Trivia

  • Scottish Cup Fifth Round
  • Game kicked off at 2.01pm. The reason for this was a campaign for mental health awareness, one minute delay ask to ask for all to take a minute to think about and talk about it with others. Interesting novelty, but an interesting way to get attention.
  • Break from the arduous league campaign
  • Easy enough, build up was filled up repeatedly of Celtic's defeat to Clyde in Scottish Cup years ago under Strachan. Nobody was bothered at Celtic. It was just boring.
  • Weather was a disaster, Storm Ciara causing havoc, and it was a windy stormy day. Various matches were called off across the UK & Ireland.
  • Celtic coach John kennedy says Klimala needs more time to settle in as striker misses opportunity to open his goal account The Polish under-21 international striker made his first start for Celtic in their 3-0 Scottish Cup fifth-round win over Clyde at Broadwood yesterday and missed a relatively simple chance to open his account for the club.
  • A number of reserves playing today to give players a rest.
  • Celtic to play next round v St Johnstone
  • Starting debut for some. Bayo subbed on, not verygood but got a goal. Klimala unlucky not to score.
  • Neil Lennon has revealed Celtic will welcome back Nir Bitton and Hatem Abd Elhamed to training this week following their recovery from injury, though Jeremie Frimpong will remain on the sidelines for the time being.
  • Sons of ex-Celtic team mates Peter Grant & Paul McStay were in the Clyde team.
  • Celtic release very strongly worded statement on Sky TV for their twisted translation of interview with Sevco’s Morelos on racism etc. Big one for the board, and respect to them for it.
  • Scott Brown insists fellow midfielder Olivier Ntcham is loving life at the club after previously wanting out of Celtic Park.
  • Griff: I thought about quitting Hoops Leigh Griffiths admits he thought about moving clubs to get his life and career back on track. Instead, simply moving house appears to have done the trick
  • Ex-Celt Tony Watt: Striker joins Motherwell as free agent until end of season. Comes just after Celtic had defeated M’well 4-0 at Fir Park. Good luck to him.
  • Ex-Celt Kenny Miller has retired from play. He played for Celtic, Rangers, Sevco and Partick Thistle, four different clubs based in Glasgow.
  • Lennon: SFA charges 'ridiculous' Neil Lennon rounded on the charges brought by the SFA on Celtic and Hamilton for “failing to act in an orderly fashion” during the Scottish champions’ 4-1 in Lanarkshire at the weekend. “I thought it was ridiculous,” said Lennon. “We’ll wait and see what happens but I didn’t think there was anything in it. The media didn’t even ask me about it so I’m hoping nothing comes of it."
  • James McClean has poked fun at Rangers on social media, saying that he stopped a prospective signing from joining "Sevco". The Irish winger joked he convinced one-time Rangers target Tyrese Campbell out of a move to Ibrox.
  • Callum McGregor is a serious candidate for the Celtic captaincy whenever Scott Brown steps down, according to Neil Lennon
  • Reports: Celtic are lining up a deal to bring Josh Murphy to the Scottish Premiership in the summer window after missing out on the attacker in January.

ReviewClyde 0 Celtic 3

(YorkieCelt of KDS)
Good solid professional performance in poor conditions.
It was good to see guys who have been out ,or on the fringes get some game time.
Bauer was decent,so was boli and Shved and Bayo looked lively enough when they came on.
Klimala was ok too,but looks as if he will need time.

Was good to see Moi back in action as he looks a quality player.

Regardless of whatever Storm Ciara was going to throw in the direction of Cumbernauld, lightning was never going to strike twice as far as Celtic were concerned.

Like the majority of their domestic cup ties over the past four seasons in a remarkable run of 33 straight victories, this was plain sailing for the Scottish champions as they eased their way into the Scottish Cup quarter-finals.

At the venue where Neil Lennon, Roy Keane & Co were on the wrong end of one of the tournament’s biggest shock results 14 years ago, first-half goals by the midfield pairing of Olivier Ntcham and Scott Brown put them in command against a committed but outclassed Clyde outfit who were simply never going to upset the odds this time.

Substitute Vakoun Bayo’s last-minute strike completed a routine win for Scottish football’s relentlessly dominant force who remain on course for a quadruple treble of domestic trophies.

Celtic manager Lennon felt able to give Callum McGregor and Odsonne Edouard the day off, neither player in the matchday squad, as he combined squad rotation with a team selection which nonetheless paid due respect to both the competition and their League 1 opposition.

The absence of top scorer Edouard brought a first starting appearance for January signing Patryk Klimala and there was a robust welcome for the Polish striker when he was flattened by Clyde central defender Scott Rumsby inside the opening two minutes.

The home side would predictably spend most of the afternoon on the back foot but they did manage to register the first attempt on goal when Mark Lamont’s shot was deflected wide of Scott Bain’s right-hand post.

But any prospect of Clyde’s current crop matching the feat of the class of 2006, some of whom were introduced to the crowd before kick-off, was soon subdued by a thoroughly professional display by the cup holders as they adapted to the challenging conditions.

The pressure began to build on Clyde when Ryan Christie’s brilliant pass sent James Forrest free down the right and the winger’s low ball across the six-yard box eluded everyone.

Celtic were able to find plenty of space down that right flank and full-back Moritz Bauer surged forward to create their next opening. Mohamed Elyounoussi, making his return from injury, got on the end of Bauer’s cutback but couldn’t connect cleanly enough to trouble Clyde goalkeeper David Mitchell who saved comfortably.

But Mitchell was beaten by a combination of the elements and Ntcham’s shooting power when Celtic made the breakthrough in the 16th minute. The French midfielder drifted infield from the left and his sweetly-struck right-foot effort from around 20 yards bent wickedly in the breeze beyond Mitchell’s left hand into the corner of the net.

The wind was less kind to Chris McStay, son of former Celtic captain Paul, at the other end of the pitch when the Clyde midfielder had a sight of goal but saw the ball hold up before he could make a true connection.

Klimala could blame no-one but himself when he missed a glorious opportunity to score his first Celtic goal in the 37th minute. A sublime touch by Forrest to bring a high ball under control, all the more admirable in the conditions, was followed by a precise through pass which sent Klimala clear in the penalty area.

Hearts v Rangers in quarter-finals as Celtic…

Although Mitchell did well to race off his line and make a blocking save, Klimala’s attempted finish lacked any sense of conviction.

But Celtic did double their lead three minutes later as skipper Brown, enjoying one of his more prolific seasons in front of goal, grabbed his fifth of the campaign. Clyde were flat-footed in their reaction to a Christie corner from the left, allowing Klimala to flick the ball on for Brown, holding off Barry Cuddihy’s challenge, to beat Mitchell from close range.

With their passage to the last eight effectively secure, Celtic were able to play well within themselves for most of the second half.

Ray Grant, the second son of a famous Celtic father in the Clyde ranks whose old man Peter had been in the unprecedented position of hoping his beloved former club lost, did well to block Elyounoussi’s header from a Bauer cross in the 53rd minute.

Former Scotland striker David Goodwillie saw precious little of the ball but Clyde’s leading marksman did well to create one of his side’s more dangerous moments, playing a neat exchange of passes with Grant before dragging a shot just wide of Bain’s right hand post.

Klimala, who had struggled to make any sustained impact on proceedings, was replaced by Bayo in the closing stages. The Ivory Coast striker was horribly wasteful with his first chance, slashing wide from close range after he was played in by Christie, but simply couldn’t miss the opportunity which allowed him to wrap up Celtic’s victory in the 90th minute.

Ukrainian winger Marian Shved, making only his third appearance for Celtic as a late substitute for Elyounoussi, sent Bauer free on the right and his low cutback was tapped in from close range by Bayo.

Scott Brown and Olivier Ntcham both scored as Celtic beat Clyde in the Scottish Cup

Celtic maintained their dreams of a fourth consecutive domestic treble as they strolled past League One Clyde and into the Scottish Cup last eight.

Neil Lennon's side also exacted revenge for a shock cup defeat at Broadwood Stadium back in 2006, with their 12th away win in a row.

Olivier Ntcham and Scott Brown gave Celtic a commanding half-time lead.

Vakoun Bayo added a third late on as the holders comfortably sealed their place in the quarter-finals.

The draw, which took place after the tie, gave Celtic a trip to St Johnstone in the last eight.

Reaction & how it happened

Celtic exorcise Broadwood memories

The Miracle at Broadwood of 2006 was never likely to be repeated and, despite the best efforts of a howling wind to disrupt the spectacle, Celtic produced a dominant, professional display without really hitting the heights they can.

Clyde started brightly in front of a packed crowd, with neither side threatening either goalkeeper in the initial stages. Gradually, Celtic began to stretch their hosts and the breakthrough arrived in style.

Ntcham, whose goalscoring threat, passing range and strength were evident throughout the first half, gathered on the angle of the box, cut back and fired a crisp shot across Clyde goalkeeper David Mitchell into the far corner. A goal of great technique on his 24th birthday, it gave Celtic the platform they sought.
Celtic captain Scott Brown

Ryan Christie fizzed one from distance narrowly wide before a sensational move released Patryk Klimala through on goal. He looked certain to score on his first start but Mitchell raced from his line to produce a magnificent save.

The crucial second arrived when Ntcham did well to force a corner. Klimala managed to flick it towards the front post where captain Brown outmuscled his opponent to poke home.

Celtic camped in Clyde's half for much of the second period without breaching the opposition too often. Christie did clip the bar in the dying stages before Moritz Bauer found space and squared for substitute Bayo who slotted home.

Credit to the hosts, they were far from embarrassed, put on a creditable show and almost nicked a late consolation through David Goodwillie, who perhaps ought to have squared for Ally Love to tap in.

The game meant much more to Clyde than what happened on the pitch and they were not overrun as Lennon's squad took another step closer to retaining the trophy.
'We more than matched them' – reaction
'Clyde competed against country's best' – manager Danny Lennon

Clyde manager Danny Lennon: "The simplicity in the way Celtic plays is very good, and I thought they had a very good disciplined performance. We more than matched them in the second-half, but quality is always going to come through."

Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy: "We felt comfortable, it was a controlled game – the boys were professional. We'd have liked to have scored more goals but Clyde defended well and stayed in a good shape."

Match ends, Clyde 0, Celtic 3.
