  • 3rd Qualifying round of the Champions League, First Leg
  • Celtic have to go thru three rounds of qualifiers to make group stages.
  • Qarabag is in Azerbaijan who just won v Rudar in the last round.
  • Celtic had won 6-1 agg v Starjanan of Iceland in last round.
  • Around 250 Qarabag fans came to Glasgow.
  • Great size crowd at Celtic after concerns of how many would turn up. Celtic only late allowed the match to be televised on Celtic TV only, but then pulled it and was only shown on a delayed transmission claiming it was due to fears of a DOS attack on the live feed. Nobody believed the reason. Concerns were high about low crowd if game was on TV.
  • The Daily Record printed a spoof story from @DohaCSC about being caught in Iraq peeing outside bus then being barred from the country, story was pulled it and then they pulled the google reference. They were pawned!
  • Craig Gordon has signed an extension to 2018. Warmly welcomed.

(joebloggscity of KDS)
Boyata is a hero again, but why was Ciftci starting? (apparently as Griffiths had a toothache problem and didn't get proper sleep the night before). Ciftci's unready and untested at this level! Frustrating.

(dessybhoy of KDS)
good result. Would be feeling a lot more confident if we were going into the second leg with the second goal, however, they didn't seem too likely to score. Still sounded like a rusty performance but hopefully that will improve with another game under the belt against Ross County. Cifti really isn't a natural goalscorer and Commons made a real difference when he came on. Would start with Commons and Griffiths over there. Hopeful we'll progress to the play-offs

(Midfield Maestro of KDS)
Decent result but we played poorly.

They are a decent, well-organised defensive unit but I'm not convinced they are more than that. We should have tested their defence and goalkeeper more. The reason we didn't was that the passing of our central three was very slack and we didn't have enough movement in the final third. Johansen, Bitton and Brown were all very lackadaisical and took too much time on the ball. We need to inject a bit more pace into our build up play. There were a number of occasions were Ciftci was showing for the early ball into feet, only for the midfielders to shuffle the ball sideways.

Armstrong was ok and I thought GMS put in a very good shift, but we didn't get him squared up against their full backs enough.

Ciftci did ok but needs to get sharper and we need to get our attacking midfield three closer to him.

Boyata defended well and scored a great header. Virgil comfortable throughout and unlucky not to score.

Izzy was Izzy. Lustig worryingly looks to have lost another yard of pace.

Absolutely no penetration from us today and yet – had Virgil's header gone in or had Ciftci taken his chance – we'd be looking at a very good result. I think we'll score in Baku.

(Arsene P of KDS)
Bit of a nervy night really.

There was no penetration of any note (1st shot, 23 minutes, scuffed by GMS, 2nd 50odd), Brown's passing was poor, and Bitton wasn't effective going forward.
Wingers did nothing spectacular, and Çiftçi didn't get anything concrete to work with off poor service, his hold up play has potential, as he did get on the end of punts and lay them off. I think he may have something, but he needs to find his mojo. He's trying too hard to impress though. Maybe the 1st goal will settle him.

Full backs didn't show anything going forward, but Izzy looks more and more a liability defensively.

3 daft bookings. Izzy's tackle was unnecessary, van ****'s shirt pull and foul was because of a bit of casual play on his part which gave the ball away when he could have passed it to safety quicker, and Forrest's kicking away of the ball was just stupidty.

An "interesting" bench last night. Only one striker as sub? Hmmmm.

Qarabag were tidy enough and stuck to the game plan adequately whilst going for the draw and we'll see how we cope when they come at us, as they'll have to. If we score they need three and that looked unlikely last night until after we'd scored, and then they started to play offensively, so there could be a bit of arse twitching next week until (if) we get settled.

We can't really be as bland next week, so I'm hopeful of improvement, and a spark from somewhere.
Maybe Saturday will show how much benefit these early competitive games help as part of the pre-season.

It had been suggested that to stand any real chance of reaching the next round of Champions League qualification Celtic would need to take at least a two-goal lead into next week’s second leg against Qarabag. There was talk of exhausting journeys into the Azerbaijani unknown – as if the Scots will travel east by 19th-century steamboat – placing even more importance on getting a comprehensive result at home. As it transpired, Ronny Deila’s side were thankful to have anything at all to stow in their hand luggage.

“The game is definitely not won yet,” the Norwegian admitted, adding that the 1-0 win had been a reflection of the game as a whole. “In European football this is a good position. If we score [in Baku], they need three. I’m very happy that we didn’t concede against a very good team that was very hard to play against. We have given ourselves a good chance to go through now.”

Celtic might have been playing in front of their own fans, on their own patch, but this was still something of an exploratory job for Deila and his players. The Scottish game has little right in its current condition to harbour such arrogance but there remains the urge to write off any side rising from a footballing backwater like Azerbaijan. Few inside Parkhead could have recognised many of the visitors’ starting lineup but Qarabag are a better side than their pedigree and stature suggest and a significant step-up in quality from Stjarnan whom Celtic disposed of in the last round.

Dedryck Boyata’s winner – a thumping header from a corner kick, very similar to the one he scored in the previous round – therefore came as relief to a Parkhead crowd that had grown increasingly tetchy with every tepid pass or wayward clip into the channels, of which there were plenty.

With every game the former Manchester City centre-back looks more comfortable in his new surroundings and Belgium’s national team assistant, Vital Borkelmans, was there to watch another defensive prospect – as if his nation needs any more. “I didn’t know he was going to be here, so that was a nice surprise,” the 24-year-old Boyata said.

Much of the build-up had centred not on how Qarabag would line up but on whom Deila would favour up front; the Norwegian opted for Nadir Ciftci over the in-form Leigh Griffiths. “Actually it wasn’t so hard [a decision] because Leigh struggled all night with his teeth – he was at the dentist in the morning, so he didn’t sleep so much,” Deila said when asked how close a call it had been between the two strikers. “That made the decision easier, otherwise it would have been very hard.”

Celtic’s £1.5m summer signing from Dundee United, Ciftci is still awaiting his first goal in green and white and, on the basis of another erratic performance, he is no closer to finding the mark.

He passed up one particularly sparkling chance in the second half, shooting straight at the goalkeeper from only yards out following an uncharacteristically botched clearance by Qarabag inside their own area.

The miss prompted murmurings of Griffiths’ name from the home fans and Deila hooked the striker moments later.By next week Griffiths’ toothache should give way to a selection headache for Deila because Celtic are a more dynamic and energetic outfit with the former in the team.

As things stand the Scottish champions are still toiling to find their best form so early in the season and Deila is willing to accept that the trip to Azerbaijan presents his team with a great risk to their Champions League qualification campaign.

“We had pressure but we need to turn that pressure into more chances,” he said. “We need to play like we did for the Inter Milan game [last season] to get a good result.”

Celtic 1-0 Qarabag: Ronny Deila seeks away goal to finish tie
Celtic boss Ronny Deila is hoping his side can get an away goal next week to all but finish their tie with Qarabag.

Dedryck Boyata's late headed goal gave Deila's side a 1-0 lead to take over to Azerbaijan in the Champions League third qualifying round.

"We have to get one goal and then they need three," he said. "We have to play a top match to get through."

"I'm happy that we got a clean sheet and got a goal – it was very important into the next leg."

The Scottish champions were frustrated by their visitors for much of the first leg in Glasgow but finally found a way through when substitute Kris Commons' corner was met by Belgian defender Boyata.

"Defensively we were excellent," Deila said. "In the last third of the pitch we didn't get enough crosses but we got enough to get one goal and I'm happy with that.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila and striker Leigh Griffiths Deila again left Leigh Griffiths on the bench

"One-zero is a very good result.

"That's one of the best teams that's been here since I've been here.

"It's going to be a totally different game [in Baku] and they have to go forward to score goals and we'll be [playing] more on breaks and we have speed up front.

"You can see they've had the same coach [Gurban Gurbanov] for seven years. They build, play the same way and in the end, they play with confidence, they rely on their system and you can see they're a good team."

Nadir Ciftci again started in attack ahead of Leigh Griffiths for Celtic before the latter came on in place of Nir Bitton as Celtic chased a goal.

Ciftci subsequently made way for midfielder Commons, having missed a couple of decent chances for the hosts.

However, Deila praised Ciftci's "great attitude" and said of his two principle strikers: "Those two can be used in different ways and can also play together so I'm delighted at having both of them."

BBC Scotland at Celtic Park •Boyata with late goal for Celtic
•Second leg in Azerbaijan next Wednesday
Dedryck Boyata kept Celtic's Champions League hopes on track with a late winner against Qarabag.

Celtic had a frustrating night in the third qualifying round first leg with Gary Mackay-Steven's fumbled shot the only one on target in the first half.

The Azerbaijani champions were no easier to contend with in the second half, though goalkeeper Ibrahim Sehic's stunning save denied Virgil van Dijk.

However, Kris Commons' cross found Boyata, who headed in from six yards.

A fractious night at Celtic Park but a precious victory, and a clean sheet, for Ronny Deila's team in this Champions League third qualifying round tie, ahead of next Wednesday's second leg.

In the days before this match, Celtic made big play of the respect they had for the visitors, citing their impressive results in the Europa League last season and reminding their supporters that this tie could be an almighty grind.

And a grind it was. Qarabag created little or nothing but in their pursuit of a cushion, Celtic toiled in the opening half.

There was a lack of accuracy in their play, a lack of wit to cut open a visiting defence that was cool for the most part. Save for a tame Mackay-Steven shot and a snappy Richard Almeida free-kick that rebounded off Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon to safety, there was precious little to excite.

Qarabag looked comfortable at the back. Fearless, even. More than once they played intricate passing in their own penalty area where others might have panicked. Their ease was a polar opposite to the anxiety of the home support – big in number and big in angst.

It was another frustrating night in front of goal for Nadir Ciftci It was another frustrating night in front of goal for Nadir Ciftci

That mood was only added to in the minutes before Boyata freed them from their footballing purgatory.

Celtic carved out decent openings early in the second half, two of them falling to Nadir Ciftci and both of them missed.

The first a header that flashed wide of Ibrahim Sehic's goal and the second thumped straight down the goalkeeper's throat.

Midway through the half, Van Dijk thumped a magnificent header on Qarabag's goal only to see Sehic make a save from the Gods. Soon after, the Dutchman lashed a shot over Sehic's crossbar.

Deila emptied his bench in search of inspiration. James Forrest came on for the hushed Stuart Armstrong. In a statement of intent, Leigh Griffiths, a striker, replaced Nir Biton, a holding midfielder. Then Commons appeared in place of Ciftci.

And it was Commons' delivery that finally unlocked Qarabag. When Boyata stole in ahead of Sehic to score it released a pressure valve inside Celtic Park.

In the process, it gave his team a vital lead on the tortuous journey to the white heat of Baku next week.
