penalty decision but will perhaps be more annoyed that his Clydesdale Bank Premier League champions will miss out on the chance of a double.

Edinburgh football fans, though, will look forward to a day out in Glasgow on May 19.

Lennon made one change to his side, bringing in Sweden right-back Mikael Lustig for Adam Matthews, who had a mouth infection.

The Tynecastle side showed two changes, defender Andy Webster and striker Stephen Elliott in for the injured Jamie Hamill and Gary Glen, who dropped out altogether.

The Tynecastle side had a great chance after just 30 seconds when Celtic defender Kelvin Wilson underhit a back-pass which let Elliott in, but his shot from a tight angle was blocked by Hoops goalkeeper Fraser Forster for a corner.

Hearts had six players in their starting line-up who were one booking away from missing the final but showed no signs of holding back and there were some hefty challenges in the early stages.

There was another moment of slackness from the Celtic defence in the ninth minute when defender Mulgrew was robbed by Jambos midfielder Ian Black, who raced into the box but his pass failed to find Elliott.

Lustig headed a Kris Commons free-kick over the bar from six yards out five minutes later, before a fine Mulgrew cross into the box evaded Georgios Samaras, but the game was taking its time to come to the boil.

In the 21st minute Black was lucky to escape with only a booking after a challenge on Celtic midfielder Joe Ledley, in an incident which saw Mulgrew also booked. Black was also penalised for a handball but Norris resisted the temptation to produce a second yellow card.

Hooper headed wide from a Mulgrew cross, and Webster caused panic when he was short with a return pass to Hearts goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald which allowed Commons in, but the Scotland midfielder's touch was too heavy as he was forced to go around MacDonald and the opportunity was lost.

The best chance of the first half came for the dominant Hoops in the final minute but Celtic midfielder Ki Sung-yueng hit the post with a header from Lustig's cross when it looked as if he must score.

Beattie replaced Robinson for the start of the second half and the move paid off after just a minute when the big striker helped Skacel fire Hearts ahead.

After taking a pass from Black 30 yards out, Beattie quickly released Skacel into the box and he rounded Forster before slamming the ball into the roof of the net.

Stunned Celtic immediately stepped up the tempo and moments later Ki fired over from the edge of the box with a drive which signalled a period of intense Hoops pressure.

However, Hearts were a threat on the counter. In the 54th minute Skacel fired in a drive from 30 yards which Forster was glad to push round the post for a corner, and moments later the Czech tried his luck from the edge of the box but this time his effort trundled wide.

Anthony Stokes replaced the ineffective Samaras on the hour mark as Lennon tried plan B but in another Hearts counter-attack Beattie fired wide from 20 yards.

Ki hit the post again with a header from Commons' free-kick in the 81st minute, before skipper Scott Brown made way for Dylan McGeouch.

MacDonald produced a fingertip save to stop Commons' free-kick going under the bar before making a great save from Mulgrew's header with the rebound coming off Stokes' thigh and away from danger.

But in the 86th minute Celtic eventually got through when Hooper headed in Mulgrew's cross from four yards out and extra-time looked likely.

However, Beattie became the Hearts hero with his spot-kick, although there was still time for Celtic to be denied a penalty when the ball appeared to come off the arm of Webster as Hearts defended for their lives.

Craig Beattie's stoppage-time penalty for Hearts knocked out holders Celtic to set up a first Edinburgh derby Scottish Cup final since 1896.

The former Celtic striker was handed the chance when Marius Zaliukas' shot came off Joe Ledley's hand.

Rudi Skacel had fired Hearts into the lead two minutes after the break.

Gary Hooper looked offside as he headed the equaliser with three minutes left, but Beattie's spot kick ended Celtic's hopes of a league and Cup double.

It sparked fury on the Celtic bench, with manager Neil Lennon confronting referee Euan Norris about a penalty that itself looked harsh, as Hearts celebrated reaching the final against Hibernian on 19 May.

Both sides had gone into the game seeking their third straight win, but Lennon was forced to rule out Adam Matthews with a mouth infection, meaning a rare start for Sweden right-back Mikael Lustig.

Stephen Elliott was given the nod up front for Hearts – with Beattie only regarded fit enough for the bench and Gary Glen dropping out the squad completely – and was given given an early chance to prove his sharpness.

He intercepted a poor back pass from Kelvin Wilson but had his shot blocked by goalkeeper Fraser Forster at point-blank range.

Celtic started to pick their passes and a Kris Commons free-kick found Lustig, who ought to have done better than head over from eight yards at the back post, while Ian Black was fortunate to pick up only a yellow card with a high and late challenge on Ledley.

Hooper, who appeared to be given a deeper role than normal, glanced a header across the face of goal following a fine curling Charlie Mulgrew cross as Celtic started to take control.

Commons was handed a great chance to score when Webster was short with a back-pass, but the Scotland winger miscontrolled his attempt to round goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald.

Somehow the Edinburgh side survived unscathed until the break after a pinpoint cross from Georgios Samaras found the diving head of Ki Sung-Yeung, but the ball rebounded off the inside of the post and clear.

Hearts manager Paulo Sergio made a change at the break, with Scott Robinson being replaced with Beattie, who made an impact within 70 seconds.

The former West Brom and Swansea striker's pass deflecting off Wilson into the path of Skacel, who rounded Forster and fired into the roof of the net.

Ki went close to an equaliser with a blistering drive from 16 yards that just evaded the crossbar.

Skacel forced a full-stretch diving save from Forster with a powerful effort from 20 yards and fired another just wide.

Celtic were looking more dangerous with Anthony Stokes on for Samaras and the substitute's low drive tested MacDonald.

Ki had another great chance with a header but found the outside of the post from five yards after being found unmarked by Commons, whose next free-kick was clawed away by MacDonald.

The goalkeeper saved superbly again following a Mulgrew header and Stokes could only aim the rebound across the face of goal from two yards.

However, the pressure finally told when Mulgrew's cross found Hooper, who headed home from 10 yards when the striker had a yard start behind the defence.

It was Celtic's turn to feel aggrieved moments later when Zaliukas' shot deflected off the arm of Ledley, then Victor Wanyama and Beattie drove the penalty down the centre and into the net.

Ledley almost made amends with a back-post volley that MacDonald managed to hold and send Hearts into the final despite Celtic's late claim that of a hand ball against Webster.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon claims referee decisions were personal

BBC
Neil Lennon has suggested that decisions he believes went against his Celtic side in their Scottish Cup semi-final were "personal".

The angry Celtic manager had earlier raced on to the Hampden pitch to have words with referee Euan Norris after the 2-1 defeat by Hearts.

Lennon sent first-team coach Alan Thompson to talk to the media.

But he later said on Twitter: "Feel so sorry for players and fans… I think it's personal myself."

Celtic felt aggrieved after Hearts were awarded a stoppage-time penalty, which was dispatched by the Glasgow side's former striker, Craig Beattie.

A Marius Zaliukas drive struck the arm of Joe Ledley before also appearing to brush the hand of Victor Wanyama.

"Referee told players he thought Wanyama handled," said Lennon, who already has three disciplinary cases pending with the Scottish Football Association, in his Tweet.

Ledley himself entered the online debate.

"Can't believe the decisions made on the pitch today. Was never a pen," said the midfielder.

"This sums it up, he thought it hit Victor's arm."

Ledley also posted a photograph of a tackle on himself by Ian Black, suggesting that the Hearts midfielder ought to have been sent off rather than being shown a yellow card.

Following Beattie's goal, Celtic claimed for a penalty when the ball struck the body of Hearts defender Andy Webster – and also when Ki Sung-Yeung was challenged by Ryan McGowan.

Thomson said: "If the referee sees theirs as a penalty then he has to see ours as a penalty.

"There's no justice in his decision-making."

Celtic had fought back to cancel out Rudi Skacel's opener through Gary Hooper with three minutes remaining, but the stoppage-time penalty ended their hopes of completing a league and Cup double.

Interview – Celtic coach Alan Thompson

"Decisions have cost us again," said Thomson.

"He's gave one that might have been might not have been and he hasn't given one that might have been, might not have been.

"So where's the consistency there?"

Thompson praised his own side's performance.

"I thought it was a good semi-final," he said. "The first half didn't open up because they sat in and got 11 men behind the ball and made it difficult.

"We had lots of possession without creating too much and then the second half opened up a bit and it was a good game of football.

"They frustrated us, but we are delighted with the way we played.

"The lads were excellent. I'm so disappointed for them after the efforts they've put in.

"Hearts have had a couple of long-range shots from outside the box, so they haven't really hurt us.

"But we've missed chance after chance – Ki's hit the psot twice with headers."

Striker Hooper appeared to adopt a deeper role with Kris Commons moving forward from midfield.

However, Thompson insisted: "It was the same shape as last week, with a four-man midfield and Hooper and Samaras up front."

The first-team coach said defeat had effectively ended Celtic's season on a low note.

"We've just lost a semi-final and the chance to finish the season with a cup final to look forward to," he added.

"That's the season done and dusted now.

"We've got five league games to go. We've already won the championship, so it's disappointing.

"We'll have to get over this one – it will be a sore one – and then we'll try to have a good summer and build towards the Champions League qualifiers."
