Fair play to the hardy souls in The North Stand who sat in the face of that driving wind and rain for 90 minutes, this afternoon.Total commitment!!

2 nil going on 20 nil, 2 belters, should have had 7 penalties, the 23 offsides were close, manager played a blinder, can’t believe Celtic hit the post 9 times…the green brigade effect helped.

Badly missing an individual, ie , a Rogic or Jota , who will take the game by the scruff of the neck. Too many happy to take the ball in and pass it to someone else to make it happen. A frustrating first half but second half was a training session. Should have won by more but at least it’s something today to pick the team up, albeit Livingston are bottom of the table.

El Salto of KDS:
Delighted with the result, I feel that overall we deserved it, and yes, we rode our luck at times. It’s been a while since the Gods have shone on us in Europe. We had a makeshift team against a very decent Feyenoord outfit and we got the result in the end when it would have been easy to fold after conceding a late equaliser.
I thought Welsh and Scales were excellent, AJ had a decent game, but special mention to Callum McGregor who drove the team on into the latter stages where we got our reward. The goal was only possible due to great skill from MOR, what a delivery to big Gus.
We didn’t perform as well in this game as we did against Lazio, and Atletico, yet tonight we got the win, in the previous two home games we did enough to collect more points than we did, and as people have pointed out, that’s where our naiveity comes into play.
Once again we had a referee who had a strange outlook on what constituted a red card, or a second yellow. The guy who gave away the penalty and was booked committed another three yellow card offences, and the guy who scored after being booked for a foul on Taylor, committed a possible straight red offence on Scales ( I think). These are the things we were getting harshly dealt with on earlier in the competition. Even Pedro got away with a bad one in Rome on Turnbull. The ref did give us a penalty mind you, but sometimes you wonder what they are watching. And why did VAR not deem the assault by the goalscorer worth a look. No pasa nada ahora. Great win.

Celtic debrief: Green Brigade fireworks, Kyogo Furuhashi solace, likely Rangers starting XI emerges

Livingston left to rue terrible start to second half as champions prevail

Comment

Celtic’s last match before Christmas was all about returns: the Green Brigade ending its 13-match absence, Daizen Maeda’s first start in since the start of November, Kyogo Furuhashi finding his shooting boots after seven barren outings and three precious points in the title race.

Stung after losing back-to-back Premiership matches and reigniting the title race with Rangers, the league leaders were presented with the perfect present in Livingston, a club that has never won in the east end of Glasgow, currently sitting bottom of the league and having scored just one goal in their past eight matches. This was gift-wrapped for the champions to get back on the horse and they did so with a perfunctory 2-0 victory.

Not that it was entirely straightforward at the beginning. Manager Brendan Rodgers and the supporters watched on with vexed expressions in the first half as Celtic toiled to break down a stubborn wall of black. Livingston defended with the tenacity of lions and restricted Celtic to few chances of note. But they will lament the most awful of starts to the second half, conceding one minute in as Furuhashi broke the deadlock. A second goal from Liam Scales following not long after and the outcome was in no doubt thereafter.

Losing 2-0 to Hearts at home last weekend, on the back of a 2-1 collapse at Kilmarnock, had set alarm bells ringing within the support. Winning against Livi was an absolute necessity, substance over style required. Tougher festive tests await against Dundee on Boxing Day at Dens Park before Rangers visit Celtic Park next Saturday. A restoration of confidence levels is almost as vital as the result.

Rodgers is fully aware of the rancour the recent defeats have caused, coupled with Rangers – who are five points behind in second place and play Motherwell on Christmas Eve – resurgent and winners of the Viaplay Cup. The Celtic manager picked his strongest team for this match, with Maeda making a timely first start since injuring his knee against Atletico Madrid back in the Spanish capital. Celtic are a far better team for his energy, pace and directness. Furuhashi, on an eight-game barren streak, looked more comfortable with his compatriot helping him in attack. Paulo Bernardo was brought in to midfield ahead of David Turnbull and gave the team tempo. It would not be a surprise to see Rodgers deploy this XI in the derby.

Celtic Park has been a quieter place since the Green Brigade were banished from the usual posting in the North Curve. With their ban over, they made quite the din. Pre-match, they marched to Celtic Park with pyro and set off fireworks upon their arrival at the stadium a good hour before kick-off. A banner thanking fellow ultra group The Bhoys for their support during the suspension was also unfurled. The usual ditties were sung. It was a gentle re-introduction ahead of Rangers’ visit.

“Stand up for the champions,” rang around the whole arena in the opening stages as the Celtic fans tried to will their team to an early goal. Wave after wave of Celtic attack crashed against Livingston in the opening ten minutes but their back five held firm, largely thanks to James Penrice denying a Furuhashi effort on the goalline. The early siege came to nothing.
The Green Brigade were back after a 13-game absence.
The Green Brigade were back after a 13-game absence.

Livi manager David Martindale decided to change his goalkeeper, bringing in Jack Hamilton for Shamal George. The former Dundee and Hearts stopper had a nervy moment when spilling Luis Palma’s free-kick into the path of Matt O’Riley, but Scott Pittman came to his rescue. Then Tom Parkes scrambled the ball away after a fine Greg Taylor cross whistled across the goalmouth. Maeda was waiting to pounce.

This was all after 21 minutes but for the rest of the first half, Celtic were largely toothless. Livi carried no threat whatsoever in an attacking sense but they became increasingly comfortable in their surroundings. However, a big blow was dealt when the impressive Parkes blocked a howitzer from Cameron Carter-Vickers that required him to be replaced by Michael Nottingham. They never looked quite the same without him.

Martindale will no doubt have praised his players for their first-half endeavours, which is why the beginning of the second period will cause him great consternation. Most wide defenders should know by now that Palma likes to cut in from the left on to his right foot but he was too easily allowed to do so by Jamie Brandon and Nottingham less than a minute into the restart, allowing the Honduran to put in a havoc-wreaking cross-shot into the box. Furuhashi was quickest to react and stabbed home from close range and Celtic Park heaved a sigh of relief.

Five minutes later, Celtic tied a bow on this. The goal was simple: Palma whipped an inswinging corner and Scales leapt highest to glance the ball into the far corner. Given the last time Livingston scored two goals was in August, Celtic fans could rest easy. A 2-0 defeat can perhaps be claimed as some sort of victory for Livingston, given their already fragile morale did not take a proper battering. Their next two matches against St Johnstone and Motherwell are far more likely to define their season.

The remainder of the match was played at a pedestrian pace. A decent chunk of home fans left early, perhaps to complete their Christmas shopping or escape the incessant rain. Unlike last weekend, there were no boos, no frothing fans fuming at the board, just applause, muted but still, a far happier camp than seven days ago. When they return to their paradise in seven days time, it is likely to be far less straightforward.

Century Bhoy Cam delighted with the win as Scales strikes for Celts

Cameron Carter-Vickers scored on his Celtic debut back in September 2021, and he almost marked his 100th appearance for the Hoops with a goal against Livingston this afternoon (Saturday).

He attacked a Matt O’Riley corner with a powerful header, but he was denied a goal by a superb instinctive save from Jack Hamilton.

Nevertheless, the American internationalist was delighted with the 2-0 victory which saw the Hoops return to winning ways.

Speaking to Celtic TV after the game, Carter-Vickers said: “I thought we played very well and in the first 30 minutes we could have scored three goals. Unfortunately we didn’t but we kept going and we got our reward in the end.

‘It’s definitely a proud moment to make my 100th appearance and I’ve got to say that since I came here I’ve enjoyed my time.’

“I feel that we’ve got a good group of boys. It doesn’t always go our way but we’re always looking to improve and win games of football, and I’m proud to be part of it.”

While Carter-Vickers was denied what would also have been his first goal of the season, his central defensive partner opened his scoring account for the campaign.

Liam Scales headed home Celtic’s second goal of the afternoon in the 51 minute from a Luis Palma corner after Kyogo had opened the scoring after just 25 seconds of the second-half.

And the Irishman, who has been an impressive performer in the Hoops, was delighted with the goal.

“It was a good ball in and I just managed to flick it on and it ended up in the back of the net,” he said, “but as Cam said, in the first-half we could have been two or three up.

‘We showed good mentality to come out in the second half and really go and get those goals that we needed.’

“It was comfortable after that and we could have got a couple more – their keeper made a few good saves – but we’ll take this result.

“We just need to keep the momentum going from this. The performance was good and that’s the level we need to be at every week and we’ll be taking good confidence from this game.”

Celtic Football Club has noted today’s judgement delivered by the European Court of Justice.

The resolution regarding the framework for prior authorization of other competitions refers to outdated UEFA statutes that were already amended in June 2022.

We must be clear that this does not in any way endorse or approve the so-called ‘Super League’ project.

Celtic plays an important, leading role within the European Club Association framework and as a club, we are fully committed to working through the ECA, alongside our fellow European clubs to uphold the values that define European football.

We can only achieve our objectives through the strong partnership ECA enjoys with UEFA.

The wider European football community is not supportive of the ESL, and Celtic, like many other clubs, will continue to promote the interests and protection of football’s broader family through the ECA and UEFA.

Celtic recovered from successive Scottish Premiership losses to see off stubborn Livingston with a quick one-two at the start of the second half.

Kyogo Furuhashi ended a seven-game sequence without scoring by netting a close-range finish and Liam Scales added a splendid header. Luis Palma provided smart crosses for both.

It was a one-sided contest from the first whistle to last, with goalkeeper Jack Hamilton keeping the score down and Celtic opening up a five-point lead over Rangers.

The latest Livingston news

The Ibrox side, who have two games in hand, visit Motherwell on Sunday and the year will end with an Old Firm derby at Celtic Park.

Livingston, five points adrift at the foot of the table, are now without a win in 10 top-flight outings and have scored just twice in that run.

Seeking a response after suffering back-to-back league defeats for the first time in a decade, Celtic were out of the blocks quickly.

The hosts were swarming forward but Livingston deployed a deep, collective block, making it extremely congested in their penalty area.

There were first-half openings for Matt O’Riley, Kyogo and Daizen Maeda but the visitors were in determined mood with a series of last-ditch blocks and tackles.

All of that brave resistance was undone in the opening minute of the second period when Kyogo took advantage of a lapse in concentration to touch home a clever, curling cross from Palma.

Celtic’s advantage was doubled soon after when Scales leapt impressively to steer home a corner from Palma. The defender was going away from goal but managed to twist and power the pacey delivery beyond goalkeeper Hamilton, who was deputising for Shamal George.

Hamilton remained under siege, making a smart save to thwart Cameron Carter-Vickers after Maeda had spurned a good opportunity with his head.

Making just his fourth appearance of the season, Hamilton excelled again, pushing away a late header from Celtic substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu.

Celtic dominate dogged opposition – analysis

With the Green Brigade returning to their corner of the stadium, the atmosphere at Celtic Park was much improved but there were a few grumbles from the home crowd at half-time.

The champions were finding it tough to find space against well-organised and spirited opponents and when they did, Kyogo had a rushed effort cleared by James Penrice and Maeda poked a tentative shot straight at Hamilton.

Livingston were putting bodies on the line with laudable commitment but found themselves behind 28 seconds into the second half and when Scales made it 2-0 five minutes later the result was beyond doubt.

The visitors made no attempt to chase the game, continuing to sit deep and limit the damage, with massive matches against St Johnstone and Motherwell to come.

With the shots tally 22-0 in their favour, Celtic really should have added to their lead. But the returning Maeda did not provide the same threat as fellow winger Palma and the auditions for a Reo Hatate replacement continue without much success, with Paulo Bernardo rather anonymous.

Kyogo was involved much more than he has been of late and his goal, along with Palma’s continuing improvement, will probably please boss Brendan Rodgers most.
What they said

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “We probably didn’t get the goals we deserved, but, from the off, you could see tempo and intensity was much better.

“December can be a grind with a lot of games. It could have been slow but our speed is so important.

“Against a team that was camped in we had to be bright and creative in our play to break them down.”
