Summary

Forrest: “On a personal level I’m absolutely delighted. It’s been a long few months.”

So good to see James Forrest back in the side, he has been missed this season. We live in a time of change at Celtic but some optimistim for the season ahead, there are good players at the club and a good manager will add to that and get us moving again.

Elynoussi scored a great third to cap off the match and Christie scored the second goal. However, Christie was frustrating everyone and squandered so many long range shots, so much so that the Falkirk Twitter feed made a sarcastic joke on it (all in humour). Celtic were wasteful in front of goal and despite the scoreline could, have been so much better. The Falkirk goalkeeper deserves credit actually, he was very good, and the Falkirk tactics mostly worked.

Decent game with a couple of nice goals. having at least 3 players who just want to shoot all the time isn’t ideal though a more composure would have seen us comfortably ahead by half time. Good tempo and didn’t do anything daft at the back. Job done.

Thought we played with a tempo we’ve not often seen in these type of games.

Got a fairly standard way of playing in these games. Quick restarts. Get plenty of shots in. Reminded me of the Airdrie game from a couple of seasons ago when Weah made his debut. Much better than recent times though and hopefully continues against better teams

Dermot Desmond interview

https://www.celticfc.com/news/2021/march/Dermot-Desmond-interview/

By Celtic Football Club

March 2021

Celtic’s principal shareholder, Dermot Desmond, today responded to a number of questions and issues raised by supporters in an exclusive interview with the official Celtic website.

When can we expect the appointment of a manager?

As with any key appointment at Celtic, there is a process which involves research, investigation, interviewing and negotiation. This process is underway and is taking place privately and when complete, the Board will make a public announcement.

Who is in charge of the process?

The Chairman Ian Bankier, Peter Lawwell and myself take a lead in the process, and naturally, the incoming CEO will also participate. Any decision made will require Board approval.

Could you give us some idea of the type of candidate you are looking for?

We are mindful of the fact that there is a huge amount of interest and speculation among our supporters and the press. However, we have to respect the privacy of potential candidates and the integrity of the process, and so I think it would be inappropriate to make comment on the type of candidate we are looking for.

What is your analysis of the season?

Firstly, the season is not over yet, as we are still in the Scottish Cup. However, my current thoughts are that this season has been extremely disappointing. Decision-making in football is not an exact science and I accept without qualification that we have made some wrong calls. We will endeavour to learn from those. However, the conjecture coming from some journalists, commentators and pundits that they foresaw the outcome of this season is entirely disingenuous in my opinion.

Regardless of whether we won the league or not this year, we knew that the 2021/22 season would be a transitional year for the team. A number of the existing squad would more than likely be departing or returning to their parent clubs, but we felt that, in order to give the team the best chance of success this year to achieve the overriding ambition, we should endeavour to retain these players, despite receiving a number of substantial bids. In so doing, we recognised that this would add to the recruitment requirements for the subsequent season. We recognise that we have under-performed both on and off the pitch and must do better.

It has been reported that you should sell your shares in Celtic as you are not a true fan?

This is a contemptible suggestion. I am as passionate about Celtic as any other supporter. My shares are not for sale. Brian Dempsey, in an article in The Times, is reported to be floating the idea that fans should own the Club and that we have reverted back to where we were in 1994. When I think about the strength of this Club today and the playing success that we have enjoyed to date, these are entirely attributable to being financially strong and being professionally managed under stable ownership. When I look back at the record of the Club since 2001, we have achieved remarkable success and encountered only a few set-backs along the way. This season has been one of them, but it does not re-create the conditions of the early 1990s, as Mr Dempsey would like to have us believe.

It is said that the Board is not fit for purpose. How do you react to that criticism?

One of Fergus McCann’s tenets was that the Club would be run professionally and that we should never return to the position he inherited where the entire existence of Celtic could be jeopardised by mis-management and unacceptable levels of indebtedness. Celtic is and will continue to be run on a meritocratic basis by the best executives available at the time. There is no member of the Celtic Board that I personally knew before they were appointed. We have maintained this policy and it has endured the test of time. In a professional manner we conduct our business behind closed doors, we don’t seek public acclaim for everything we do. Critics are in no position to judge what they cannot see.

We are very fortunate to have Ian Bankier as our Chairman and he leads a diverse and extremely talented Board. We could not have had a better CEO, nor a more committed Celtic supporter than Peter Lawwell. He has built a solid platform upon which our new CEO, Dominic McKay, can build. With every Board appointment we make, we undertake a thorough recruitment process of researching, investigating, interviewing and negotiating, unknown to all except the Celtic Board members. That will be the same process that is being implemented in recruiting our next manager.

What are your hopes for next season?

That we recruit a manager that plays football the way that all Celtic supporters want and that we give that manager the time to implement their own plans. After that, I am sure much more success will follow.

Eddie Howe given food for thought by Celtic’s performance against Falkirk

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/eddie-howe-given-food-for-thought-by-celtics-performance-against-falkirk-3188827

If Eddie Howe was tuning in on Premier Sports last night, for all Celtic’s struggles for 50 minutes to make the breakthrough in a Scottish Cup tie they eventually closed out 3-0 against Falkirk, he wouldn’t exactly have been left reconsidering whether to take up the Parkhead club’s contract offer he appears ready to ink.

James Forrest, centre, was on target for Celtic against Falkirk.

James Forrest, centre, was on target for Celtic against Falkirk.

The 43-year-old Englishman would, though, have realised the reconditioning of the squad he will require to undertake on pitching up in Glasgow. As much in mind as make-up.

Jock Stein once said 11 dustbins, if set up in a certain fashion, could prove problematic to breakdown. Across the four-game period in charge for Celtic interim manager John Kennedy, his players seem to have gone out of their way to prove the wisdom of that adage for long passages.

Celtic: Get the latest team news, match previews and reports

That is not to demean the endeavours of Falkirk, who were disciplined and determined until they caved by conceding two goals inside three minutes just before the hour. The returning James Forrest, in his first start for six months, demonstrated his incalculable value to his team by providing the first. The winger also illustrated how much he has been missed in the club’s bedevilled season since he sustained an ankle fracture in late September beyond his strike.

Energised and inventive throughout his 74 minutes on the pitch, when he dropped his shoulder and cut inside from the right in the familiar fashion of so many campaigns after 56 minutes, he was rewarded for letting fly with the ball grazing Kyle McLelland to elude the outstretched hand of keeper Robbie Mutch.

It was a goal that Celtic desperately needed to prevent the encounter settling into the pattern of so many that have cost them enormously in a season … wherein they have developed the footballing equivalent of golf’s yips or even dartitis suffered by those svelte athletes on the oche. Even with three goals in the tie that was still a problem considering they had 43 goal attempts, and 11 shots on target.

These statistics were hardly surprising when Celtic were up against a third tier club that essentially seemed willing to sacrifice progress in the competition. This impression came by dint of the fact that joint managers Lee Miller and Scottish Cup tie rested half of their senior side because of the punishing schedule in their League One promotion push the pandemic has condensed into a month of games practically every three days.

It should have made Celtic’s first game in defence of a trophy they have captured for a record four straight seasons a breeze; a comfortable way with which to resume following the international break. That was true even if the rigours of that period led to Kennedy starting with Odsonne Edouard, Callum McGregor and Mohamed Elyounoussi on the bench.

Those calls meant a first start for Leigh Griffiths under Kennedy, although the once-lethal striker never really did start in an excruciating 62 minutes from him. Questions about what sort of future he will have in the high-tempo, aggressive approach that are Howe patents after he proved so out of sorts.

His timing was as reliable as chocolate watch as Celtic attacked in wave upon wave, only to squander glaring openings again and again. So often that proved the result of a ball being played across the box to Griffiths and him swiping to scuff efforts in mortifying fashion.

Ryan Christie also had his moments of miss, as did Celtic right across the personnel middle to third, but he made amends when he sealing the club’s place in the last 16 of the competition with an inch-perfct low drive from the right-hand edge of the box that squeezed in at the far post in the 58th minute.

In Scott Brown being inexplicably retained despite being on his farewell tour through having agreed to join Aberdeen next season, Celtic’s line-up against Falkirk might have had no great relevance of how it will look if Howe is in place come the start of next season. Aside from doubts about Griffiths’ future, it is unlikely that Kristoffer Ajer and Christie – approaching the final 12 months of their deals – will remain, while Diego Laxalt, Jonjoe Kenny and late substitute Mohamed Elyounoussi’s loan deals from AC Milan, Everton and Southampton, respectively, are up in the summer. Elyounoussi would be a permanent signing worth making by Howe if the opportunity exists for a deal in the region of £5million to be struck, as he showed by bagging goal number 16 of the season in the 79th minute. A smart loft over the advancing Falkirk keeper after being sent through by Kenny, it was a goal crafted with the sort of ease that had proved beyond his team-mates all-too-often.

Ultimately, Celtic did what they had to do without ever looking like they might gift a goal on the very rare occasions Falkirk were in their half. A result of them affording their visitors under 20 per cent of possession. And, in fairness to Kennedy, it has gone overlooked that his Celtic have yet to be breached from open play in the four games he has led them. There may be some elements on which Howe can build.

Celtic: Bain, Kenny, Ajer, Welsh, Laxalt, Brown, Turnbull, Christie, Rogic (Soro 72), Forrest (Elyounoussi 74), Griffiths (Ajeti 62). Subs: Barkas, Taylor, Duffy, Soro, Edouard, McGregor, Ralston.

Falkirk: Mutch, Mercer, Neilson, Deveney, McClelland, G Miller Leitch (Alston 64), Fotheringham (Telfer 64), Dowds (Keena 51), Francis, Sammon. Subs: Cantley, Dixon, Hall, Gomis, Laverty, L Miller.

Highlights: Celtic 3-0 Falkirk

James Forrest scored on his first Celtic start since September as the Scottish Cup holders overcame Falkirk’s stubborn resistance in the third round.

The winger found the net with the aid of a deflection after the League 1 leaders had kept their hosts at bay for 55 minutes.

Ryan Christie’s low strike quickly doubled the lead.

And substitute Mohamed Elyounoussi’s deft chip gave Celtic a scoreline that better reflected their dominance.

With Eddie Howe in advanced talks to become Celtic’s new manager, victory maintains their hopes of a record-extending fifth successive Scottish Cup.

    Reaction & as it happened

David Turnbull’s low bending shot was pushed wide by Robbie Mutch in the opening minutes and Leigh Griffiths turned wide at the resulting corner when he really should have scored.

Christie also threatened but his three first-half efforts were all too high, as was a Turnbull free-kick.

Kristoffer Ajer’s marauding runs became a feature of the match and the Norway defender fired wide at the end of one venture into Falkirk territory.

Griffiths, who had a first-half penalty appeal turned down, tested Mutch early in the second period as the hosts’ relentless pressure continued.

And when the opener came, it had a touch of fortune as Forrest retrieved Tom Rogic’s pass on the left of the Falkirk box and fired into the opposite corner off Lewis Neilson’s head. It was the Scotland player’s first goal since an ankle injury in September kept him out for almost six months.

Falkirk had struggled to retain possession whenever they got beyond their own defensive third and their task grew much harder when Christie turned on the edge of the box and beat Mutch at his near post.

Mutch continued to be busy with another Turnbull effort blocked. Forrest hit the rebound narrowly wide and soon made way for Elyounoussi, having previously made just two substitute appearances in 2021.

And Elyounoussi made an impact off the bench, latching on to Jonjoe Kenny’s cross and flicking the ball over Mutch.

Kenny and Griffiths’ replacement Albian Ajeti missed further Celtic chances before captain Scott Brown, who will join Aberdeen this summer, forced a late save by Mutch.

What did they say?

Celic winger James Forrest: “I’m delighted. Starting was a big achievement. It’s great to add the goal. The first couple of months was definitely the hardest. Since the turn of the year I’ve been back in amongst the team training. I just want to keep doing what I’m doing just now.”

Celtic interim manager John Kennedy: “We’ve missed James Forrest. He’s an eliminator, he’s direct and he’s hungry for goals. It’s great to have him back and good to get him on the scoresheet.

“Second half, the boys were terrific – very professional, kept the ball moving, tired Falkirk out and then the spaces open up. The guys we’ve got in the team, they’ve got massive quality and that comes through in the end.”

Falkirk co-manager Lee Miller: “It was always going to be a tough ask for us to compete with them for 90 minutes. Really proud of the way the boys applied themselves. I thought we defended really well.

“The fighting spirit was there for all to see. It’s a great experience for them. Everybody worked hard right until the final whistle. We’re not going to be judged on this, our bread and butter is the league.”
