Brendan Rodgers speaks after a 𝙙𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙘 97th minute winner secured Celtic’s 2-1 win over Motherwell

“I’m really happy with the progress we’re making day on day, but we have to keep working and we have to keep working very hard. We’re showing the traits of a really good team.”

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · 1h Incredible end to a game that struggled to show any signs of life, so many Celtic players not at the races today but thought David Turnbull changed the game, tremendous goals from Palma & Spittal and a superb ball from Taylor for O’Riley to win it, WHAT AN ENDING!

El Salto:Fantastic win in the end, but what a struggle
Played ok in possession in first half but created nothing, second half we were bothered by their physicality
When we made the triple change I couldn´t see a goal coming, then bang, great goal from Palma
I thought their goal was coming, and we would have conceded earlier if not for Bain, but that was the start of my woes
Took a fit of rage, when they scored and fired my reading glasses at the laptop, broke the screen and my glasses, and now have her indoors moaning like feck
When I picked up my phone after the equalizer and the laptop incident I see a few “yaaasss” texts from my bros, so it´s breeeaaathe and calm down
Rebooted an old laptop for a bit of Kerrydale St
Yaaaaaaaasssssss

Italiabhoy of KDS:

The nature of the finish can obscure proper analysis, but I think there were plenty of positives today among the negatives.

Firstly: We Never Stop. Good to see the determination remains.

Secondly AJ, Taylor, Calmac, Palma, Kyogo, and Scales I thought were all good. Wonderful finish by Matt O’Riley, but this wasn’t his best game overall. I think we are a better team with Reo in the middle.

Thirdly: Bain. Saved us, twice… I’m not his biggest fan but that was two huge saves that wer critical to the result.

Negatives… We aren’t clicking in the final third. Far too intricate around the box when a bit more directness is required.

Overall though, we are in the midst of a really tough run of away games, and are still beset by injuries. To come through this in the manner we are is hugely encoraging.

E-Tims @ETimsNet · 1h Palma first a shot across the area from far edge of the area and it curls into the back of the net 1-0

Moravcik67 @Moravcik67_ · 1h Can’t beat a late winner. Except when the late winner comes after a late equaliser to what you earlier thought was a later winner. If that makes sense.

Everything Celtic @aboutceltic · 1h  | 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝟭-𝟮 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗰 // 𝗙𝗧 Wow. Wow. Wow. This is the sign of champions, what an absolutely incredible end to the match  Sum that one up if you can?

Celtic Australis @celticaustralis · 1h Nothing better than a 97th minute winner!

Joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki: didn’t see that one coming!!!! What a dire game until the end. however, we can’t stick our heads in the sand, Celtic seriously need to have a review of recent performances. It’s not all due to loss of players to injury. More entertainment in the last 3-4 mins than the other 90+ minutes….

E-Tims @ETimsNet That was as tough a league game as you can get. I hear some fans saying it’s not competitive enough at times. Well, MWell were excellent today. Made it so hard for us & had a go. Great resilience & character from Celtic Special shout out to Scott Bain. Made two cracking saves at 0-0. Guy has hardly played. Brendan (and Ange) speak highly of him. Can’t be easy getting a start after a long time out & pressure that goes with it. Well done It took Celtic until the last 15 mins to start to truly dominate. Subs Palma and Turnbull both playing well. To face a very hard game, lose 95th min equaliser and still go on to win is the mark of champions.

Matt O’Riley sparks mad scenes at Motherwell with last-gasp winner for Celtic

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/sport/football/matt-o-riley-sparks-mad-scenes-at-motherwell-with-last-gasp-winner-for-celtic/ar-AA1huAll

Matt O’Riley celebrated his new contract with a winner seven minutes into stoppage time as Celtic edged a 2-1 win over Motherwell after a dramatic finale at Fir Park.

Blair Spittal had levelled for Motherwell two minutes earlier after substitute Luis Palma grabbed his first Celtic goal in the 87th minute.

Fans were on the pitch after each of the late goals and missiles flew between the two sets of supporters after O’Riley’s winner.

The game had been on a knife edge throughout and Scott Bain, deputising for the suspended Joe Hart, made two good saves while the game was goalless.

O’Riley’s new four-year deal was announced on the morning of the game and he showed his worth by converting a cushioned volley at the back post following Greg Taylor’s cross.

The victory set Celtic up for the visit of Lazio in the Champions League on Wednesday and delivered another blow to Motherwell, who have now suffered narrow defeats against the top three in successive weeks.

Celtic had the bulk of the early possession but the only chances in the first quarter came from set-pieces. Spittal came close with an overhead kick and Liam Scales headed wide at the other end.

Motherwell were looking solid and Kyogo Furuhashi curled wide from 22 yards when Celtic did manage to pass the ball through the lines.

The home side had the best chance of the half when Spittal’s quick free-kick found Harry Paton’s run. Bain came out to block Paton’s shot with his foot and Celtic cleared the midfielder’s driven cross on the rebound.

Liam Kelly made his only save of the first half from O’Riley after quick feet from Yang Hyun-jun before Spittal got Motherwell in behind again. However, Brodie Spencer could not find a final ball to capitalise.

James Forrest replaced Yang at half-time and Celtic began to show more urgency in the final third. Taylor and Gustaf Lagerbielke could not make the most of half chances.

Motherwell raised their own tempo in possession and had the ball in the net after Bevis Mugabi challenged Bain at a high ball. Stephen O’Donnell hit the ball off Mugabi on the lone before knocking home the rebound and the offside flag went up. Mugabi’s challenge might have been penalised anyway if the wing-back had netted first time.

Taylor created Celtic’s best chance so far when he won the ball on the edge of the box and set up Daizen Maeda but the Japanese attacker shot over with only Kelly to beat.

Motherwell responded and Theo Bair volleyed straight at Bain before the goalkeeper’s feet again came to Celtic’s rescue when he blocked Spittal’s effort following Callum Slattery’s through ball.

The home side looked tired as the game entered the final 10 minutes and Kelly saved Forrest’s header after Palma’s cross.

Then came the drama. Palma curled just inside the far post from just outside the corner of the box as the ball whipped in between defender Dan Casey and Kelly. Fans spilled on to the track from behind the goal in the Tommy McLean Stand.

Motherwell found some energy and with plenty of players in the Spittal slotted into the far corner. Dozens of Motherwell fans were suddenly on the pitch and they were barely back in their seats when O’Riley struck and sparked an even bigger pitch invasion.

Motherwell 1-2 Celtic reaction: Mentality revealed, cutting edge concerns, midfield flatness, player ratings

A game that offered so little for so long ended in drama at Fir Park as Matt O’Riley 97th minute winner gave Celtic all three points against a resolute Motherwell side.

It was a stay of execution for Brendan Rodgers’ side who looked certain to drop points after Blair Spittal had beaten Scott Bain with a raking effort from the edge of the box – a goal that cancelled out Luis Palma’s 87th minute effort that looked to have been a cross that somehow ended up in the back of the net.

Celtic’s mentality revealed

As they headed into the season there was a pedestrian feeling about Celtic’s performances. When Slattery netted in the 95th minute – and the board showed only five minutes would be added – there was an overwhelming feeling within Fir Park that Motherwell had done enough to take the point. It revealed a bit of steel in Rodgers’ side that they found the resilience to dig out the win with O’Riley’s calm finish prompting wild celebrations – not all welcome – from the Celtic support. O’Riley has now netted more goals than he did in the entirity of last season.

Where is Celtic’s cutting edge?

Underneath the drama of the win and the circumstances with how it came about, it was a fairly inauspicious game for Celtic as they prepare to go into Wednesday’s Champions League game against Lazio at Celtic Park. They dominated large spells and had ample pressure but toiled to break down what was a robust Motherwell side but, for a team who have scored more domestic goals than anyone else so far in the cinch Premiership, they were toothless up front.

It is, though, worth pointing out that this was Celtic’s fifth successive clean sheet in the league, a run of defensive solidity and their first five game such run in the league since Oct/November 2019.

Bain, in for the suspended Joe Hart with the keeper forced into one block with his legs after Harry Paton had latched onto a quick free-kick, a moment that irked Rodgers as he urged his side to stay alert. It is unlikely that Lazio would facilitate such a let off. Motherwell did have the ball in Celtic’s net – VAR ruled it out for a foul on Bain – before Spittal found a way past him.

Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley need to be on song on Wednesday

The contractual news on Friday evening and Saturday morning that Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley had signed new contracts inoculates the club should there be any serious advances for either player in January or next summer.

Both are players who harbour ambitions of a bigger stage but they will appreciate the opportunity that the Champions League stage affords. Hatate, who took a hefty knock to the face after feeling the force of Callum Slattery’s boot, has shown in tantalising glimpses the elegance and composure he can offer Celtic’s midfield while O’Riley has been arguably the most consistent performer this term.

Getting both fine tuned for the visit of the Italians would help Celtic find something to sing about in a tournament that has largely been a sobering environment for them to operate in across recent campaigns. However, there was a flatness about them against Motherwell for long periods – albeit that O’Riley popped up to pay back some of that new deal.

Celtic will hope that the disco lights of Celtic Park and the Champions League theme ensures the adrenalin that was evident in the final stages at Fir Park is evident on Wednesday.

Motherwell v Celtic
Luis Palma’s goal appeared to have given Celtic victory, but instead unleashed a chaotic final few minutes

Matt O’Riley scored a 97th-minute winner in the most dramatic of Scottish Premiership finales to give Celtic victory over a Motherwell side who thought they had salvaged a late point.

After 87 minutes without a goal at Fir Park, Celtic substitute Luis Palma whipped a dangerous cross across goal, which ended up finding the corner of the net after Dan Casey blocked goalkeeper Liam Kelly’s line of sight.

Rather than securing the win, though, Palma’s opener ended up setting off a sequence of chaos.

Motherwell equalised after 95 minutes when Blair Spittal gathered inside the box, shuffled the ball onto his right foot and drilled a shot right into the corner to send the home crowd wild.

Those celebrations were cut short, though, when Celtic broke forward and O’Riley arrived at the back post to net an incredible winner for the visitors and their jubilant supporters.

Have your say on Motherwell’s display
What did you make of Celtic’s performance?

The late blow was cruel on Stuart Kettlewell’s Motherwell, who put so much into the game but were increasingly forced back until they ultimately paid the price.

The visitors dominated possession throughout but it was Harry Paton who had the best chance of the opening half when quick thinking from a free-kick released him, only for the deputising Scott Bain to save with a foot.

The game opened up after half-time and Lennon Miller thought he had bundled home the opener for the home side after Bevis Mugabi rose with Bain, but a VAR check concluded the defender had strayed offside.

Celtic continued to probe a well-drilled defence and looked certain to score when Greg Taylor fed Daizen Maeda, but he got it all wrong and tamely shot over the bar.

They nearly paid dearly when Spittal drilled one low towards the far post but Bain, in for the suspended Joe Hart, strained out a leg to block the ball to safety.

The visitors increasingly pushed forward and eventually got their reward in what was an utterly compelling final few minutes.

Motherwell will feel they more than merited something, after failing to take any points from their two previous impressive performances. For Celtic, this was a quite incredible outcome. Brendan Rodgers’ men never give in and were rewarded for that.
Player of the match – Matt O’Riley (Celtic)
Matt O’Riley of Celtic
Any number of Motherwell’s players merited a mention in another impressive overall display, but O’Riley takes the plaudits for making the crucial contribution at the vital moment
Pain for Motherwell as resilient Celtic deliver again – analysis

Where do you start? What an incredible finale and outcome for the champions. Just when you thought they would drop points they responded. And again, after conceding that injury-time leveller.

Talk about resilience and determination. It’s no fluke either. They simply never settled for anything other than the points and once again found a way with seconds to spare.

Some questioned the decision to replace the subdued Kyogo Furuhashi but ultimately Celtic delivered another win at another challenging environment. It may be one they look back on as a key moment.

For Motherwell, this script feels familiar. Once again, they performed admirably. Once again, they leave with nothing. It must feel so painful, particularly given how late they equalised after just falling behind.

So many positives for Stuart Kettlewell, but it may take a little time to get over the nature of this defeat.
What the managers said

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “A fantastic victory for the players. I said to them after the game that this club’s history is built on going to the end and scoring late goals.

“I thought we were the dominant team. Motherwell did well in terms of organisation and we just needed to show a wee bit more quality around the box.

“We didn’t panic, we just waited for that moment, and Matt continues doing what he’s been doing. A really good day for us. It’s fantastic for the supporters – they were patient and kept driving us forward in the second half.”

Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell: “Our team really took part in the game against high-level opposition. They executed so much of what we asked them to do and we carried a real threat in the game.

“I can’t articulate the gulf in the size of the football clubs but I don’t think you saw that on the pitch. The fashion of play has been top level, so we have to take that and use it as motivation.

“We tried to tweak our shape after our goal, and we should have been more compact at the back post. Those are the fine margins that can ultimately cost you points and it has done again today.”
