Summary

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “This could have been a really tricky game for us because Hibs are a really good team. I thought our pressure was really good. Overall, delighted with the performance and I thought we were convincing winners.”

“We scored four goals and could have had a few more. Overall the mentality of the team is very good.”
Brendan Rodgers

“Mikey needs to do more…” Quite a sharp post-match comment from Brendan Rodgers about Mikey Johnston.

Hibernian manager Nick Montgomery: “The most disappointing thing was the manner of the goals we conceded. They never carved us open really, it was our own doing, just poor defending. The first two goals are totally avoidable.”

Joebloggscity of thecelticwiki:
An infinitely better performance from Celtic today after the dirge on Sunday past, with Rodgers harsh words having made a clear impact. Yang wasn’t even in the squad!

Iwata had probably his first outstanding game, but it was Oh with a double and O’Reilly who stole the headlines, albeit there was great performances from across the board. Oh was close to even getting more goals but should be satisfied with his form today.

Palma recovered his touch too with a fine penalty and some great corner kicks and a free kick late on.

The movement by the players was quite fluid and you could see the hunger in their eyes to put in a decent performance to those brave cold souls who attended today.

Squad players Tilio and Phillips came on to win some game time, but were over shadowed by their colleagues who had already won the game.

More of the same wanted moving forward, and after some underwhelming performances of late this was a great filip.

Jbj711 of KDS:
Would like to see the scouting report on the wee lad Tillio because he looks nowhere good enough to be a professional player.
Phillips looks like one of those big lads who would need ten games to get up to match speed.
Scales needs rested or moved to left back because he is starting to look like a weak link when asked to defend.
Iwata gives a far more physical aspect to our ball winning and challenging in the middle of the park partly because McGregor just doesn’t tackle most of the time.
Oh was good but as even Peter the Pointer was pointing out we need to get crosses in to the box to let him attack the ball they way he did for O’Riley’s goal.
Mikey was back to being Mikey namely flattering to deceive without actually doing anything concrete.
McGregor was good in the first half but seemed to run out of legs in the second
Palma need to simplify his game at times and just move the ball on either crossing it or passing it to others instead of  slowing it down which just lets the opposition get back in to their shape to defend.
Good performance over all and good result so hopefully Rodgers doesn’t change things in the middle of the park for the weekend.

Twitter:

Bp: Good performance. Some great centre forward play from Oh. Tomoki very assured and composed. Some great moments from MOR. Job well done. Philips can’t be better than our other centre halves. He just can’t be.

Hp: Seemed to have a bit more physicality in the team with Iwata and Oh starting and definitely made a difference , especially with McGregor further forward. Just feel the team lacks a bit of aggression.

French: Oh now has 5 goals in 2 starts to Kyogo’s 6 goals in 14 starts and some of our support will still question whether he’s good enough.

Yatao: Never doubted your ability. You are the key who moves the team forward. Keep doing your thing. Well done Tomoki!

Benny: I don’t think he has ever done much wrong apart from the games he played in defence.play him in his correct position and there is a player there

Celtic dish out Hibs reality check as improving striker takes centre stage after Kyogo Furuhashi benching

How a 4-0 win over Hibs unfolded for the defending champions at Celtic Park

Celtic’s dismantling of Hibs served as both reminder and reality check, depending on your side of the fence.

For the Scottish champions, their 4-1 home thumping of one of only two Premiership opponents to avoid defeat against them across the first round of fixtures, demonstrated that their reliance on Kyogo Furuhashi may not need be as pronounced as in recent seasons. Brendan Rodgers chose to give the club’s goalscoring talisman a breather on the bench. That meant only a second league start of the season for Oh Hyeon-gyu. On a night when the Irishman handed midfielder Tomoki Iwata his first, and Mikey Johnston a place in a Celtic XI as he hadn’t known since January 2022.

The fast-improving Oh vindicated Rodgers’ trust in him with a double. The Korean striker’s alertness snared him the night’s opener only five minutes in. And by the time he had exhibited real strength to double his tally with a 55th minute second that made it 4-0, the fear for Hibs was that they were in for an even greater mauling in Glasgow than when Nick Montgomery opened up to allow Rangers to run through them for that scoreline six weeks ago.

That would have been rough on the Easter Road side who shuttled the ball with poise in the first period…even as they were picked off by a Celtic team that seemed on a mission to avoid a singeing of ears by their manager. As Rodgers had felt compelled to do as they were sluggish ahead of a stirring second half in their 3-1 win over St Johnstone on Sunday.

Yet, the bottom line for Montgomery is that while he has been able to stablise the Easter Road side – on a run of three wins and unbeaten in their past six league games heading to Glasgow’s east end – they can prove no less fodder for the title rivals than any other in the top flight. Their evening was assured to be a long one when a Luis Palma outswinging corner was clipped towards goal by Cameron Carter-Vickers, and grazed past David Marshall by a lurking, and well-positioned Oh.

The visitors goal then survived a few scares before Palma’s delivery from the wide areas – menacing throughout – was matched by Matt O’Riley’s magnetism for finding the net 36 minutes in. A gloriously whipped cross allowing the midfielder to stretch and heave a header into the far corner for his eighth goal of the campaign – putting him on the same mark as Furuhashi. VAR underpinned Celtic making it 3-0 shortly after the break with the official manning it, Gavin Duncan, instructing referee John Beaton to have a look at Lewis Stevenson catching the standing leg of Alistair Johnston with his boot, a contact that looked a penalty in real-time. Beaton agreed with a second look and Palma, dispensing with the shuddery run-up of his previous two spot-kicks – the most recent ending in a save by Laim Kelly in the 1-1 draw with Motherwell a fortnight ago – slammed in with conviction.

That facet was to the fore as Oh chased a ball down the left channel by a Callum McGregor deployed in a more advanced role. Shouldering off Will Fish, the striker darted forward and slotted away, despite a touch from Marshall. Celtic eased up then with a raft of substitutions, Hibs able to stem the goal flow with substitute Christian Dodge turning in an Elle Youan cross from the left in the 72nd minute. Consolation would be generous, better than nothing more apt.

Brendan Rodgers coy over Celtic striker position as Oh Hyeon-gyu stakes claim with Hibs double

What the Celtic manager said after the 4-1 win over Hibs

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers pointed to the desire shown by his players in their 4-1 victory at home to Hibs as being vital in the club’s quest for a third straight title.

Their thrust from the first minute was in sharp contrast to their meandering across the early stages of the previous outing at Perth – which brought an angry half-time reaction from the Irishman that led to them switching on and bagging three second half-goals in a 3-1 outcome.

The contrast in how they constructed their success over the Leith club – they were 4-0 up inside 55 minutes – suggested they proved a point in taking Rodgers’ demands on board, but the Celtic manager presented the performance differently.

“That’s what you need at big clubs like Celtic – you are always proving a point,” he said. “If you want to be celebrating at the end of the season you have to have the hunger all of the time. They had a reminder about that at the weekend but they showed it tonight.”

Rodgers, meanwhile, was coy about the prospects of Oh Hyeon-gyu being given a run after he bagged a double in starting ahead of Kyogo Furuhashi, with the Irishman putting his selection choices down to a desire to retain freshness over a busy period.

“We’ll see,” he said of Oh retaining his place for the trip to Kilmarnock on Sunday. “He’s playing well. It’s just whatever the game needs. It was ideal for him tonight and he came in and did well. But at this time of the season you need a freshness, especially in the forwards areas. Changing two of the front three was important for us and it gave us that freshness. Kyogo can’t play in every game. But then you have someone like Oh, who can make an impact.

“He led the line really well and took his goals before we game him a breather. It’s a busy period and you are trying to keep the energy and attitude in the team. We had to show tonight why we are a good team who can play well and why we are champions. It was a really good, solid performance against a good side. It was important to keep that energy with the games coming thick and fast.”

Hibs question VAR and crowd influence as revelations made over Celtic player’s penalty confession

Hibs manager Nick Montgomery questioned the use of VAR and the crowd influence in decision-making as Celtic were awarded a penalty in his club’s 4-1 defeat for an infringement on Alistair Johnston that even the player himself didn’t believe had occurred.

The award – following contact made by Lewis Stevenson – allowed the home side to go 3-0 up in the 51st minute and Montgomery didn’t suggest it impacted on the outcome. He did, though, feel it was unwarranted – given after John Beaton was asked to look at the pitchside monitor by VAR operative Gavin Duncan – and that his team, yet to receive a penalty during his three-month tenure, are treated differently by officialdom in such instances.

“Look, it’s one of them. The player who actually went down didn’t even think it was a penalty,” the Hibs manager said. “He didn’t think he got touched. He said that to the boys afterwards. Again, if we are going to go to VAR and look at every incident there are going to be a lot more free-kicks, a lot more yellow cards, a lot more penalties. Because when you slow everything down, there is always some sort of element where you can maybe change a decision. But he’s right at that moment, he’s not going to get the ball, it hasn’t affected where the ball is going to go, he is already falling down and Lewis Stevenson comes down the side of him not through the back of him. If he had gone through the back of him, no problem, give a penalty.

“But when you are talking about a crowd like this in big places when they all shout . . . Maybe I will get the Hibs fans to shout every time somebody goes down. Maybe we will get a penalty because we haven’t had one yet. But that wasn’t the reason we lost the game, I thought the ref was actually good tonight. That incident? Deliberating over whether there was a touch? That was disappointing. But I thought at that point it did kill our momentum of getting into the game a little bit because the boys were starting to play some good stuff. We knew we could cause them some problems and we did. But big Joe Hart is a good keeper and he stood strong, especially in that first half. We go away with no points, that doesn’t change. But we will definitely take some positives.”

Oh celebrates
South Korean Oh Hyeon-gyu scored twice as Celtic sauntered to three points

Brendan Rodgers praised “excellent” Oh Hyeon-gyu after the striker made the most of his rare start by netting a double as leaders Celtic swaggered to Scottish Premiership victory over stunned Hibernian.

The South Korea international – deputising for the rested Kyogo Furuhashi – netted in both halves as his side showed greater urgency than in recent flat performances.

A powerful Matt O’Riley header and a composed Luis Palma penalty – awarded after a controversial VAR check – wrapped up the confident win.

Hibs had their moments and pulled one back with a Christian Doidge tap-in, but stay fifth after being overawed by their opponents’ quality.

The latest Hibernian news

“Oh was excellent,” Celtic manager Rodgers said. “He was a really good reference for the team, his hold-up play, in the box he’s there and obviously his second goal shows he can also run in behind.

“Great strength and then really good composure. I was really pleased with him. He came into the game and did really well.”

Rodgers had promised opportunities for his fringe players and a quick start. The former provided the latter when Mikey Johnston won the corner that allowed the ball to ricochet off an unknowing Oh and into the back of the net inside five minutes.

Buoyed by the early goal and his manager’s vote of confidence, the 22-year-old passed up the opportunity to score a second as he failed to convert Alistair Johnston’s fantastic cross.

After O’Riley had continued his sensational season with a fine header, Hibs tried to fire a rapid response through the pace Elie Youan, though his lofted effort bounced off the chest of goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The visitors somehow made it to the break just two goals down after a minute of madness that culminated with a goalline clearance, but VAR would give Celtic the opportunity to stretch ahead early in the second period.

Lewis Stevenson caught the standing leg of Alistair Johnston in the box, with John Beaton checking the monitor before Palma stepped up to ease the leaders’ recent penalty problem.

Determined to make his mark in a rare start, Oh ensured the headlines were his when he bullied Will Fish out of the way to clear his route to goal and roll the ball beyond David Marshall.

Having stuck to their brave principles in imposing conditions, Nick Montgomery may feel his side merited a goal as Youan’s industry was rewarded with a square ball turned home by Doidge.

Celtic piled on the pressure as they sought added gloss to an already shining win, but Palma’s free-kick, Kyogo’s volley and Tomoki Iwata’s rifled effort failed to find a fifth late on.
Player of the match – Callum McGregor (Celtic)
Callum McGregor
Oh will deservedly soak up the plaudits for his double, but captain Callum McGregor was at his relentless best as his perpetual motion raised the intensity in the manner his manager demanded. He even managed to get a rare rest.
Celtic’s depth on show as Hibs play their way – analysis

After battling away in a rare goalless draw at Easter Road earlier this season, the two clubs once again picked up their mantle as the division’s great entertainers.

Celtic’s last three games have all been plagued by a lack of energy and inventiveness, with Rodgers acutely aware of their deficiencies in his scalding of the players at half-time on Sunday.

Admitting he had never been angrier than he was the at interval in Perth, the Celtic manager will be more pleased with what he saw here.

The likes of Johnston, Oh and Iwata are not only adding competition to the squad, but vitally, they’re actively raising the standards of a team who threatened to sleepwalk in their title defence.

At this point, it should be no surprise that Hibs stuck to their guns and endeavoured to play their brand of football at the home of the champions.

They had flashes – Youan striking the post in the second period the standout moment – without teasing Celtic into the game of fraught madness that may have benefitted the visitors.

It’s just a second league defeat since Montgomery’s arrival, and shouldn’t derail the positive progress they’ve made under the Englishman in recent weeks.
What they said

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “This could have been a really tricky game for us because Hibs are a really good team. I thought our pressure was really good. Overall, delighted with the performance and I thought we were convincing winners.”

Hibernian manager Nick Montgomery: “The most disappointing thing was the manner of the goals we conceded. They never carved us open really, it was our own doing, just poor defending. The first two goals are totally avoidable.”
