Summary

“The only bright spot from the Celtic farrago, is that the bulk of their fans appear to be keenly aware and aggrieved at the monumental arse their club have made of things. Brother Walfrid would be spinning.”

Journo Jim Spence on twitter

“There’s a sense of pride among the younger players but there’s also a massive sense of frustration that we couldn’t see it out. That’s drilled into these players at this club – that it’s about winning and we always want good performances. We fell short at the last hurdle tonight.

League is already over, and this is another stab in the heart with a ‘reserve’ Celtic squad just missing out on the three pts due to a characteristic lost goal at the death to Hibs. Turnbull scored a cracking free-kick goal which should have settled it all. The performance for a makeshift side was better than some naysayers will admit, but morale across the support and club is so low, it’s hard to get excited with little to be motivated about.

The defence is a shambles, and Duffy again taking the flak from all corners, but it was Laxalt that gave away a needless free-kick that led to the goal. At least Gavin Strachan admitted that  “Losing goals from set-pieces has been a feature of the season”.

Fine debuts by Harper & Okoflex, with others like Dembele getting a run too.

Soro was very good, and made a difference, but he seems often to be the only one who has something to play for.

Some positives tonight. A couple of fine debuts. Along with that, Turnbull and Soro are excellent and progressing. Laxalt is a bit of an enigma, and I don’t think he’ll be worth his quoted price tag.

Respect also to Gavin Strachan who under difficult unwanted circumstances managed Celtic tonight (and for next game) and did a lot of good talking & promoting on the sidelines for the players. Unfortunate not to get the debut (acting) managerial win he deserved.

Hibs deserved their draw tonight. Congrats.

Gavin Strachan: We’re disappointed we couldn’t see out game

By Joe Donnelly, Celtic View Reporter

https://www.celticfc.com/news/2021/january/Gavin-Strachan-We-re-disappointed-we-couldn-t-see-out-game/

Gavin Strachan led the Hoops from the dugout against Hibernian this evening (Monday) in the absence of Neil Lennon and John Kennedy, both of whom are self-isolating following Christopher Jullien’s positive test for COVID-19. The first team coach described the 1-1 draw as a decent game, but was ultimately disappointed his players couldn’t see out the match to claim three points.

Speaking to Celtic TV, he said: “It was a decent game and the lads put a lot into it against a very good team. It looked like we’d maybe done enough to nick it but it wasn’t to be. We’re a bit disappointed in the manner of the goal and that we couldn’t see out the game.

“Losing goals from set-pieces has been a feature of the season, but in the last bit of the game, we’d still expect to do better. We were massively outdone physically at that stage in the game, it was a bit of a concern when the free-kick was given, but we were hoping that we could just see the game out.”

The first team coach said the young players who stepped into tonight’s side could be proud of their performance, but admitted the overarching feeling is one of frustration.

He added: “There’s a sense of pride among the younger players but there’s also a massive sense of frustration that we couldn’t see it out. That’s drilled into these players at this club – that it’s about winning and we always want good performances. We fell short at the last hurdle tonight.

“We’ve all got to stand up and be counted at this tough time for the club. We’ve seen signs that it’s there, but we’ve just got to dust ourselves down and go again on Saturday and try and get a win.”

The last rites for Celtic title challenge not down to Covid-19 personnel problems against Hibs

It hardly really matters, in truth, that a Celtic laid low by self-inflicted Covid-19 circumstances were further laid low in the title race by the loss of a late Kevin Nisbet equaliser against Hibs.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/last-rites-celtic-title-challenge-not-down-covid-19-personnel-problems-against-hibs-3092763

The 91st minute smashed-in effort, which in keeping with the Scottish champions’ season of course proved the product of scatty failure to deal with a corner, might have condemned them to a 1-1 draw. An outcome that now leaves them trailing Rangers by a monstrous 21 points.

Yet, even if an exquisitely flighted, curling free-kick from David Turnbull in the 81st minute had allowed them to escape with a victory from the most challenging circumstances, the fact is that the damage to Celtic’s 10-in-a-row aspirations didn’t need the latest grim events to be fatal.

Perhaps the best summation of this Celtic campaign of both seemingly never-ending calamity and crushing consequences over poor choices was provided by a supporters’ tweet. The way the season is going, it said, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Celtic announced Hoopy the Huddlehound had passed away.

The slow and painful death to the club’s record 10 attempt always seemed that it would be given the last rites against Hibs when it emerged all four senior strikers – Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths, Albian Ajeti and Patryk Klimala – and attackers Ryan Christie and Mohamed Elyounoussi featuring among the 13 players forced to isolate following Christopher Jullien’s positive Covid-19 test following the club’s horribly ill-judged winter training camp in Dubai. It just didn’t pan out perhaps as anticipated.

The fall-out from that excursion will continue to be nuclear for weeks to come, no doubt. But the more immediate singeing came with the bluntness they exhibited against an Easter Road side that had shipped in five goals across desperate defeats to Ross County and Livingston in their previous two outings.

It would be harsh to home in on 19-year-old forward Cameron Harper, handed a debut in invidious circumstances, but it really didn’t happen for the American across his hour on the pitch. He had one goal attempt early on from an impossible angle when a cut-back was demanded, but made the visitors’ backline look impenetrable. It was a similar story for his frontline partner, of sorts, Mikey Johnston. In his first start in a year, Celtic were left playing in front of Hibs for so long.

It was an admirable effort from the makeshift home side to grow into an encounter in which Turnbull was once again a standout. And for all that it was yet another cross ball that undid them, Celtic keeper Conor Hazard had produced a series of saves before then to put him in credit for the confrontation. But, whatever the age and profile of the Celtic players who take to the pitch for the club in this season horriblus, it just seems domestic adversity invariably gives way to inadequacy.

Celtic: Hazard; Frimpong, Welsh, Duffy, Laxalt; Soro; Turnbull, Rogic (Henderson 67), McGregor; Johnston (Dembele 79), Harper (Oxoflex 60). Subs: Doohan, Taylor, Connell, Coffey, Ralston, Hjelde, Karamoko

Hibs: Macey; P McGinn, Porteous, Hanlon, Doig (Stevenson 46); Gogic; Wright (Doidge 52), Newell (Mallan 68), Hallberg, Murphy; Nisbet. Subs: Dabrowski, Gray, McGregor, S. McGinn, Bradley, Gullan.

Highlights: Celtic 1-1 Hibernian

Depleted Celtic ended a day of intense scrutiny with a draw against Hibernian that leaves the defending champions 21 points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers.

Celtic, missing 13 isolating players and boss Neil Lennon after a positive Covid-19 test, moved into the lead through David Turnbull’s free-kick.

But Kevin Nisbet struck in stoppage time to level for Hibs and take them to within a point of third-place Aberdeen.

Celtic still have three games in hand.

Sturgeon urges football not to ‘abuse privileges’

The preamble to the match had been dominated initially by controversy over Celtic’s winter training camp in Dubai last week, with Nicola Sturgeon questioning the trip.

Then, after news of Christopher Jullien’s positive coronavirus test on Monday morning, the first minister warned Scottish football not to “abuse” its privileges during lockdown as criticism of Celtic grew throughout the day.

Those considered close contacts of the injured French defender missed the game, as did Lennon and assistant boss John Kennedy, leaving coach Gavin Strachan – son of former Celtic boss Gordon – to oversee the team.

The unfamiliar line-up showed six changes, though one of those was enforced by Nir Bitton’s suspension, and teenage American forward Cameron Harper was handed a debut.

Hibs’ request for Celtic players to be retested pre-match was turned down and Jack Ross made five changes to his side, including giving a first appearance to on-loan Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Macey.

And it was the visitors who tried to stamp their authority on the game early on with Nisbet heading over and later testing Conor Hazard with a shot after Joe Newell’s strike had been pushed out by the Celtic stopper.

Harper shot instead of passing from a promising position in Celtic’s first incisive move and long-range efforts from Ismaila Soro and Laxalt drew fine saves from Macey.

Turnbull’s superb chip found Callum McGregor in behind the Hibs defence but he could not make the right connection.

Lewis Stevenson made his 500th Hibernian appearance as a half-time replacement for Josh Doig and Harper limped off to be replaced by another Celtic debutant Armstrong Oko-Flex on the hour.

Chances were at a premium and Hazard was quick off his line to snuff out a chance for Hallberg and Drey Wright’s replacement Christian Doidge could not get a header on Jamie Murphy’s teasing corner.

Mikey Johnston claimed unsuccessfully for a penalty after going down in the Hibs box following Ryan Porteous’ challenge and soon made way for Karamoko Dembele.

Hibs also made a change with Stephen McGinn replacing Hallberg and the midfielder fouled Turnbull to give the Celtic midfielder the chance to put Celtic ahead, and he did. It was a fantastic strike by Turnbull and his fifth goal for Celtic.

Hibs went back on the attack and won a free-kick of their own after Laxalt’s foul on Paul McGinn and the latter’s header from Stevie Mallan’s delivery was cleared on the line only for Nisbet to fire high into the net for parity.

Man of the match – Conor Hazard

Hazard did not cover himself in glory at the Hibs goal but his saves throughout kept Celtic in the game

What did we learn?

Unsurprisingly, Celtic took a while to settle into the match and lacked a focal point in the absence of Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard.

For long spells in the second half, the hosts did not look likely to win but took their chance when it came. Defensively, though, they were caught out badly at a set play.

Hibs may rue not throwing more caution to the wind at 0-0 but, after three league defeats, a point in Glasgow is a positive result.

What did they say?

We thought we’d done enough – Celtic’s Strachan

Celtic coach Gavin Strachan: “The players put a lot into the game and we thought we did enough to nick it. The sucker punch at the end was frustrating. We were hoping we would have enough bodies back to see that out.

“There’s a lot of football still to be played and you never know what’s going to happen. Obviously it’s a frustrating time just now but we need to get the win on Saturday, keep racking up the points and see what happens.”

Hibernian head coach Jack Ross: “We wanted to come and win the game. I certainly think we merited taking something from it. It’s good for us to stop the bleeding. It hopefully just propels our side in the right direction again.

“Kevin Nisbet’s goalscoring return has been excellent. The accuracy of the finish and the trust in his finishing ability with the goal has to be like that otherwise I don’t think he scores it.”

Celtic confirm Neil Lennon and 13 players to self-isolate after Christopher Jullien tests positive for Covid-19 on return from Dubai

Celtic will be without at least 13 players plus three members of staff for tonight’s match against Hibs after a large section of the first-team squad were ordered into self-isolation.

The instruction from health authorities comes after one Celtic player, now confirmed as defender Christopher Jullien, tested positive for coronavirus following the club’s return from a mid-season training camp in Dubai on Friday.

Head coach Neil Lennon and assistant John Kennedy have also been deemed close contacts and will miss the Hibs clash this evening, which will now likely feature a Celtic side made up mostly of reserve players.

Celtic: Get the latest team news, match previews and reports

A club statement read: “Celtic Football Club confirmed today that Christopher Jullien has tested positive for Covid-19 and is self-isolating at home. We wish Christopher a speedy recovery.

“While all of the other members of the squad and backroom team have tested negative, we have been informed by the authorities that, having been deemed ‘close contacts’, Celtic manager Neil Lennon, assistant John Kennedy and 13 first-team players will be required to self-isolate on a precautionary basis as required by the current regulations.

“The Club would like to thank the Scottish FA, JRG and the Scottish Government for their assistance in managing this case. Celtic will, of course, fulfill its fixture against Hibernian this evening.

“Clearly we are hugely disappointed, as we know our supporters will be. The contacts were identified during the period from Wednesday last week, primarily around flight and team coach travel, during which time Celtic applied the same rigorous protocols used for pre-season training camps, UEFA match travel and for all domestic match arrangements in Scotland.

“These protocols have served us well in the past, as the Club has not had one positive case in our own ‘bubble’ until now. As we have already stated, Celtic’s decision to travel to Dubai for a training camp was for performance reasons. Whilst we were in Dubai, the announcements made on January 4 significantly changed the COVID landscape.

“The reality is that a case could well have occurred had the team remained in Scotland, as other cases have done in Scottish football and across UK sport in the past week.

“Celtic has done everything it can to ensure we have in place the very best procedures and protocols. From the outset of the pandemic, Celtic has worked closely with the Scottish Government and Scottish football and we will continue to do so.”

CELTIC…

(Turnbull 81)

HIBERNIAN…

(Nisbet 90)

Celtic were held to a 1-1 draw against Hibernian as a late Kevin Nisbet goal cancelled out a superb David Turnbull free-kick which had given the Hoops the lead with nine minutes of the match remaining.

It was the visitors who started the match on the front foot, with Kevin Nisbet heading on to the roof of the net from a corner after just two minutes. Conor Hazard in the Celtic goal was called upon just three minutes later to deny Joe Newell with an effort from the edge of the area.

And the Celtic keeper was again alert to deny Nisbet in the ninth minute after the Hibs striker managed to fashion a shot inside the area.

At the other end, Mikey Johnston created Celtic’s first real chance, setting up David Turnbull, but his shot from 20 yards was pushed away by Hibs keeper, Matt Macey.

Cameron Harper, leading the line for the Hoops, hit the side-netting in the 25th minute after latching on to a pass from Johnston, while Tom Rogic had an effort on target that was comfortably saved by the keeper.

As the game headed towards half-time, Celtic pushed forward in search of the opening goal, and on 41 minutes Ismaila Soro had an effort from 25 yards out that was pushed over the bar. Three minutes later, Diego Laxalt was next to have a go, but, again, his shot was pushed away from the keeper.

It took a while for either side to create any clear-cut opportunities in the second half, and it was the visitors who carved out the first opening just after the hour mark, but Hazard was again on hand to deny Hallberg what would have been the opener.

Mikey Johnston was continuing to cause problems whenever he got on the ball, and on 71 minutes, he managed to get a shot away from just outside the area, but it was well held by Macey.

And on 81 minutes, Celtic grabbed the opener. Turnbull was brought down on the edge of the box, and he took the set-piece himself, curling the ball over the Hibs wall and into the back of the net.

Jack Ross’ side drove forward in search of an equaliser, and Hazard pushed away a Jamie Murphy effort before Stephen Mallan shot just over.

And as the game entered four minutes of added time, Hibs managed to get the ball in the net. A free-kick into the box was headed back across the six-yard box, and Nisbet was on hand to fire home the equaliser.
