2020-12-03: AC Milan 4-2 Celtic, Europa League

Match Pictures | Matches: 20202021

Trivia

  • UEFA Cup / Europa League Group H – Game 5
  • Kick-off: 17:55pm
  • Celtic already out of Europe on past 4 matches results.
  • Celtic now 5 defeats in a row, incredibly in this match Celtic were 2-0 up and could have been more early on!
  • 12 in the past 3 EL matches. Took the lead in all 3 away EL matches. Twice by 2 goals. Collapsed like a house of cards in each.
  • Minor consolation as @Oedouard22  becomes the joint third top scorer in Celtic’s European history,  netting his 15th in the San siro tonight .
  • Ismaila Soro who, 36 games into his Celtic career, has finally cracked 30 minutes of first team action.
  • Laxalt plays against his parent club, and Soro makes a surprise appearance. Duffy not in the squad. Barkas underfire.
  • Celtic Chief Exec released notice about current situation, which is bland, and many are shocked as basically seems to not answer anything.

“We know that many Celtic supporters share very honest and real concerns and they are being heard by the Club. Every decision taken, both on and off the park, is with the Club’s best interests at heart.” Peter Lawwell https://www.celticfc.com/news/2020/december/Chief-Executive-We-now-need-strength-in-adversity/

  • If the Celtic players needed some morale boosting to turn things around, hardly a good way to go about it by the manager coming out publicly talking about bringing in new players which will be to replace them! This week is a management PR disaster for Celtic.
  • Celtic fans increasingly becoming vocal on their issues with the board, and calls for marked changes.  Celts for Change 2 is a cliché but it’s how some feel.
  • Former Celtic striker Scott McDonald believes Neil Lennon’s decision to castigate his players after failure to qualify for the Champions League was the start of him losing the dressing room.
  • New manager reports:
    • Reports: Neil Lennon has been granted a stay of execution by Celtic majority shareholder Dermot Desmond, who will allow the under-fire manager to take charge of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Milan at the San Siro. The business tycoon is said to be furious with the behaviour of a small number of Celtic fans after Sunday’s loss to Ross County and doesn’t want to bow to their demands.
    • Former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan has thrown his support behind Neil Lennon amid rumours linking him with a return to Celtic. He said: “Over the last few days he’s been shown he’s not walking alone, his friends have gathered behind him, the Celtic fans who understand what’s going on will make sure he knows that as well.”
    • Lots of names out there; Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane link dismissed by club; Strachan in the running and so on.
    • Eddie Howe would be “interested” in the Celtic job if it became available and he has the “pedigree” to take the role on, according to ex-England international Gabriel Agbonlahor.
    • Celebrity Celtic die-hard Rod Stewart believes no manager worth his salt with go near the manager’s job at Parkhead with “a bargepole”.
  • St Mirren say they will cooperate fully after it emerged Police Scotland are probing ‘financial irregularities’ at the club, including possible non-payment of tax and National Insurance.
  • Rugby: Scottish club sides continue to get tanked by their peers in Ireland. Could get worse as more SAF sides are planning to move from Super Rugby over to the Pro 14.
  • Covid:
    • UK to rollout vaccines, first in the world to do so.
    • Lockdown changes in England moving from national to local tier system.
    • On Wednesday 2 Dec, a total of about 10,000 fans will be allowed into six games in the English Football League (EFL). League Two side Carlisle will be the first. Fans to:     not to touch the ball if it comes near them; not to approach players for autographs and selfies before or after games; to wear face masks as they enter the stadium and go to their seats.

Summary

Chris Sutton:

“Europe has been an absolute embarrassment this season… we learnt nothing from tonight other than Celtic still can’t defend and the goalkeepers don’t make saves… buck stops with the manager but the players actually need to show some b***s…”

Gazzetta dello Sport on Celtic: “Celtic in a crisis of nerves and identity, overwhelmed by criticism, controversy and rumours that Lennon is one step away from exemption”.

JBC of TheCelticWiki:

The game was irrelevant. Celtic seemed to be on the verge of a big surprise, but against the inform side in Italy it was all inevitable that Milan would come back, but Celtic just collapsed.

MM on Twitter:

Our play when we have an opportunity is in general over elaborated.

Our defence is criminally soft & destroys any gains made up front.

Our midfield don’t control or influence the game to any extent where it makes a difference.

No confidence to hold a lead.

ItaliaBhoy on KDS:

Positive:

2 goals, decent effort from the players, a bit more verve and purpose in the attack and midfield.

Negatives:

Atrocious defending.

Rank game-management.

Suspicion Milan were bascally toying with us.

It’s not enough of a doing to force out NL, therefore will be spun by his mates as a gorious fightng performance.

Scott Ryan on twitter:

Lennon’s philosophy has always been to outscore the opposition. You can tell by the team shape they don’t know how to defend. 4–2 down @ 88 mins and they break with 4 against 2 as we’re chasing goals in a dead game. 1/2The big problem is that the goals are drying up. Both goals tonight came from Milan errors. We created very little from open play. Same against Ross County. Teams just sit in a low block and we literally don’t know what to do.

Samu Castillejo equalises for AC Milan at San Siro

Samu Castillejo equalises for AC Milan at San Siro

Celtic lost a two-goal lead at San Siro as AC Milan fought back to inflict the Scottish champions’ fourth Europa League defeat in five games.

Impressive finishes from Tom Rogic and Odsonne Edouard had struggling Celtic in control after 14 minutes following a vibrant start by Neil Lennon’s under-pressure side.

But by the 26th minute, Milan were level through Hakan Calhangolu’s free-kick and Samu Castillejo, before Jens Petter Hauge and Brahim Diaz put them into the last 32 with a game to spare.

Top seeds Celtic, who have just one point from five Group H matches, already knew they could not progress prior to kick-off, and have now won just twice in their last 11 games in all competitions.

Physicality let Celtic down – Lennon

    Podcast: Reaction to Celtic’s defeat

Thirteen months ago, Lennon’s side completed a double over a team fighting for the Serie A title – Lazio – to secure a last-32 spot with two games to spare.

The fact a narrow loss against a similar opponent is now considered an improvement shows the scale of their drop off since.

That night in Rome against Lazio could be considered the high point of Lennon’s second spell in charge, and what he was looking for at San Siro was for his players to show some sign that those heights are not only a thing of the past.

For 20 minutes, they did just that. Rogic’s opener was a gift as Rade Krunic’s heavy touch allowed the Australian to steal the ball on the edge of the box, but his control and low left-foot finish beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma was superb.

Edouard’s delicate lift over the Italian goalkeeper was just as impressive as he latched on to Ryan Christie’s pinpoint pass, and it was fully deserved as Callum McGregor and Rogic both went close just prior.

But the high-tempo start was destroyed by Celtic’s familiar Achilles heel – their defending.

Group H table

First, Christie needlessly hacked down Krunic on the edge of the box, which allowed Calhanoglu to curl into the net from the resulting free-kick. Goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas again failed to convince as he barely moved towards the area he was supposed to be covering.

And within two minutes Castillejo hauled Milan level as he finished from the middle of the box after Hauge’s cross wasn’t cleared by either Kristoffer Ajer or McGregor.

Lennon looked on in disbelief at his side’s sloppiness, but it is a continuing theme. Celtic had the joint-worst defensive record in this term’s Europa League before this game. They now stand alone in that regard having conceded 17 in five matches.

Hauge showed superb skill for Milan’s third as he weaved in from the left before finding the far corner, but again the defending, or lack of it, from Celtic was lamentable as at least four green shirts failed to put a challenge in.

Milan are flying high at the top of Serie A, and it was always going to be a tough ask, even at 2-0 up. And the positives for Celtic are that they created more chances than they might have expected.

At 3-2, Frimpong had an effort pushed wide by Donnarumma, while Christie also forced the Italy international into a fine stop with a well-struck free-kick.

But they ended in typical fashion, as Hauge again waltzed into the box and through a meek challenge by Hatem Elhamed before setting up Diaz to loft the ball into the far corner and seal victory.

Man of the match – Jens Petter Hauge

Hauge played off the left and was a constant threat with his elegant dribbling, scoring once and helping set up another two of Milan’s goals

Norwegian Hauge played off the left and was a constant threat with his elegant dribbling, scoring once and helping set up another two of Milan’s goals

What did we learn?

Lennon has consistently spoken about a lack of confidence being Celtic’s problem. But even with the perfect start they crumbled.

The defensive problems are about more than just belief. Team selection and formation has varied throughout the season, and here Frimpong played as a right winger, rather than full-back, presumably to relieve him of defensive duties.

He was a threat, especially, early in the game, but Hauge still found himself in acres of space on the left time and again, and he punished Celtic on three separate occasions with two assists and a goal.

Yes, Stefano Pioli’s side are flying in Serie A and a narrow defeat in isolation is not a terrible result. But, from the outside at least, changes in formation and personnel are having no discernible effect on Celtic’s defence. The Lazio win now seems like a lifetime ago.

Match stats

Milan have won their last five home matches against Celtic.

Celtic have won just two of their 25 away matches in the Europa League (D11 L12).

Since the start of 2013/14, only Lionel Messi (36) has scored more direct free-kicks among players in the top five European Leagues than Calhanoglu (18).

Edouard has been involved in seven goals in eight Europa League starts (5 goals, 2 assists).

Rogic netted his first Europa League goal in his 16th appearance in the competition.

There were just 121 seconds between Milan’s first two goals.

Chief Executive: We now need strength in adversity

https://www.celticfc.com/news/2020/december/Chief-Executive-We-now-need-strength-in-adversity/

By Celtic Football Club

1 Dec 2020

While the Club has faced a difficult period on the pitch, Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell has reiterated the Club’s determination to succeed this season and move forward together.

Peter Lawwell said: “Like all those with Celtic’s best interests at heart, everyone at the Club is feeling the same hurt, disappointment and frustration following the team’s recent results. We are accustomed to winning and, of course, our objective will always be for that to continue. There is no complacency whatsoever.

“Neil, the players and backroom staff, who have already done so much for the Club, share in all of that. They have never been more determined to succeed. Having enjoyed such sustained, unprecedented success, we now need strength in adversity.

“We know that many Celtic supporters share very honest and real concerns and they are being heard by the Club. Every decision taken, both on and off the park, is with the Club’s best interests at heart. This is not about any individual, but about Celtic Football Club as a collective.

“Together we have faced unique difficulties in the early part of the season. While some of these were beyond our control, of course we recognise we must improve. There is a long way to go and everyone at the Club is ready for the challenge.

“Later this month, Celtic will attempt what no other club in the world has achieved – a quadruple treble in domestic competitions. We can best prepare for that and for our other remaining competitions this season by moving forward together, with the sole aim of achieving continued success for the Club.”

“We showed we are a good team” – Neil Lennon takes heart from Celtic’s showing at AC Milan

Neil Lennon refused to be bowed by the concession of another four goals in believing that his Celtic team showed many aspects of their better selves in the 4-2 defeat by AC Milan in the San Siro.

The unremitting pressure on the Irishman won’t be relieved by another loss that leaves him presiding over an 11-game sequence in which there have been only two wins. But the Celtic manager considers his players did produce the right reaction to the League Cup loss at home to Ross County on Sunday that led to all hell breaking loose.

“We looked a good team,” Lennon said. “The body language was good, the attitude was good – coming off the back of a bad result at the weekend. I think the scoreline doesn’t do us justice but we have to take the positives. I’ve got to be happy with a large parts.

“[Odsonne] Edouard looked more like himself, [Jeremie] Frimpong I thought was outstanding, I thought [Scott] Brown had a great game as well. We scored two really good goals and had really good chances.”

Celtic squandered a two-goal lead earned in the first quarter of an hour with two goals given up across a three minute spell of the first period before the defensive fragilities reared up in the two goals conceded in the second half – keeper Vasilis Barkas and Hatem Abd Elhamed among the culprits for Mlans first and fourth goals as the Serie A leaders were able to come out on top.

‘We’d a chance to go three up when [Gianluigi] Donnarumma made a great save from Callum [McGregor],” he said. “We were rampant at that stage. It’s a bit of quality at the first goal and a bit of naivety at their second. It’s our free kick, it’s 2-1, we just need to settle and we take it quickly. But it shows the players are in a positive mindset. The third and fourth goals from our point of view are poor.

“Even at 3-2 I thought we were always in it Donnarumma made a great save from [Ryan] Christie from the free-kick and we looked a threat all night. We’ve let ourselves down, not being physical enough in the tackle at times. It’s not as if we were cut open. We’d plenty of players back to deal with it but we don’t.

“It’s how the tie was lost really. There wasn’t much between the teams. I thought actually that we had probably more shots at goals and worked the goalkeeper more than they did to us. We’ll analyse it again when we get home. But at 2-2 at half time the game is pretty even when we’ve been in the ascendancy. So we’ve let ourselves down in that aspect by not coming in with our tails up at half time.

“I thought we’d better chances at 3-2. I’ve got to take the positives from that – from the way we played, the way we passed the ball, the way we created chances. I thought the two centre-halves, despite us conceding four goals, played reasonably well. Our final ball in the second half just let us down a little bit when we worked it into really good areas.”

Neil Lennon singles out which Celtic player he thought was “outstanding” in loss to AC Milan

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has praised teenager Jeremie Frimpong for an “outstanding” performance in his side’s 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in the Europa League.

However, the under-fire Celtic boss refused to be drawn into criticising his goalkeeper after another subpar showing from Vasilis Barkas.

The Scottish champions travelled to the Serie A leaders a beleaguered squad having lost their dominance over Scottish football’s major honours with Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Ross County in the Betfred Cup.

With pressure mounting on Neil Lennon they needed a big performance against Milan and it looked for a while that’s exactly what would happen.

Goals from Tom Rogic and Odsonne Edouard had the visitors 2-0 up inside 14 minutes. But a free-kick from Hakan Calhanoglu and a quick second from Samu Castillejo soon tied up the scores.

Jens Petter Hauge put the hosts in front shortly after the restart before Brahim Diaz made sure of things later in the game, ensuring Celtic stay bottom of the group on one point, having already been eliminated following last week’s 4-1 defeat in Prague.

Despite it being another defeat, Lennon was positive in his reaction after the match. He also picked out a couple of individuals for praise.

He said: “We looked a good team tonight. Body language was good; attitude was good. We’ve got to look at the positives. I thought we looked good for a large part of the game. I don’t think I’ve ever been involved in a team that has gone 2-0 up at the San Siro.

“Edouard looked more like himself, Frimpong was outstanding. I thought [Scott] Brown had a good game as well.”

Further questions have been asked of Celtic’s goalkeeping situation after Barkas was found wanting for Calhanoglu’s free-kick. The Greek international gambled on the shot going over the wall, only to see it fly into the net in the area where he was supposed to cover.

The summer signing only recently returned to the side for Sunday’s match with County and Lennon refused to point the finger of blame in his direction.

He responded when asked about Barkas: “I’m not going to single out individuals. We’ll analyse it as a group and take it from there.”
