Review

(Declan Brendan Timmy Bhoy)
Excellent 3 points, escpecially coming off the back of midweek win away in Europe.

We noticeably tired in the second half but I still never felt we were ever in real danger of losing a goal, until Ambrose`s slack pass in injury time. That aside I thought it was another confident and assured performance from both our Centre halves. Wilson had a very good game and I don`t blame him at all for the chance Hearts should have scored from. That was as clear a free kick as you`ll ever see. To subsuquently book Wilson was really rubbing it in.

Commons again showed that bawsack Scotland manager what he`s missing with another good game, especially first half, another one to tire late on but even then he was producing wee moments of magic that could easily have gotten us a goal.

Aside from the obvious 3 points, the good points for me were our two centre backs, they look to be developing a good partnership, Izaguirre had another good game and looks to be on his way back. The aforementioned Commons. Also Kayal coming off the bench, played really well when he came on and that can only be a good thing for us.

Celtic 1 Hearts 0: Lennon says Mulgrew will be fit for Scotland

Herald

Celtic manager Neil Lennon expects Charlie Mulgrew to be fit for Scotland duty, despite being forced off with a head knock during his side's 1-0 win over Hearts.
Mulgrew and Hearts goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald, who was stretchered off wearing a neck brace, both recovered well from the early collision.

Celtic were without captain Scott Brown as Georgios Samaras struck the only goal as the home side displaced Hibernian from the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League, but the midfielder will also join up with Craig Levein's squad tomorrow ahead of the World Cup double header against Wales and Belgium.

On Mulgrew, who played on for 20 minutes, Lennon said: "He was a bit groggy, a wee bit fuzzy. He wanted to carry on, but I think he was progressively feeling a bit more nauseous, but he has been checked out and he is fine.

"We'll have to check if there is concussion or a bit of grogginess. There is no reason why he can't go with Scotland and come under their medical department and let them look after him."

Brown sat out the game after feeling the effects of his ongoing hip complaint following Celtic's 3-2 victory over Spartak Moscow in Russia.

"Scott will join up," Lennon said. "Craig is well aware of the situation with Scott. We don't know if he will be able to play the two games, but they will have to gauge that themselves."

When asked if he would be unhappy if Brown did play both games, Lennon said: "I don't want to put pressure on anybody but no, I wouldn't because what surprised me after the Benfica game, he was fit to play in the Dundee game at the weekend.

"There are days and games where he recovers quicker than others. There is a little bit of inconsistency with this sort of condition that he has.

"But he couldn't play today, he was too sore and he made that decision himself on Thursday and Friday.

"It will probably all depend, if he is selected for the first game, how he feels after that."

Hearts manager John McGlynn allayed fears over MacDonald, who appeared to fall unconscious after punching away a cross from a crowd of bodies.

McGlynn said: "At half-time he was sitting up no problem. The doctor said he took 20 minutes to come round, but he checked him again and checked his eyes and he was okay.

"I'm sure he'll be observed for the rest of the night, but he is fine."

Samaras struck the 34th-minute winner through the legs of Peter Enckelman as Celtic recovered from a flat start when they could have gone behind as Callum Paterson missed Andrew Driver's cut-back from 12 yards.

Kris Commons, again omitted from the Scotland squad, set up the goal and was at the heart of Celtic's best play.

Hearts pushed Celtic back after the break without creating chances and Celtic stepped up a gear after Beram Kayal came on with 20 minutes to go, although Driver shot just wide in the dying seconds.

Lennon was "delighted" to get through the game unscathed after their first Champions League away win on Tuesday.

He added: "The players have put in a massive effort this week and you could see that fatigue was starting to kick in a bit towards the end.

"Having to use a substitute early for Charlie wasn't the way we wanted things to go because we knew that later on in the game fatigue would set in.

"I can't speak highly enough of the players, it's a brilliant effort. I'm not saying we were at our best by any means but we created brilliant chances and could have put Hearts away a lot earlier than we did."

But McGlynn felt his team should have come away with a draw.

"We came here with Celtic flying and you understand they will have a bit more of the ball and opportunities, however I thought our guys acquitted themselves tremendously well," he said.

"We were more than a match for Celtic. We had a great opportunity to go ahead with Callum Paterson and it might have been a different ball game because not long after that Celtic scored and the game swung in their favour.

"But our guys didn't panic, I've seen situations where Celtic get a goal and run over the top of you. But that didn't happen, our boys passed their way back into the game and kept working really, really hard.

"We had a great opportunity right at the death to get a point and I think we maybe deserved that."

Georgios Samaras' first domestic goal of the season put Celtic back on top of the Scottish Premier League after an entertaining victory over Hearts.

The visitors had goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald stretchered off after a collision with Charlie Mulgrew.

Replacement Peter Enckelman was slow to react as Samaras' low drive put Celtic ahead after 34 minutes.

Both sides had chances to add to the scoreline, but it was the Glasgow side who were always in control.

And Celtic's fifth straight victory – they are now unbeaten in their last six outings – lifted them two points clear of Hibernian with a game in hand.

Mulgrew continued in Celtic's midfield, where James Forrest replaced the injured Scott Brown, after his fine display in the 3-2 Champions League win over Spartak Moscow and forced a fine early block from MacDonald.

The versatile Scotland international played a one-two with Gary Hooper, who had a quiet 100th appearance for the club, on the edge of the penalty area but fired his low drive against the outrushing goalkeeper.

MacDonald's participation was to end in the 14th minute after bravely punching clear under a Mulgrew challenge from an Emilio Izaguirre cross.

Forrest just failed to turn Kris Commons' first-time effort into the net at the back post as MacDonald and Mulgrew were left motionless on the pitch and the signal went out for former St Johnstone goalkeeper Peter Enckelman to prepare for his debut from the bench.

Hearts' first threat came from an unlikely source as Darren Barr, pushed up into midfield as Andy Webster replaced Scott Robinson in the starting line-up, fired powerfully but straight at new England squad goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

Andrew Driver robbed a casual Kelvin Wilson and, when the winger played the ball into the path of Callum Paterson, the young striker poked it wide as he slid in from 10 yards.

Celtic responded and unmarked Moscow match-winner Samaras sent a side-footed volley on to the outside of the post from eight yards following a Commons cross.

Mulgrew had obviously not recovered fully from his earlier head collision and was replaced with Joe Ledley after 32 minutes.

However, that did not knock Celtic out of their stride and they immediately went ahead when Commons played Samaras through and the striker's low drive powered under the hapless Enckelman.

The goalkeeper was nearly caught out again by a quickly-taken Commons free-kick that curled wide of the far post.

Hearts' Ryan Stevenson twice teased the Celtic uprights from long range then Mehdi Taouil forced Forster to turn a thundering 20-yard drive over the crossbar.

Man-of-the-match Commons and Samaras both went close either side of the half-time break as Celtic looked to kill the game.

Hearts lost Paterson, replaced with John Sutton, after 52 minutes following a hefty challenge from behind by Wilson that somehow went unpenalised by referee Craig Thomson.

Commons and Izaguirre took turns to lead Ryan McGowan a merry dance, but their efforts from tight angles failed to find the net.

Samaras sent a header just over, while Forrest and Commons both tested the nervous Enckelman, but Celtic's midweek exertions appeared to be catching up on them.

However, as Celtic ran out of steam, Hearts were out of ideas and were unable to make the most of their best opportunity when Driver fired wide in stoppage time.
