Trivia

  • UEFA Cup, Europa League,
  • Matchday 1 of the Group Stages
  • Match played on the pivotal day of the Scottish Independence referendum, voting day. Very close.
  • Wasako scores on his debut.
  • Green Brigade section 111 to finally be reopened. Cynics say it is timed to be after the referendum to stop them doing any political protests etc etc.

(Liverpoolbhoy of KDS)
Would have taken a draw before the game so happy with that.

Positives
Gordon was outstanding, that save from header in first half was world class.
Wakaso looked very composed good technique and what a goal.
Brown got 90 mins towards his fitness.

Wahay! bits
Scepovic, I think there is a player in there. Terrible service tonight but good awareness and made some good runs off the ball, his shot was a foot away from him being hailed as the answer to our prayers, the goalie was well beaten.

Negatives (buckle up…)
Commons can not play away from home in Europe, not disciplined enough for that position in the hole, no first touch, to slow to see the pass poor passing under pressure.
Ambrose at RB….just No.
Izzy's form is piss poor, very lacksidasical on the ball especially in and around our box FFS.

I've left the last negative for Mcgregor. I've held back on my opinion on here over this lad when at the start of the season I was convinced I was in the Emperor's new clothes scenario. I just couldn't see it with this lad, yeh sure he scored a Few goals in Europe but every kid is taught at an early age is get into the 6 yard box when attacking. I don't think he brings any value to that position, remember that's were James Forrest plays and I was his biggest critic over the last season or so but he is miles ahead of this lad. Watching him on Saturday against Aberdeen in second half when he was closest to North Stand it was painful to watch his positioning when we didn't have the ball, to far inside too far up the park, Ambrose was on a hiding to nothing.

If we can get Matthews or Lustig fit we will improve, in European away games have 3 in middle, Biton or Kayal push Brown on a little, Wakaso on one side and Forrest(when fit) or Tonev on other then we will have a much better balanced team.

Celtic opened their Europa League Group D campaign by drawing with Salzburg at the Red Bull Arena.

On-loan Rubin Kazan winger Mubarak Wakaso drilled home the opener in his first Celtic appearance.

Brazilian Alan levelled with the aid of a deflection as the visitors were caught short in defence.

Ramalho Silva diverted Scott Brown's volley in for Celtic's second but a superbly struck Jonathan Soriano free-kick levelled matters once again.

And, with Dinamo Zagreb beating Astra Giurgiu, Celtic and Salzburg trail the Croatian side by two points after the first round of matches.

Wakaso had waited several weeks to make an impact with the Scottish Premiership side after manager Ronny Deila was frustrated in his attempts to have the player signed before their Champions League play-off defeat by NK Maribor.

The Ghana international provided a taste of what was to come when he struck low past Peter Gulacsi's goal.

And with his next effort the 24-year-old arrowed the ball across the goalkeeper and into the corner from Kris Commons' pass.

Such an early set-back was the last thing Salzburg needed after three successive domestic defeats and there was little to encourage the home fans until Ramalho got on the end of a teasing Soriano free-kick.

The Brazilian peeled off to the back post and rose unchallenged to send his header goalwards, Gordon getting a vital touch to knock the ball wide.

Celtic's early season defensive struggles – no clean sheets in their previous six games – were apparent as Jason Denayer slipped at the vital moment for Salzburg's leveller.

Alan was allowed to run on to Kevin Kampl's pass and though Efe Ambrose got across from the right the defender succeeded only in redirecting the eventual shot past Gordon.

Salzburg's confidence grew and Marcel Sabitzer fired wide before Gordon was given more work to do in the second half.

Alan's strike was blocked and the Scotland international produced a double save to keep out Sabitzer's shot and Alan's rebound header.

However, the hosts had their own defensive vulnerabilities and Stefan Scepovic had tried to take advantage with an ambitious dipping shot from wide on the right that landed just past the near post.

And Salzburg were slow to close down Brown when he hit the 25-yard shot that Ramalho's outstretched boot would carry into the right-hand corner of the net.

Again Celtic's lead did not last, however. Emilio Izaguirre fouled Sabitzer around 30 yards out and Soriano curved the ball expertly over the wall and into the top corner.

Near-misses at either end permeated the closing stages but neither side looked convincing in attack as the clock ran down.

Scott Brown September 2014 Joy: Scott Brown scored to give Celtic a 2-1 lead but the side had to settle for a point.SNS Group

Celtic twice surrendered the lead to draw 2-2 with Salzburg in their thrilling Europa League Group D opener in Austria.

Mubarak Wakaso scored 14 minutes into his Hoops debut but Brazilian striker Alan levelled 10 minutes from the break with a shot from the edge of the box which took a marked deflection off Efe Ambrose before looping over Craig Gordon,

On the hour mark Hoops captain Scott Brown, playing only his second game of the season after recovering from a hamstring injury, sent in a drive from outside the box which hit Andre Ramalho and the ball spun into the net.

Gordon made several saves, a couple of them brilliant, to keep the home side at bay but he had no chance in the 77th minute with skipper Jonatan Soriano's 25-yard free-kick which flew high into the top corner.

However, manager Ronny Deila will probably see this as a decent result against the top seeds as he prepares to face Dinamo Zagreb next month with Romanian outfit FC Astra also in the section.

Salzburg's 32,000-capacity stadium was less than half-full at kick-off with the few hundred Hoops fans who made the trip seeing Wakaso for the first time.

The Ghanaian winger, on loan from Rubin Kazan, made a dream start to his Hoops' career. He did not break stride as he ran on to a Kris Commons pass at the edge of the box and sent a left-footed shot past Salzburg keeper Peter Gulacsi and in at the far corner.

It was a body blow for the home side who had started the better but they upped the pace and came close when midfielder Kevin Kampl curled a shot wide from the edge of the box after being set up by Christoph Leitgeb.

The game opened up further.

Gordon made a decent save down at his right-hand post from Soriano.

In the 31st minute the Hoops number one then made a brilliant finger-tip save from Ramalho after the Salzburg defender had escaped the Hoops defence to get his head on to a Soriano free-kick, the resultant corner coming to nothing.

The Salzburg pressure mounted but their equaliser owed much to good fortune when Alan's shot from the edge of the box, after he had been played in by Kampl, struck the luckless Ambrose and sped past Gordon.

The Scottish champions were looking for the respite of the half-time whistle but before then midfielder Marcel Sabitzer fired wide from the edge of the box.

Four minutes after the break Gordon made yet another fine save, this time pushing Alan's powerful drive round the post for a corner, which came to nothing.

In the 52nd minute Hoops striker Stefan Scepovic tried his luck with a long-distance punt and came within a couple of feet of scoring a remarkable goal.

However, that incident was out of kilter with proceedings.

Three minutes later Gordon came to Celtic's rescue again with a double-save, first parrying a drive from Sabitzer into the air and then somehow clawing away Alan's close-range header from the loose ball.

Against the run of play, Celtic took the lead.

Ramalho thought he had done his job when he headed clear a Callum McGregor cross but watched Brown smash the ball back at goal, taking a nick off the Brazilian defender to wrong foot Gulacsi.

Anthony Stokes replaced Scepovic after 67 minutes but Salzburg came back again, Alan skimming the outside of the post with an effort from the edge of the box.

There was no surprise when Salzburg levelled although Soriano's free-kick, after Emilio Izaguirre had fouled Sabitzer, was perfectly-executed, giving Gordon no chance.
