Trivia

  • Back after the spate of unwanted international friendlies.
  • Roberts scores his debut goal and for many is the star of the whole show.
  • Long break since last match due to friendly internationals in prep for Euros.
  • Celtic had 33 players called up to national squads (Junior & Senior).
  • Belgium: 22nd March: Terrorist attacks carried out at the main Brussels Airport & at a Metro station. Many innocent people killed. RIP
  • Praise for Tierney rising, reports are very positive following his debut for Scotland with hints that clubs down south going to nick him in the summer.
  • Linked with Oxford United winger Irish international Callum O’Dowda, as a like-for-like replacement for James Forrest who is set to exit Parkhead in the summer.
  • Celtic will have their fixtures in the International Champions Cup confirmed at 3pm and could face Barcelona, Leicester and Inter Milan.
  • Scotland vice manger (and Ex-Celt) Mark McGhee on ex-Celt Tony Watt: “I remember saying to Tony when he was with us in a squad early in our tenure that I would love to work with him every day. He is the sort of player I would love to get a hold of and really smack around. He has got tremendous ability and I hope that we can throw down gauntlets to him, challenges and incentives to him for coming back again and being part of the World Cup campaign. Tony has been his own worst enemy in many ways but the word on the street is that he is starting to get the message, therefore Gordon has trusted that he could bring him here.”
  • Scotland player Liam Bridcutt has dismissed the furore surrounding his tackle on Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko at Hampden on Tuesday night. Scotland midfielder Bridcutt was booked for a fierce challenge on Sviatchenko which Denmark manager Age Hareide described as “horrific” and potentially career-threatening. It almost sent him to hospital.
  • The SPFL and Celtic tried to dissuade the introduction of new laws that would give Scottish football fans a greater say in the running of their clubs. Laws are just pandering to the voters and quite a cheap shot.
  • Former Rangers stars could find themselves in deep financial trouble under new legislation aimed at targeting individuals who benefitted from EBTs.
  • Efe Ambrose criticised by Nigeria fans at fault for a lost goal in a vital game (so it's not just at Celtic).
  • Dutch & World footballing legend Johan Cryuff passed away. RIP

ReviewCeltic 3 Hearts 1

Another three vital points. Started slowly and did not to comfortable with Hearts passing their way through us. Thankfully got a goal back and Roberts goals, especially the second half meant we just closed the game down.

Both Roberts goals were peaches, liked the wee dink over the keeper for the first, Larssonesque in its execution.

Thought there were several players playing a lot better, Johansen looked good especially when moved and thought Boyota looked a lot better. Interesting as it appears that he and Sviatchenko appeared to swap positions.

No real surprise on how physical the Jambos were , I mean what sort of player was Neilson.

Madden is hopeless.

A pretty lightweight Celtic team struggling to keep possession, but a great result in the end. Well in good control second half and always looked more likely to score a goal. A bit disappointed by the performance and I don´t think long balls up was an a real part of the game-plan, with Roberts, Griffths and GMS on top. Still, in hindsight, who could criticise Deila for starting Roberts.

Some notes:

– Will Deila even consider putting Brown on the bench?

– Roberts has clear weaknesses defensively, but what a rare talent he is.

– Johansen was a one man defence first half and had some great through passes in the second. Good match from him.

– Great first 25 minutes by GMS and he looked to earn the MOTM. Faded when Roberts started to attract the ball on the right, but GMS deserves a place in the team.

– I hope Boyata can get stabilised on his highest level, cause he has everything needed to become a great defender. Celtic have some young, exiting central backs at the club in Sviatchenko, Simunovic and Boyata. I hope at least a couple them can lift their game to an European level.

– Kazim-Richards receives criticism for not scoring goals, but when being forced to play long, you need someone like him to get on the ball. It looked easier for Celtic to get out of defence after Kazim came on. In a 4-3-3, he should be starting.

– Some really great efforts from Griffiths on free kicks. Seldom to see Celtic being a threat in these situations.

Celtic 3-1 Hearts: Roberts brace sends Hoops 7 points clear

http://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/competitions/premiership/celtic-3-1-hearts-roberts-brace-sends-hoops-7-points-clear-1-4088900ANTHONY BROWN

HEARTS’ bid to overhaul Aberdeen in the battle for second place in the Premiership appears to have fizzled out after clinical Celtic handed them a second consecutive defeat.

The Tynecastle side looked in a good position to end their nine-year wait for a league win at Parkhead when Jamie Walker gave them an early lead.

However, despite playing well for long periods, Robbie Neilson’s team found themselves trailing 3-1 by the 48th minute after a fine equaliser from Gary Mackay-Steven and a couple of superbly-taken goals from on-loan Manchester City teenager Patrick Roberts. Juwon Oshaniwa’s late dismissal for a second bookable offence exacerbated a defeat that leaves Hearts nine points behind second-place Aberdeen with just seven games to play.

Neilson made five changes to the side that started the 3-0 loss at home to St Johnstone a fortnight previously as Alim Ozturk, Igor Rossi, Sam Nicholson, Prince Buaben and Oshaniwa came in for Blazej Augustyn, Jordan McGhee, Liam Smith, Don Cowie and Abiola Dauda.

Oshaniwa’s inclusion was the biggest surprise of the visitors’ team selection and the Nigerian, who hadn’t featured in any of his team’s previous five matches, was deployed as left wing-back in a 3-5-1-1 formation.

Hearts took the lead with their first attempt of the game in the fifth minute when Jamie Walker, who was playing just behind lone striker Juanma, pinged a delightful finish high past Craig Gordon from a central position on the edge of the box after being teed up by Juanma.

The visitors had looked comfortable until conceding a free-kick just outside their penalty area in the 13th minute. Leigh Griffiths took it and almost found the top corner, but Neil Alexander reacted superbly to push it behind for a corner. Within a minute, the hosts were level when Mackay-Steven pounced on a partially-cleared corner and rasped home a powerful low shot from just inside the box.

Hearts didn’t let this setback knock them out of their stride, however, and they had a chance to restore their lead in the 16th minute when John Souttar’s long diagonal cross found Oshaniwa all on his own in the box but the Nigerian was unable to control it on his chest, and Gordon gathered.

Celtic threatened a minute later when Tom Rogic released Griffiths on goal but Alexander stood up and ushered the striker wide before making another fine save.

Hearts midfielder Arnaud Djoum got himself into a good position inside the box in the 21st minute after good work by Oshaniwa and Walker to set him up but his low angled shot from 12 yards out ran harmlessly past the far post.

The visitors went close to regaining their advantage when Ozturk curled a 25-yard free-kick off the top of the bar after Juanma had been fouled by Scott Brown.

Hearts carved out another decent opportunity in the 34th minute when Nicholson delivered a low cross from the right, but Juanma hooked his shot over at the near post.

The Tynecastle side were made to pay a minute later when Roberts ran on to a lovely disguised pass from Rogic and burst into the right side of the box before dinking a deft angled finish over Alexander and in at the far post from just outside the six-yard box.

Tempers flared in the 38th minute after Oshaniwa and Rogic clashed heads following a reckless challenge by the Hearts man. Buaben and Griffiths were booked for their part in the melee before Oshaniwa was cautioned after receiving treatment.

Right on half-time Alexander did superbly to save another goalbound free kick from Griffiths.

Hearts’ hopes of fighting back were dealt a blow three minutes into the second half when Roberts took a Johansen lay-off outside the box and burst into the danger area before curling a low shot beyond Rossi and Alexander.

The goal had the effect of taking the sting out of the game. Hearts still enjoyed their fair share of possession, but it wasn’t until the 74th minute, when Ozturk’s header from an Oshaniwa free-kick was saved by Gordon, that they carved out a decent chance to pull one back.

Dauda then went close with an 89th minute header from fellow sub Smith’s cross which was tipped over by Gordon. Hearts’ misery was complete in stoppage time when Oshaniwa received a second yellow card after being contentiously adjudged to have fouled Nir Bitton.

Celtic (4-2-3-1): Gordon; Lustig, Boyata, Sviatchenko, Tierney; Brown, Johansen; Roberts, Rogic (Bitton 45), Mackay-Steven (McGregor 68); Griffiths (Kazim-Richards 77). Subs not used: Fasan, Ambrose, Commons, Forrest. Booked: Brown (24), Griffiths (38)

Hearts (3-5-1-1): Alexander; Ozturk, Souttar, Rossi (Smith 65); Nicholson, Buaben (Dauda 82), Kitchen, Djoum, Oshaniwa; Walker (Reilly 65); Juanma. Subs not used: Hamilton, Augustyn, Pallardo, McGhee. Booked: Buaben (38), Oshaniwa (40), Rossi (46), Kitchen (75). Sent off: Oshaniwa (90).

Patrick Roberts scores for Celtic against Hearts
Highlights: Celtic 3-1 Hearts

A superb double from 19-year-old Patrick Roberts helped Celtic to a convincing win over third-top Hearts.

Jamie Walker gave the visitors a stunning and deserved lead early on, but that was cancelled out shortly after by Gary Mackay-Steven.

Roberts scored with two fine strikes, one in each half, while Hearts' Juwon Oshaniwa was sent off late on.

The win edges Celtic closer to the title and puts more distance between them and second-placed Aberdeen.

With Tom Rogic's last-minute winner against Kilmarnock having eased some of the pressure on manager Ronny Deila, the stuttering reigning champions knew they had to build on the feel-good factor that followed the Australian's precious Rugby Park strike.

The healthy home support inside Celtic Park was evidence of that and of the edge that's always attached to this fixture.

But it was the small band of Hearts fans who were celebrating in the Glasgow sunshine after only six minutes.

Spanish striker Juanma held off Dedryck Boyata just inside the Celtic box and slipped the ball to Jamie Walker, who smashed a shot high into top left hand corner of Craig Gordon's goal.

The Celtic defence could have dealt with it better, but it was a fine strike from a player in top form.

The visitors were ahead for just 10 minutes, though, and the strike to level was as impressive as the opener.

Leigh Griffiths' fierce free-kick was palmed behind by Neil Alexander, but the ball broke to Mackay-Steven from the resulting corner and he lashed the ball left-footed low past the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper from just outside the box.

An engrossing battle for the upper hand followed, but it was Hearts who saw more of the ball and almost took the lead when Alim Ozturk's curling 25-yard free-kick bounced off the Celtic crossbar.

However, 10 minutes before the break, Roberts raised the roof with a sumptuous goal to give Ronny Deila's side the lead.

Rogic's tenacity on the right hand side paid off and when he knocked the ball through to Roberts, Celtic's young Manchester City loanee delicately lobbed the ball over Alexander from eight yards.

With both teams fully committed, it threatened to boil over following a clash of heads between Rogic and Oshaniwa – Griffiths and Buaben had to be separated and both had their names taken by referee Bobby Madden.

Less than five minutes into the second half, the on-loan hot shot was at it again with his second and Celtic's third.

Griffiths fed Stefan Johnansen deep inside the Hearts half and, when the Norwegian's flick found Roberts, the 19-year-old skipped into the box and curled the ball left footed low past Alexander.

Hearts looked deflated for a spell after that and, while they continued to enjoy long periods of possession, it was Celtic's Griffiths and Callum McGregor who went closest to scoring.

The visitors' misery was compounded in stoppage time when Oshaniwa was sent off for a second yellow card.

Patrick Roberts trusts Celtic manager Ronny Deila's judgement
BBC

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35954088Highlights: Celtic 3-1 Hearts

Patrick Roberts has confidence manager Ronny Deila knows how best to use him in the Celtic team.

The on-loan Manchester City winger scored his first Celtic goals in Saturday's 3-1 win over Hearts.

Roberts, 19, has been used mainly as a substitute since joining the Scottish champions at the end of the winter transfer window.

"The manager knows what I can do and I always do my best whenever I am on the pitch," said Roberts.

"I trust his judgement. He picks the team and I have to do whatever I have to do."
'Fans are who you play for'

Hearts briefly led at Celtic Park through Jamie Walker's impressive strike, Gary Mackay-Steven levelling.

And Roberts, signed by City from Fulham for around £12m, came to the fore by finishing well either side of half-time to secure the three points for Deila's men – moving them seven points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

"It is a challenge for everyone," added Roberts. "Everyone wants to play in the team and be involved.

"You wouldn't be here if you didn't want to do that, so yes, everyone is competing, but it is healthy and good for the club and we are pushing in the right direction.

"I just enjoy playing football whenever I am out on the field.

"It was a very good three points. My first and second goals – it was a good feeling, especially in front of all those fans.

"Fans are who you play for. Without them, you would be nothing.

"It is joy to play in front of them and score goals for them and I will try to carry on doing that."
