Trivia

  • KO:14:30; Sunday
  • St Johnstone have appointed former Scotland & Hearts boss Craig Levein as their new manager.
  • Holm’s first league start for Celtic. Yang replaces injured Maeda. Ex-Celt Jonny Hayes’ 400th Scottish League game.
  • A really brutal head collision 100% the fault of the Aberdeen player, Kyogo practically full out with the knock! How was he not given a red card! Only a Yellow Card, even VAR didn’t upgrade it! Brendan Rodgers says Kyogo Furuhashi will not travel to Japan on international duty after the clash of heads that saw him replaced against Aberdeen.
“I don’t know how many minutes it was, but I’ve lost my memory, and I don’t remember anything about my teammates worrying about me and walking out of the pitch by myself. At the hospital, the doctor told me that you’re fine without any problems, and I felt that the god of football protected me. I will continue to do my best with keeping my gratitude in mind.”
Kyogo on Social Media, referring to a serious head collision in a 6-0 win over Aberdeen (Nov 2023)

  • Injury: Daizen Maeda could miss the rest of this calendar year through an injury sustained in the challenge that saw him see red vs A. Madrid.
  • Green Brigade fans still banned whilst standoff continues so their standing section is half empty (as not all in that area are Green Brigade members). The Scotsman Newspaper: “[Celtic] is working through a number of requests from amongst that 267  [Green Brigade members] who no longer wish to be registered with the group and will continue to  liaise directly with these individuals.”
  • Brendan Rodgers says he would scrap VAR technology in its current format. VAR coming under more criticisms with more calls to have it suspended at least.
  • Brendan Rodgers admits Celtic need to unearth another striker in January as Asia Cup impact laid bare
  • Green Brigade plan ‘day of action’ if dispute not resolved.
  • Internationals next week.
  • Denmark head coach Kasper Hjulmand is in no doubt Matt O’Riley’s time will come but says he could not drop any of his more experienced midfielders to include the Celtic 23-year-old in his latest squad for vital Euro 2024 qualifiers.
  • Kyogo & Maeda called up for Japan qualifiers (but Maeda will have to decline due to injury, and then Kyogo after today). Despite initially being snubbed, Matt O’Riley has earned a deserved second call-up to the Danish senior team.
  • Chris Sutton believes making a mess of their summer recruitment was the reason for the “embarrassing” defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
  • Rodgers has told Celtic midfielder Odin Thiago Holm he “needs to do more” to earn a regular starting place.
  • Church: Transgender people can be baptised and be godparents, Vatican says
  • Special video of Shunsuke Nakamura Farewell Match to be held in Yokohama on December 17th has been released. He was a great player for Celtic.
  • Former Hearts boss Robbie Neilson, announced as Tampa Bay Rowdies manager. Their nickname is the “Fannies”
  • Marches throughout the UK (and abroad) this memorial weekend, in the name of calling for peace & ceasefire in the Palestine/Israel conflict. Lot of far-right tried to do counter protests and cause trouble.
  • Ghana striker Raphael Dwamena has died aged 28 after collapsing on the pitch during a league match in Albania. RIP

Summary

“Listen, if you ask me right now, I would get rid of it. Absolutely. But if there’s money been invested in it, for the greater good of the game, that is supposedly to make it better, then you have to give it every chance. But if you’re asking me now, I would go back to just pure football, and we know where there’s humans involved there will be mistakes. I would rather accept that than what we see at the minute.”
Rodgers on VAR (pre-match)

El Salto of KDS:
Great performance, no failures
A great way to bounce back from Tuesday night
How Collum can watch that assault on Kyogo and only give a yellow is beyond me, and how he didn’t call the penalty in real time beggars belief
It was only a matter of time this season before we lost a player to thuggery, and no protection from a ref who is out of his depth
Palma, Yang and MOR were standouts
We played some stunning football, yet the narrative is all about how poor Aberdeen were
Boyd, in the studio was a disgrace, totally raging, and makes a snide remark insinuating that Aberdeen weren’t up for it today, but would be in their next game because “Rangers are in town”
That remark went unchallenged by Petrov and McFadden, which was very disappointing, I’m sure Sutton wouldn’t have let that one go.

Etims: A real shame the fabulous @NCCeltic aren’t in their usual position today. They add so much with their passion, noise and support. Hopefully a compromise is found soon 1st half we zipped it about well. Yang and Palma a constant threat. 2nd goal a cracking piece of interplay & typical Kyogo finish. Thought sheep would struggle due to tough game in Greece on Thursday night & it showed. We were too sharp for them. We controlled 2nd half but lacked zip until 3rd goal then floodgates opened. Delighted for Oh. Strikers live on goals. He’s worked his socks off & got rewarded today. Palma was v good. What a cross for Oh’s 1st. Yang also v good. Real potential there. Great squad rotation. It’s been a very tough run of games in a short window. Sitting 5 points clear in the League with many of the young players also getting game time / developing is a Brucie Bonus. Two week break coming at a good time. Kudos to Brendan and the players.

Yatao @yataoda4 · 2h Yang is fantasista & Palma is outstanding baller. O’Riley’s pass, OH’s dynamic play and Bull’s middle range shot were impressive. Holm also performed his strengths, and Berna’s sense of attack improved further. Our team has definitely regained confidence today. Well done bhoys

Lisbon Lion @tirnaog_09 Despite the faux outrage on social media, the minute’s silence was observed well by over 99% at the game yesterday. The few who disrespected it puzzle me, why not stay under the concourse till it’s over if you don’t agree with it?

Celtic thrash Aberdeen but mindless fans spoil show – player ratings as star performer would have Strictly judges purring

The champions dished out their own 6-0 scoreline against the hapless Dons at Parkhead

It was a case of the dazzling, the deficient and the desperate as Celtic dished out a 6-0 drubbing at home to Aberdeen that exposed levels, the filleting of the Dons following their own embarrassment by the same scoreline in midweek to Atletico Madrid.

In the first bracket were Yang Hyun-jun and Matt O’Riley, two players with which the Pittodrie men simply could not live as they were overwhelmed from the early minutes …and lost three goals across ten minutes of added time. The South Korean winger Yang – taking over from the long-term injured Daizen Maeda – was whip smart as he bagged his first goal for the club. The swiftness and sleekness in his at-will sashaying past defenders in the opening period resulted in a first half showing of the sort to have Strictly judges drooling. O’Riley, in turn, pulled the strings to have the Aberdeen midfield in knots as the Scottish champions helped themselves to a two-goal lead in little over quarter-of-an-hour.

Barry Robson’s men then provided the second category in the encounter’s tagline, simply through being so second best. It was never a fixture that offered much hope of different, mind you. Their admirable exertions in the 2-2 draw with POAK, two days after their opponents’ Champions League chasing, suggested it might be shootie-in for Brendan Rodgers’ men on a mission for some footballing therapy.

As for the dismal, the Celtic support – even sans Green Brigade – can be guaranteed to provide that when it comes to the minute’s silence on Remembrance Sunday. The club’s tannoy announcer couldn’t have made it more clear – in talking of all those lost in conflicts, the violence currently scarring the world, and the call for peace – that this sober reflection was as much for those Palenstinians who are being killed in Gaza, than any who have died wearing a British uniform. As some in the standing section shamefully disrupted the silence by singing and waving Palestinian flags, it wasn’t just irony, but listening that seemed lost on the disruptors.

The mood as quickly changed by Celtic’s immediate menace, Luis Palma up there with Yang and O’Riley, in providing that. The ninth-minute opener was the product of his burrowing down the right and sending over a fizzing cross that Yang met powerfully to head in. The South Korean was then central to the 16th-minute pinball pulling apart of the visitors’ backline that earned the second, firing through to O’Riley for his cutback to be clipped in at the near post in typical Kyogo Furuhashi, eh, fashion.

The striker was then lost to a hellish cementing by Slobodan Rubezic minutes into the second period, but it was his replacement Oh Hyeon-gyu that was pivotal to a pounding becoming an utter pasting. Referee Willie Collum missed the forward being cleaned out in the box by Jack MacKenzie but VAR didn’t for a 70th minute award battered in by Palma. Then came the late, late show, substitute David Turnbull scoring, as he does, by lashing in a low drive from the edge of the area, that found its target via the base of the post. This 92nd-strike was followed by Oh bundling in on 96 minutes then racing through to a ball over the top and emphatically hammering past Kelle Roos in the final seconds.

Celtic restored their eight-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership as they thumped six goals past a feeble Aberdeen.

Brendan Rodgers’ side all but settled the game within the opening 16 minutes following a Yang Hyun-jun header and tap-in from Kyogo Furuhashi, who later departed with a head injury following an aerial challenge from Slobodan Rubezic.

Aberdeen were rarely seen as an attacking force, never mind one that was likely to stretch their unbeaten run to four games.

The biggest surprise was that it took Celtic until the 77th minute to extend their lead through Luis Palma’s penalty, with David Turnbull and Oh Hyeon-gyu – twice – adding the gloss in stoppage time.

There was no evidence of Celtic feeling any pressure from Rangers’ earlier win away to Livingston, which narrowed the gap at the top to five points, as they eased to a ninth consecutive win over the Dons.

The latest at Aberdeen

Aberdeen manager Barry Robson had made four changes, only one of them forced, as he looked to introduce fresh legs into a side who battled to a brave 2-2 draw away to POAK in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

However, it was one of the two new faces introduced by Rodgers following his side’s 6-0 Champions League thumping by Atletico Madrid that lit up the early stages.

Yang was the beneficiary of Daizen Maeda’s absence through injury and the South Korea forward immediately started weaving patterns round the mesmerised Dons defence.

When he threaded through to Kyogo, the normally deadly Japan striker had his shot parried by goalkeeper Kelle Roos into the path of Matt O’Riley, who also somehow missed the target.

Celtic would not be denied for long as Roos failed to cut out Luis Palma’s driven cross and Yang had the simple task of nodding into the unguarded net after only nine minutes for his first Celtic goal.

Yang turned provider seven minutes later as he flicked through to O’Riley, whose low ball to the front post was directed home by the toes of Kyogo.

Despite those early blows and his defence continuing to yield chances, Robson would not be shaken from his attempt to frustrate with a 5-4-1 formation.

Jonny Hayes, the former Celtic wing-back given a start by Robson, did slice wastefully wide as he failed to capitalise on a rare break up the other end, but the traffic continued towards Roos, who saved well from both Odin Holm and Palma.

Visiting centre-half Rubezic was lucky to only be shown yellow for the headed challenge on Kyogo that forced the groggy Celtic striker to be replaced shortly after the break.

Aberdeen finally got an attempt on target after 59 minutes as Robson finally tweaked his formation, but Bojan Miovski’s front-post flick was straight at goalkeeper Joe Hart.

However, the roof fell in for Aberdeen after Jack MacKenzie was adjudged to have fouled Oh as the striker shot 12 yards out and winger Palma slotted powerfully from the spot.

There was still time for Turnbull to fire in off the post and Oh to head home a superb Palma cross.

Rodgers proved right, Robson wrong – analysis

Rodgers said before kick-off he was confident there would be no hangover from the midweek hammering and that it was a good opportunity to hand Holm his first league start.

He was right on both counts, with the 20-year-old Norwegian strolling it in midfield – and on his prediction that Yang would prove a lively replacement for Maeda.

It is now 50 home league matches without defeat – and this was one of Celtic’s easiest victories during that spell.

For Aberdeen, the stats are damning. Less than 25% possession, seven visits to Celtic Park without a goal, 23 games without a win over the Glasgow side.

Robson can point to his squad having two fewer days of recovery from their European exertions than their hosts.

However, that is the burden that group-stage qualification brings, and the Dons manager has still to find a way to cope. Parking the bus is not working.
What they said

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “I said beforehand there was pain in the week, but good teams always take the opportunity to bounce back quick and I thought we did that.

“We started well, scored some wonderful goals and could have had more – the goalkeeper had a couple of wonderful saves. Some of the movement and combination play was excellent.”

Aberdeen manager Barry Robson: “Not good enough – every aspect. That’s from me, the staff, everyone.

“We never started the game well. First 15 minutes, poor, not getting close to anyone. Second half, we got them in, told them to get a bit closer to them. We got a bit closer to them for 15 minutes, but after that, we weren’t good enough.”
