Post-Note: Celtic get charged by UEFA for use of flares
Celtic get fined again! Approx 12k
Post Note 2: UEFA performed an embarrassing Twitter about turn after posting a picture of the Green Brigade's Muhammad Ali banner along with the words "Monday Motivation" – just days after fining the Celtic supporters. European football’s governing body hit the Parkhead club with a €12,000 punishment for pyrotechnics which accompanied the banner before the Europa League victory over Cluj earlier this month.

Classic night of European football – big crowd, pitch looking great under the lights, Celtic playing attacking football, cracking result and finishing the night in traditional style with the on ramp to the m8 being shut.

(MLE of KDS)
Excellent performance and precisely the reaction we all needed to see from the team after the last Cluj game. To absolutely run over them for 90mins and look defensively solid after what happened in the CL qualifier is tremendous.

Christie,Elyounoussi, Bolingoli, McGregor, Brown, everyone; a real team performance with players who were running through walls for one another. And anybody criticising McGregor's game tonight didn't watch him.

I'm not used to looking at a group and trying to work out what results are best for us to finish top so i'll just be happy to look ahead to the Lazio games and hope that we're able to take 3 points off them.

No Europa League victory can financially compensate Celtic for their failure to reach the Champions League group stage but this was an occasion when restoring pride was much more valuable to Neil Lennon and his players.

They avenged their elimination by Cluj from Europe’s premier tournament earlier in the season with an impressive and fully deserved win over the Romanian champions this time around.

Odsonne Edouard’s ninth goal of the season set them on their way before Mohamed Elyounoussi’s first goal for the club sealed all three points. It takes Celtic to the top of Group E after two rounds of fixtures and sets them up nicely for the visit of top seeds Lazio to Glasgow in three weeks’ time.

Edouard’s 20th minute breakthrough was no more than Celtic deserved for a forceful and vibrant start to the contest, although the striker’s French compatriot Christopher Jullien must have been left a little bemused that his was not the first name on the scoresheet.

The big defender brought a towering threat to a series of set pieces forced by the hosts in the early stages, his first headed attempt from close range brilliantly saved by Giedrius Arlauskis after a clever short corner routine which saw Callum McGregor create the chance.

Boli Bolingoli, not trusted to play at left-back when the teams met earlier in the season during what was a stuttering start to his Celtic career, has settled to his task well since then. The Belgian provided the next opportunity for Jullien who this time looped his header over from around eight yards.

The Cluj defence simply couldn’t get to grips with Jullien who next latched onto Ryan Christie’s cross from the left and saw another header blocked on the line.

Celtic were maintaining a tempo and intensity which suggested the opener was imminent and it duly arrived through a typically composed piece of finishing from Edouard.

McGregor’s threaded pass was gathered on the left by Bolingoli and his perfectly weighted cross was headed precisely by Edouard beyond the helpless Arlauskis from six yards.

Cluj had barely been able to venture out of their own half at this stage but five minutes later thought they had equalised. McGregor, having given the ball away cheaply, was booked for a foul on Mihai Bordeianu on the edge of the Celtic penalty area.

Ciprian Deac’s free-kick was unconvincingly parried by Fraser Forster, allowing the ball to find its way to Kevin Boli who bundled it home. The visitors’ celebrations were quickly muted by a tight but correct offside decision.

Cluj coach Dan Petrescu was well enough to take his place in the technical area, the former Chelsea man having called off from pre-match media duties on Wednesday evening because of illness.

He would have been more heartened by his team’s work as the first half progressed and they managed to disrupt some of Celtic’s momentum.

How the Celtic players rated during Europa League victory over Cluj

Scott Brown tried to get his team back on the front foot with a surge forward from his holding midfield role and his shot from 22 yards rose just over.

But Cluj were now carrying a greater threat on the counter attack, although Mario Rondon was rightly booked for his risible attempt to win a penalty kick when he went down under no sort of challenge at all from Jullien three minutes before the interval.

Celtic appeared re-energised after the break and the ever lively Forrest came close to doubling their lead in the 49th minute when he dragged a shot narrowly wide after a weaving run into the Cluj penalty area.

Forrest is now very much a veteran of these contests as he closes in on a century of European appearances for Celtic and he was instrumental in the move which saw them make it 2-0 in the 59th minute.

Receiving the ball from Elyounoussi, he darted forward down the right and evaded a couple of challenges before laying the ball back into the path of the Norwegian midfielder. Elyounoussi enjoyed a significant slice of good fortune as his shot deflected off the back of Andrei Burca to completely wrong-foot Arlauskis but that did nothing to dilute the raucous celebrations of the Southampton loanee and the home support.

Forster made a fine reaction save to deny Deac as Cluj tried to locate a route back into the contest but Celtic were generally comfortable as they closed the game out. Christie came agonisingly close to adding a third for the hosts when he couldn’t get on the end of an inviting Elyounoussi cross but this was a night when Celtic’s sense of satisfaction was not defined by the margin of victory.

Odsonne Edouard scored his ninth goal of the season with a header in the 20th minute.
Odsonne Edouard's goal set Celtic on the road to a comfortable victory

Celtic climbed top of their Europa League group and went some way to avenging their shock Champions League exit to Cluj by convincingly beating the Romanians in Glasgow.

The Scottish champions were dumped out of the third qualifying round in August by Dan Petrescu's side, but Neil Lennon's men coasted to victory to follow up their draw in Rennes.

Odsonne Edouard started Celtic off in the first half before Mohamed Elyounoussi netted his first goal for the club after the break.

There was no real danger of a repeat of the shock that halted Celtic two months ago, despite Kevin Boli rightly having his effort for the visitors ruled out for offside with the game at 1-0.

Rennes' 2-1 defeat in Rome now means Neil Lennon's side go into the double header against Serie A giants Lazio, starting off in Glasgow in three weeks' time, in a strong position with a one-point lead.

Celtic turn dominance into goals

Petrescu took unwell in Glasgow on the eve of the game and ducked out of his pre-match media commitments. Celtic wanted to make sure they did little to aid his recovery, and left him truly sick to his stomach with the way they set about this match.

Few in the stadium were surprised when Boli Bolingoli crossed delightfully on to the head of Edouard to send Celtic Park into a rapturous rendition of their favourite Stone Roses hit I wanna be adored, with the lyrics slightly adapted to I wanna be Edouard.

It left Cluj facing the music for failing to withstand the torrent. And I don't just mean the incessant rain that made the Celtic Park surface extra skiddy. When the Romanian champions came to town in mid August, a flat start from Celtic made life very comfortable for the visitors. Not the case at all this time around.

As the heavens opened, Celtic poured forward straight away, threatening to flood their opponents in a deluge of chances. Twice they could have scored earlier via the towering figure of defender Christopher Jullien but the Frenchman's first header was well saved and the second was wayward, sailing over the bar. James Forrest was played in but his delivery across goal had no takers.

There is no VAR in the Europa League but the officials were still quick to cut Boli's celebrations short by a flag for offside. The correct call, TV replays would later show. Try telling that to the Cluj players, who howled their protests at the German referee Daniel Siebert.

What Celtic craved was a second goal to turn their dominance into a more tangible advantage. Forrest almost provided it just after half-time but shot wide. But just when Cluj thought they had weathered the storm, Elyounoussi picked the right night to score his first goal for Celtic. On loan from Southampton, he started and finished a flowing move, albeit his shot spun past the keeper on the greasy surface after taking a huge deflection off a defender.

At the other end, they needed Fraser Forster to stay alert, and he did, tipping Billel Omrani's dangerous shot across his goal away from danger. Up the other end Celtic sprinted with Forrest skipping through the raindrops to bring another tidy save from the Cluj keeper.

Celtic's fans could have enjoyed their night even more. Ryan Christie was a whisker away from touching in a fine Elyounoussi cross while Edourd fired just over in the last few minutes as he sought a second, and a third for his team.

What a difference a few weeks make. Down and out of the Champions League after scoring three times against Cluj but conceding one more, this looks and feels like a different Celtic. Their aim is European football in the New Year. Two matches into the group, they've made promising progress down that road already.
Man of the match – Boli Bolingoli

There were several contenders in a Celtic shirt. Edouard was excellent up front, ably assisted by wide men Forrest and Elyounoussi. Brown, Christie and Callum McGregor rarely put a foot wrong in midfield. But I'm going further back in the team for my man of the match.

Last time Cluj were in town, Bolingoli was dropped after a very shaky start to his Celtic career and midfielder McGregor took his place against the Romanians. How he's grown into life in Scotland since. His pace down the left side caused Cluj problems all night and he provided a fine assist for the first goal.

His performance wasn't a total bed of roses, though. He still has a mistake in him and made a few here. But for his energy, enthusiasm, and willingness to work – added to the undoubted quality he possesses in the opponent's half – I'll give the Belgian full-back the man of the match award.

Celtic Football Club statement

By: Newsroom Staff on 09 Oct, 2019 14:37

http://www.celticfc.net/news/16921

FOLLOWING the latest UEFA charge against the Club for the use of fireworks at Celtic Park, it is with real disappointment and frustration that the Club needs to appeal again for this behaviour to stop.
UEFA’s stance on the issue of pyrotechnics is unequivocal and very well-known.
The Club has been sanctioned on numerous occasions and yet, very disappointingly, this behaviour by a small minority persists.
The serious safety concerns associated with such behaviour are obvious, as is the reputational damage which this behaviour and these charges have on the Club. In addition, the numerous financial penalties placed on Celtic continue to come out the pockets of supporters who invest in the Club.
Celtic will be introducing further measures in order to deal with this behaviour. It has to stop.
The club does not want it, our supporters do not want it and UEFA will continue to punish the Club whenever it occurs as it is a clear breach of their regulations. It really is as simple as that.
Given the number of repeated offences, we should also be very aware that there could be further, very serious repercussions which could have hugely detrimental consequences for the Club and our supporters. It is hugely unfair that the enjoyment of Celtic matches could potentially be affected by the negative behaviour of a tiny minority.
Additionally, in the interests of all our supporters’ safety, it is imperative that all fans when attending matches at Celtic Park use their designated seat. This is important in ensuring a safe environment.
Our supporters are fantastic and we greatly value the huge contribution you make to the Club. It is the positive support of our fans which makes the difference, week in, week out.
Our win against CFR Cluj last Thursday represented another great European night on the pitch for the Club. Supported brilliantly by our fans, the team were magnificent in driving us to top of our Europa League group. This should be our focus.
Neil Lennon, our players and our backroom team will be doing all they can to deliver a similar performance against Lazio.
The Club and our supporters need to work together to make sure pyrotechnics and any other form of unsafe behaviour have no place at our matches.
