Trivia

  • KO: 15:00; Sunday; Viaplay League Cup Round 2
  • First cup fixture this season, Celtic are the holders, and so Brendan Rodgers loses his first Scottish domestic cup match ever. No treble this season.
  • Kilmarnock came into this match bouyed up having recently defeated Sevco in their league opening day match, and congrats to them so two wins against the Glasgow sides already this season.
  • Celtic had never lost a domestic cup game under Brendan Rodgers until this match, and not lost in the League Cup since November 2020 under Neil Lennon. Kilmarnock had even lost the previous six meetings and had not beaten Celtic in 13 attempts since September 2018.
  • Kimarnock pitch was a disgrace, think of a 25 year old worn out carpet!
  • CCV and Hatate out injured.
  • VAR: Controversies, a Kilmarnock player should have been off for elbowing Taylor (but not even a yellow card!); stonewall penalty should have been given for foul on Haksabonovic, but even VAR very quickly dismissed it! Disgraceful in both situations.
  • Reo Hatate is a ‘significant doubt’ for the fixture vs Sevco on Sep 3rd. Hatate suffered a grade two calf tear vs Aberdeen with a recovery time of around three to four weeks.
  • Celtic preparing to offer new deals to both Reo Hatate & Liel Abada before the closure of the transfer window.
  • Stephen Welsh signed new four-year deal with the Club!
  • Alistair Johnston has returned to training following an injury
  • Transfers :
    • In:  Gustaf Lagerbielke (est £2.5m);
    • Out: –
  • Reports (in): linked to Quentin Merlin; Ryan Fraser; Eric Dier ‘considered’ ; Wolves winger Daniel Podence (unlikely); Danish Under-21 striker Mathias Kvistgaarden
  • Reports (out): Siegrist & others exploring options to leave; Bosun Lawal signed new contract with Celtic but heads out on loan to Fleetwood Town;Furuhashi touted by some for Spurs who just sold Harry Kane for 100m; Brugge in for Vata?, Rocco Vata set to leave Celtic on a permanent transfer…; Celtic are not interested in pursuing Ryan Fraser despite Newcastle United offering a deal for the Scotland forward, while a bid for Daniel Podence is also a nonstarter due to Wolves winger’s wage demands,  James McCarthy to leave the club after just six starts in two seasons.
  • Celtic have earned an additional €1.137m to their 2023-24 #UCL participation fund without kicking a ball tonight, after AEK Athens knocked Dinamo Zagreb out of the Champions League.
  • EPL: some £100m+ transfers going thru breaking records.
  • Celtic Youth players: 13 players signed three-year contracts. The young players are: Kalvin Bennett, Cole Crawford, Rhys Dargie, Ronan Ferns, Marcus Gill, Finlay Hale, Robbie Heron, Samuel Isiguzo, Andrew Kyle, Jamie Meikle, Tom Pickford, Robert Rachwal and Aidan Rice.
  • Reports claim Barrowfield upgrade is going ahead in 2024. Cost est £21m.
  • Bernabei given £2k fine after found guilty of DUI in August 2022. Banned from driving for 12 months.
  • Hearts, Sevco & Hibs through in Europe to playoffs.
  • Scotland is 9th in the European co-efficient table and punching way above our weight considering by population we should be around 25th.
  • Jordan Larsson, the son of ex-Celt Henrik Larsson, scored the third fastest goal in Champions League history on Tuesday evening just past for Copenhagen.
  • Sevco Chief Executive James Bisgrove has been playing to the crowd today getting their pet hacks to ‘report’ on the Glasgow Derby ticket row very much from their disingenuous stance. See https://thecelticstar.com/senior-celtic-source-rangers-agreed-that-ibrox-corner-is-unsafe-and-plan-to-install-nets/
  • Women’s football world cup final on this same day in Australia: England lost to Spain. The poor Spanish girl who scored the winning goal in today’s World Cup Final has just discovered her own father has passed away. Awful news. RIP
  • Two Glasgow engineers have combined their love for design and football to create limited edition chess boards, featuring Celtic and Rangers (RIP) heroes.
  • Nurse Lucy Letby has been found guilty of murdering seven babies on a neonatal unit, making her the UK’s most prolific child serial killer in modern times.

Summary

“We lacked quality in the game and it was just so disappointing,”

Celtic aura diminished as superb Kilmarnock asphyxiate Brendan Rodgers’ treble hopes The start of a new Celtic era and already the end of one [for Celtic].

El Salto of KDS:
No Hatate, no creativity, it’s that simple
Any team of cluggers we now come up against this season also has the blueprint, flood midfield, aggression bordering on thuggery, mark McGregor closely.
We never won a 50-50 ball all game, we didn’t want to know, we are too soft, too small and many of the players weren’t interested or unfit. A piss poor situation to be in this early in the season, after the highs of the last two seasons. The team has been allowed to stagnate, we’ve lost key players, replaced them with projects. The manager was owned today tactically by a serial loser. We all know we need a new keeper, two new full backs and a general in midfield, lets face it, we won’t see them this window. That’s my concerns about the team and performance, lets look at the the other factors.
Clear red card offence on Taylor which VAR chose to ignore, his being off the pitch is the start of the chain reaction that leads to the goal, a goal which is clearly offside.
Again, VAR excels itself by fecking Celtic over.
The incident right at the end on Haksabanovic is a stonewall penalty, given to any other team in the country, but not Celtic, especially when we’re on the ropes and chasing a leveller.
If we don’t sort ourselves out soon we will be on the end of more reverses, we have no discernable shape and players look confused, wtf was Kyogo doing deep in midfield when we need a goal?
Only people who were blameless today were the two centre backs, the rest of the team were found wanting.
Not a good day.

E-Tims @ETimsNet: Dreadful. Not one player up for the game. Not one taking the game to the opponent. Shambolic. All on the manager as there was no sign of any plan whatsover out there today.

Highland__Paddy:  That first half was a tough watch , didn’t seem to be any style of play coming from us. Midfield will have to get involved in the second half and start creating.

The 1-0 Viaplay Cup loss away to a Kilmarnock who were simply fabulous in their ferociousness means that, inside three weeks of competitive football across his second spell, Brendan Rodgers has now suffered a fate he avoided for the full 30 months he was in charge first time around.

The Northern Irishman couldn’t keep hoovering up cup competitions forever, having won every one of the five he contested in Scotland in racking up seven straight honours between 2016 and 2018. No fewer than 24 cup ties negotiated for that perfect record. As a consequence, for his trophy run to end abruptly in his 25th such assignment is a mighty chastening for Rodgers and his club. The treble winners instantly dethroned, effectively, as wearers of this bejewelled crown. Another clean sweep, as he achieved back-to-back, is out of reach. And with it, without over-reacting to a solitary loss at a Rugby Park he had previously endured defeat, a certain aura.

Celtic possessed none. Their ineptness against a buzzing and bustling home side left them looking like wholly lacking lightweights. Rodgers and the club’s support will be alarmed by the fact. And they should be. The scamping and clamping from Derek McInnes’ men was outstanding, but Celtic assisted them in those tasks by failing to respond in kind. Not until they conceded what proved to be the winner from Marley Watkins in the 59th minute did they rouse from a slumber. Until then, it felt as if they were dozing on even as their opponent was shouting in their ears.

The 64th minute introduction of Yang Hyun-jun, replacing the ineffectual Liel Abada, and Sead Haksabanovic’s 75th minute arrival for an off-colour Matt O’Riley led to Celtic exhibiting urgency as for so long had eluded them. Indeed, Haksabanovic probably should have had a penalty in the fourth minute of added time when Lewis Mayo did seem to pull the foot of the attacker away from him with his outstretched leg. But the story of the contest for Celtic wasn’t a questionable VAR call, but so many rum contributions from those in visiting colours.

It is astonishing the Kilmarnock have now been able to slap down both Celtic and Rangers on their own patch in this nascent campaign, and not coughed up a goal against either or Hearts in recent weeks. Yet, as he noted afterwards, that is down to this iteration of Kilmarnock now appearing every inch a Derek McInnes team. Aggression married to adeptness, with their 3-5-2 formation suffocating Celtic. To ensure inauspicious first starts for this week’s arrival Gustaf Lagerbielke – injuries to Cameron Carter-Vickers and Stephen Welsh forcing him to form an instant partnership with another recent recruit Maik Nawrocki – and Odin Thiago Holm.

It would be unfair to point the finger at either, when as much as Holm struggled with the physicality of his zipping-around opponents, it was the same story for Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda, O’Riley and Abada.

Aside from an early Kyogo Furuhasi opening, and Yang being denied by a last-ditch tackle when through on goal late on, Celtic’s creative deficiencies always left them vulnerable to one defensive slip. That duly arrived just before the hour mark when – with Greg Taylor off receiving treatment – Maeda was powderpuff as the superb Danny Armstrong faced him up and nipped beyond him to flash a low ball across the face of goal. No Celtic player reacted, but Watkins burst to life to arrive from deep and apply a one-touch finish, a VAR check confirming he was just onside. It was the day for both teams in a nutshell.

Marley Watkins on target as Kilmarnock dump holders Celtic out of League Cup

Marley Watkins scored the only goal of the game as Kilmarnock sensationally sent the holders, Celtic, out of the Viaplay League Cup at Rugby Park.

The big striker converted a Danny Armstrong pass in the 59th minute of a pulsating last-16 tie in which the well-organised hosts had to withstand relentless pressure. Derek McInnes’ side held on to complete a remarkable early-season Old Firm double, having beaten Rangers 1-0 on the opening day of the Premiership.

For Brendan Rodgers’ side, the loss was a bitter and unexpected blow to a club who have won the trophy six times in the previous seven seasons. “We are very disappointed, and it was certainly nowhere near the level that we need to be at to win the game,” Rodgers said.

“It is a tough place to come, of course, but we need to show more and we need to have a greater physicality in the game. When you have won that battle you need to play with more quality and we didn’t play with that.”

Rodgers won seven out of seven trophies in his first spell at Celtic, and insisted the defeat put that achievement into context. “I think when I came in here before and won trebles, people think that’s just what you come in and do. It’s a very difficult thing to do … [but] I want to win every game as the Celtic manager and this is bitterly disappointing.”

In a lively opening spell, Killie defender Corrie Ndaba flicked a Danny Armstrong delivery just over the bar before Kyogo Furuhashi fired wide at the other end. The Japan international then stole the ball from Armstrong and raced clear, only to see his low drive saved by Will Dennis.

Celtic looked more purposeful at the start of the second half but in the 54th minute it was Hart who had to make a terrific save from Kyle Magennis’ drive from 16 yards. Killie then took the lead while the Celtic defender Greg Taylor was off the pitch getting treatment on a face knock.

David Turnbull and Yang Hyun-jun came on for Celtic as the travelling Hoops fans urged them forward. Brad Lyons threw himself in front of Yang’s shot to take the ball over the bar for another corner, which Killie defended. After seven minutes of added time, they held on for a stunning victory.

Kilmarnock will host Hearts in the quarter-finals, and McInnes wants his team to believe they can go the distance. “[We want to] try and create something special,” the manager said. “Come up with big occasions and try and go as far as we can in the cup, and be a cup-winning team. It helps the optimism that is clearly about the place.”

Rangers, who beat Morton 2-1 at Ibrox on Saturday, are at home again against Livingston in an all-Premiership last eight. Aberdeen will travel to Ross County, while Hibernian will host St Mirren after eliminating Raith Rovers.

‘We need quality’ – Brendan Rodgers makes Celtic transfers confession after cup defeat at Kilmarnock

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/we-need-quality-brendan-rodgers-makes-celtic-transfers-confession-after-cup-defeat-at-kilmarnock-4262050
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has confessed to the need for “quality” additions in the closing weeks of the transfer window after suffering his first cup loss at the helm of the club.

Conceding that his team were “nowhere near the level” they needed to be in the 1-0 Viaplay Cup defeat against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, he suggested market moves would be required to address their shortcomings.

Four summer signings featured across a lame display for his men – to make it an encounter of the type he avoided in winning all 24 cup ties he faced in his first spell – with Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago Holm earning debuts, Maik Nawrocki partnering Lagerbielke, and Yang Hyun-jun coming off the bench. All in their early 20s and relatively experienced, Rodgers was asked if he would be required to target players in their late 20s – Kyogo Furuhashi and Carl Starfelt two early Ange Postecoglou signings in that bracket.

“We want good players, whatever age they are,” he said. “We need quality, that’s for sure. Hopefully between now and the end of the window we can improve the squad. Clearly the model of the club is to bring the players in at a younger age and develop them and improve them. But we are not against bringing in someone at 26 or 27 if they can improve the squad.”

Rodgers chose to distance himself from what he had achieved previously at Celtic with seven straight trophy successes in his term between May 2016 and February 2019 in being asked to assess how much of a setback it was to him experiencing a first cup defeat as Hoops manager.

“I think when I came in here before and won trebles people think that’s just what you come in and do,” he said. “It is a very difficult thing to do and you see with this defeat that magnifies the achivement from before. It is a new cycle and I want to win every game as the Celtic manager and this is bitterly disappointing. Of course, it is always a setback when you go out of a cup competition but we have 24 hours to get over it and there is a long season ahead and many things to play for so that is what we will work on.

“I said at the beginning when I came in here that this was not a continuation. Good teams aren’t born. There are new players in, players have left. So we have to work very hard and if we think that it is just going to happen then that is not going to be the case at Celtic. You have to settle in very quickly. The new players will have seen that, the young players coming into the club with a huge expectation but they will get better and improve. On days like today even though it is a sore one you have got to take your medicine and stay together and move onto the next game.”

Marley Watkins forced in the only goal of the game for Kilmarnock just before the hour

Battling Kilmarnock inflicted Celtic’s first cup loss under Brendan Rodgers to set up a Viaplay Cup quarter-final meeting with Hearts.

During his first spell at Celtic, Rodgers picked up this trophy on three occasions, along with two successes in the Scottish Cup.

But his side struggled to create openings against their energetic Premiership hosts and Marley Watkins touched in the only goal on 59 minutes.

Kilmarnock, who beat Rangers at Rugby Park on the opening day of the league season, pressed bravely and worked with unflagging spirit.

Despite having just 30% of possession, Derek McInnes’ side had the best of the few chances there were.

Defender Corrie Ndaba twice went close in the first half, with an early volley and a header in stoppage time. After the break, Kyle Magennis had a shot pushed round a post by Joe Hart.

Watkins started the move that led to the goal with a strong surge down the left and he was in the right place to divert Danny Armstrong’s shot across goal into the net.

Kilmarnock goalkeeper Will Dennis was seldom troubled, making a few routine stops.

When Celtic substitute Yang Hyun-Jun did get a good glimpse of goal late on, Brad Lyons made a fantastic lunging block.

Kilmarnock were camped in their own penalty area during seven minutes of stoppage time, holding firm to spark wild scenes of celebration in the home ends of the stadium.

Kilmarnock outwork Celtic for deserved victory – analysis

Celtic had won six of the past seven editions of this tournament, while Rodgers won seven out of seven trophies in his first period in charge.

This time, the former Liverpool and Leicester City boss has fallen at the first hurdle.

Rodgers will be frustrated at the lack of zip in his side’s attack and may have concerns about his options on the bench.

Kilmarnock snapped into tackles and regularly unsettled the visitors’ new-look central defensive partnership of Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke, with the Swede making his debut just days after signing.

Magennis did a great job of nullifying the influence of Celtic captain Callum McGregor in the middle of the park, with assistance from 18-year-old David Watson, who never stopped running.
What they said

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes: “I’m really pleased with everything I saw today. I thought we limited Celtic to very little. It’s testament to the players in front of my goalkeeper, who, across three games, has faced two or three shots.

“There’s no point in beating Celtic if we don’t go on to win it now. I’ve just said that to the boys. No one will remember this result if we don’t go on and win it.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “We didn’t do enough when we had the ball. We didn’t show enough personality and didn’t show the quality to win the game.

“You have to give all the credit to Kilmarnock. They defended strongly, got their blocks in and took one of the few chances they had in the game.

“I have to analyse ourselves, though, and the quality wasn’t good enough in the game.”
