Trivia

  • International Champions Cup
  • Pimped up set of friendly matches wrapped up as an international tournament.
  • Played in Limerick, Ireland.
  • First game between two since UEFA Cup KO stages two seasons back which Inter Milan won overall.
  • Celtic’s big game is next week in Champions League playoffs.
  • Celtic side captained by Ciftci!
  • Side was a ragtag of second string and development players for Celtic.
  • Thistle manager moaning saying it is being disrespectful this morning (or is the record being the record twisting words)? Clubs agreed on this rule so stop greeting!! Aberdeen took advantage of this rule in recent seasons to prepare for European ties. Thistle might have also been the opposition that time. So the Thistle gaffer is probably a bit pissed off that it's Thistle again who are affected. It's not disrespectful though as Celtic asked for this weekend free before we even knew who the opposition were. So it's nothing personal as far as Celtic/Thistle are concerned.
  • Olympics past it’s first week, so far GB is doing very well in the medals. Ireland nothing so far. Enjoyable stuff, but Rio is mostly a shambles with some poor luck too.
  • Celtic sign De Vries as backup goalkeeper.
  • Transfer rumours:
  • Johansen to Fulham?
  • Celtic have been linked with a shock move for Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger. This if it happened would be the biggest capture in Scottish football (be it loan or permanent) for over the past generation! Most think it's a spoof story, he'd be too expensive.

That was really encouraging. We have some excellent young players coming through, Ajer and Christie especially. All our players look so much more comfortable on the ball and more confident when passing it. The Rodgers effect is running right through the club. That team tonight would probably win the SPFL. The future is definitely green and white!

Very encouraging how our players seem willing to a) accept the ball when they are tightly marked and b) pass to someone who is tightly marked. Noticed this over the last few games and it's a vital part of being a good side. Over the last few years our inability or unwillingness to do this has as much as any lack of 'guile' led to such a pedestrian, dreary style of play.

Well surprised with Limerick ,very nice place and the prices
for bevvy are on a par with Glasgow ,loads of Bhoys from the
north down to see the Celts too and even a couple of supporters buses
from Glasgow made the journey, the game was a typical friendly match
although the ref let a few dodgy tackles go from Inter in the first half.

CELTIC…0

INTER MILAN…2
(Eder 45, Candreva 71)

GOALS in either half from Italian internationalists Eder and Antonio Candreva consigned Celtic to a 2-0 defeat against Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup in Limerick.

Both teams spurned opportunities to make the breakthrough before Eder headed the Nerazzurri ahead seconds before the half-time whistle.

The Scottish champions were on top early in the second half and only the width of the crossbar denied Nadir Ciftci a leveller.

And that proved costly as Candreva sealed the victory for the Italian giants with 19 minutes left on the clock, chipping over the stranded Leo Fasan, who produced a number of excellent saves throughout the match.

Nonetheless, there were plenty of positives for Brendan Rodgers to ponder as Celtic turn their attentions to next week’s UEFA Champions League play-off against Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

Dedryck Boyata made his long-awaited return from injury, which saw him miss Euro 2016 for Belgium, as Celtic contested their third and final match of the prestigious tournament.

Along with naming the big defender in his starting XI, Brendan Rodgers gave several players who have been on the fringes of the first team in recent weeks a chance to impress, while a selection of Development Squad players were named on the bench.

Frank de Boer, meanwhile, in his first game in charge of the Nerazzurri, had named a strong side, including the likes of Mauro Icardi, Eder, Ivan Perisic and Geoffrey Kondogbia.

And it was the Serie A side who threatened first inside the opening three minutes when Perisic broke clear down the left and cut the ball back for Ever Banega, whose ferocious shot was brilliantly saved by Fasan.

Celtic, however, soon settled into proceedings and began to string some passes together, and a powerful run from Ciftci, who captained the side, forced Andrea Rannochia into a foul, preventing the striker from breaking clear down the right.

Fasan had to make another smart stop from the lively Perisic in the 12th minute, but the Hoops were growing in confidence and Inter keeper Samir Handanovic was called into action for the first time by Ryan Christie’s low shot from 20 yards after he had collected a return pass from Ciftci.

Both then teams came close to opening the scoring. First, Stefan Johansen cleared Andrea Ranocchia’s header off the line in the 25th minute and then at the other end, Ciftci’s exquisite flick sent Stuart Armstrong through on goal but he couldn’t beat Handanovic.

As the half wore on, the game was opening up and Kristoffer Ajer had to made a timely tackle on Icardi after the Argentina internationalist has fastened onto a ball over the top, while Fasan also had to make saves from Eder and Kondogbia.

Brendan Rodgers’ side were constructing some fine passages of play themselves, though, with Liam Henderson and Christie prominent, and after the impressive Saidy Janko had embarked on a rampaging run into the box, the full-back picked Liam Henderson who lashed over.

On the stroke of half-time, however, Inter broke the deadlock. Fasan had mane another fine stop at his near post from Banega but only at the expense of a corner. When the cross came into the box, it was flicked on by Perisic and Eder was on hand to convert at the far post.

Determined to give their thousands of Irish supporters something to cheer, Celtic grabbed the initiative at the start of the second half.

Efe Ambrose, who had replaced Boyata at the interval, headed narrowly wide from Emilio Izaguirre’s searching cross following a corner.

On the hour mark, Celtic came even closer to an equaliser. After a wonderful interchange of passing, Armstrong lofted the ball towards Ciftci, who sent a first-time, dipping volley that crashed off the top of the bar with Handanovic rooted the spot.

It was a superb effort from the Turkish striker that deserved better but in the 71st they found themselves trailing by two goals as substitute Antonio Candreva latched onto a pass down to the right and beat Fasan with a sublime lob.

Despite this setback, Celtic, who had introduced 16-year-old Jack Aitchison from the bench for the closing stages, continued to persevere and the ever-willing Christie tried his luck twice to no avail, with Armstrong having the last effort of an entertaining friendly.

Have your say

Brendan Rodgers admits he would have preferred to play a Scottish Premiership game yesterday, instead of a glamour friendly with Inter Milan in Ireland.

Celtic warmed up for their Champions League play-off with Hapoel Be’er Sheva with a 2-0 defeat by the Italians in Limerick, as part of the International Champions Cup.

Rodgers left the majority of his first team starters in Glasgow, where the club had been scheduled to play Partick Thistle in league action, a fixture that was controversially postponed.

“We’ve played about seven games in 20-odd days, so it was the perfect preparation for us,” Rodgers said. “But my own feeling, coming up to Scotland is I don’t think we should be playing a friendly. That’s my personal take on it. The league has started, we should be playing competitive football.

“We had a lot of friendlies already… to come here commercially it’s great, for the fans it great, we travel the world and we want to take the team around, but from a football perspective, I’d rather be playing a competition.

“The players back home, though, they have played midweek, weekend, so to get an opportunity to recover is good. They worked really hard on Saturday morning, they weren’t sitting on their holiday, they’re getting ready for Wednesday.”

Most of the players expected to play on Wednesday night didn’t even make it to Glasgow Airport’s departure lounge with Scott Sinclair, Kolo Toure, Craig Gordon, Scott Brown, Leigh Griffiths, Kieran Tierney, Patrick Roberts, Moussa Dembele, Nir Bitton, Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor and James Forrest left behind.

As a sign of his growing importance to the Celtic squad, even Eoghan O’Connell was left in Scotland, missing the opportunity to play on the ground that made his cousin Paul a Munster rugby legend.

All told, Stuart Armstrong and Saidy Janko were the only players starting who also started against Astana ten days ago.

There was a welcome return to action for Dedryck Boyata, the centre half, playing alongside the 19-year-old academy product Jamie McCart.

Kirstoffer Ajer covered in front of the back four, with Liam Henderson and Stefan Johansen supporting Armstrong, Ryan Christie and captain for the day Nadir Ciftci in attack.

Despite the mix and match nature of the Celtic side, the first half was relatively interesting, with some of Rodgers’ fringe stars impressing. Leo Fasan, in goal, showed he’s up for a fight following the arrival of Dorus de Vries, with a solid first half performance blotted only by Eder’s headed goal.

The 22-year-old did well to deny Ever Banega with a strong one-arm save just two minutes in, and denied Ivan Perisic moments later after a miscommunication with Boyata.

The experienced Inter midfield enjoyed the better of the first half play, but Rodgers will have been impressed by how Liam Henderson and Kristoffer Ajer grew into the challenge.

Fasan punched clear a thumping effort by Eder as the break approached, and it looked set to end scoreless until naive defending at a set piece cost Celtic, with Eder nipping in ahead of Janko at the back post to nod home.

Efe Ambrose, a half time sub, headed narrowly over after the restart, before Ciftci almost completed the move of the match, only to see his volley come back off the crossbar. But when Frank De Boer sent on Antonio Candreva and Felipe Melo, the former showed his class with a stunning chip over Fasan to seal victory
