CELTIC…0

PSV…1

(Depay 32)

CELTIC went down 1-0 to PSV today (Saturday) in the opening game of the Maspalomas Cup.

The Dutch league-leaders scored on the half-hour mark through Memphis Depay to take the win in a relatively even game which saw Celtic control the second half.

Ronny Deila named a strong starting XI for the Hoops’ first game of the tournament and made only four changes from the side that defeated Kilmarnock in the league prior to the departure for Gran Canaria.

Lukasz Zaluska, Darnell Fisher, Callum McGregor and John Guidetti replaced Craig Gordon, Adam Matthews, Kris Commons and Stefan Johansen as the manager took the chance to shuffle his pack.

Celtic put the Eredivisie league-leaders under pressure early on, forcing Remko Pasveer in goal into two uncomfortable clearances but the team from Holland soon settled.

The manager was then forced to make a substitution within the first few minutes when captain Scott Brown went in for a slide challenge but took a knock to the face after catching his studs in the dry pitch. He was replaced by Aleksandar Tonev.

The Bulgarian got straight into the action and tested Pasveer with a long range shot from the left but it was well-saved.

Memphis Depay and Rai Vloet did well to create good openings for the Dutch side with over-lapping runs on the wings but the Celtic defence were up to the early challenge.

At the other end Pasveer looked shaky under pressure and had to scramble to his back post to tip a cross from Emilio Izaguirre onto the upright before saving well from a Virgil van Dijk header.

As the half wore on PSV began to grow more into the game. Their 4-3-3 formation dragged Celtic’s midfield into wide spaces which left room for Depay, Jurgen Locadia and Kenneth Paal to find room on the edge of the box.

They threatened with a string of dangerous free kicks from the edge of the box before taking the lead on the half hour mark when the Hoops failed to deal with a Locadia cross from the right.

The tricky winger managed to get past Izaguirre and cross to the back post where his ball-in was met by van Dijk but fell kindly to Depay who volleyed home from six yards.

Celtic tried to regain their composure after the goal but the dry, sandy surface made it difficult to play. Scepovic did well to win the Bhoys some space up the pitch, using his strength to shield the ball and win free kicks.

Liam Henderson also hooked a shoot over from inside the box but it was PSV who went close to getting a second goal before half time when Locadia benefited from a loose ball on the edge of the Celtic box.

Van Dijk did well to push the winger wide, however, and Zaluska saved the shot.

PSV started the second half in the same vein and won an early corner. The Hoops were pinned back after the set piece which allowed Vloet room to shoot but his right footed effort went safely wide.

Celtic continued to work away at their passing game and started to find their men better in the second period. The Bhoys used the possession to push up the pitch and won a string of corners but couldn’t convert from the chances.

Pasveer remained untested in the PSV goal but Zaluska was busy at the other end. He had to save well first from Ritzmaier’s long distance shot before tipping Guardado’s deflected effort onto the cross bar.

That sparked the Bhoys into life and they began to push PSV back and create chances.

Substitute Leigh Griffiths harried the Dutch back line and went close with a near post flick on before Callum McGregor forced Pasveer into a good double save for a Celtic corner.

McGregor was then replaced by Aidan Nesbitt and John Guidetti made way for Joe Thomson as the manager gave some of the Young Hoops a run out.

The youngsters held their own against the Dutch league-leaders, forcing PSV into difficult areas on the wings and thwarting attacks.

Jamie Lindsay also came on for Nir Bitton to give Celtic a completely new shape as the game drew to a close.

The Bhoys managed to stop PSV playing in midfield and found space behind the Dutch side’s defence, with the sprightly Nesbitt proving a constant threat.

He did well to latch on to a through ball from Tonev and as the clock ticked down and he looked to have beaten the offside trap but a late flag went up and cancelled the chance for Celtic, consigning the Hoops to defeat.
