Summary

“Brendan came into our dressing room after the game which was class, he’s a class act. He gave a little speech to the lads, said he was delighted with our attitude, they gave us so much respect and took it really seriously. We wanted to face Celtic at pretty much full strength and that’s memories for us to keep for the rest of our lives now.”
– Buckie Thistle manager, Graeme Stewart.

If it’s offside the penalty doesn’t even matter… as we know”
Brendan Rodgers is questioning the order of the VAR process that took place when they were denied an early penalty – despite agreeing with the decision.

Solid game and good performance against a team who didn’t try to boot the Celtic.

Flinchy of KDS:
Professional without being spectacular. When we got out of second gear we played some lovely stuff and mostly had the ball in the back of the net at the end of it. Nice to see some young guys getting a run-out and it’ll be interesting to see what happens with Vata this week. MOR continues to pull the strings.

Would love to see some improvement in Palma’s surface passing. He can lob, chip and cross with some great results but there are far too many over/underhit examples in his repertoire. AJ the opposite.

Torquemada of KDS:
I didn’t see the first three offside goals but the Abada decision looked ridiculous. The feet of the defender in the middle were playing him on but his arm might have been off! The clown on VAR really had to work to make sure the lines didn’t touch. The huns get that goal eight days a week. I enjoyed the hour of it I saw. We played a nice tempo with some lovely one-touch football in awful conditions and Buckie played the game in a great spirit.

Celtic verdict: Buckie far from disgrace themselves in part-timers v big-timers clash as substitute is big talking point

Vata scores after expectation of imminent departure as Highland League side have day in the limelight

From selfies to realities. All the phones-in-the-air capturing of the lifetime-memory afforded by facing up to Celtic in their citadel by Buckie Thistle’s players in the build-up gave way to this merry band soaking up the appreciation of their 2,500-strong Highland travellers at full-time.

It is always the inbetween on such Scottish Cup occasions that can dilute the delights of the ultimate part-timers jousting with the ultimate big-timers, as the luck of the draw dissolves five tiers between them. Buckie far from disgraced themselves, even as they were beaten 5-0 in the fourth round tie. Heck, Premiership Aberdeen were on the receiving end of a 6-0 in this arena not so long ago.

But even if it took 25 minutes for Celtic to break the deadlock, it would be patronising not to acknowledge the utter mismatch of a contest where Brendan Rodgers’ men had 85 per cent possession. And, as well as the five legitimate counters, the ball in the net a further four times only for the flag to be raised and VAR to confirm the assistants’ alertness – at the only cup encounter where the system was in operation over the weekend.
Luis Palma, Odin Thiago Holm and Luis Palma were among the goalscorers as Celtic took down Buckie Thistle 5-0.
Luis Palma, Odin Thiago Holm and Luis Palma were among the goalscorers as Celtic took down Buckie Thistle 5-0.

At least Graeme Stewart’s men were disciplined in playing their last line, as Celtic – at full strength except for captain Callum McGregor being rested – sought to pick up their rhythm on their return post-winter break by turboing down the flanks. Oddly, it was Celtic’s fifth and final goal, netted in the 75th minute, that was most intriguing. A consequence of the identity of the scorer being Rocco Vata, who many had assumed was in the club’s departure lounge. The attacker had never featured under Rodgers but given the final half hour, he made the most of his outing by turning in from point-blank range a low driven cross by Miky Johnston before squandering an opportunity to double his tally when he attempted to round the keeper. Beyond his contribution and midfielder Daniel Kelly being handed his senior debut late on, it was largely about his tried and trusted personnel tuning up for the tougher assignments to come.

Liel Abada will have been supplied with a reminder of the need to look along the line when running in behind, an offside flag denying him a penalty after he was taken out in the box in the early minutes before he seemed involved in practically all the other offside ghost goals. He played his part in the first one to count, in playing through Paolo Bernardo to see the midfielder continue his scoring streak with a third striker in four games delivered courtesy of the daintest chip over keeper Stuart Knight.

Odin Thiago Holm then pounced at the edge of the area to carve out another goal on the half-hour mark. Before Joe Hart proved villainous to Josh Peters – cousin of Celtic’s Stephen Welsh – and Buckie’s hopes of a special moment in denying the forward with his outstretched leg after he found himself clean through. Shortly after the restart Luis Palma let fly in cutting in off the right to beat the Buckie keeper with a flashing drive, before Kyogo Furuhashi swept in from an Abada low diagonal that eluded Knight. None of which could spoil the day of the keeper or his team-mates.

Celtic reaction: Mischievous response on VAR penalty similar to Rangers clash, Rocco Vata situation, sushi and Buckie fines

It was a straightforward Scottish Cup afternoon for holders – except for disallowed goals and checks

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers offered up a mischievous response to a third-minute penalty award for his team being overturned by a VAR offside call in his team’s 5-0 thumping of Buckie Thistle in their fourth round Scottish Cup tie.

Clearly making a veiled allusion to the similar circumstances that surrounded the non-penalty award for Alistair Johnston handball in Celtic’s recent derby victory over Rangers – which would have been negated by an earlier offside – the Northern Irishman questioned why there had even been a check for Liel Abada being felled in the box, a result of the winger having strayed offside in the lead-up to the incident. Indeed, Rodgers clearly allowed himself a wink when he concluded his assessment of the frustration over the VAR “protocols” on an afternoon when his team had the ball in the net four times before the assistant’s flag was raised.

“It’s just unfortunate,” Rodgers said of these moments. “I think the frustrating one was the penalty one that was looked at. It shouldn’t be looked at: it’s offside. But they had to for some reason, it’s protocol, according to the fourth official. They had to look to see if it’s a penalty first before they look to disallow it because it’s offside, which just seems ridiculous. If it’s offside then the penalty doesn’t even matters. As we know …”

The major surprise of the occasion in which Rodgers fielded a full-strength side – apart from resting midfielder and captain Callum McGregor – was the last half hour run out given to Rocco Vata. The teenage attacker has been linked with all manner of moves in this transfer window as his current contract enters its final six months, and wasn’t expected to be glimpsed again in the senior Celtic set-up. Instead, he bagged his first goal at this level in a cameo wherein he could have easily scored a hat-trick on replacing Kyogo Furuhashi.

“Young players have to earn the right and the likes of Rocco there has been a lot of noise around him but he is a very young player and he has to earn the opportunity,” Rodgers said. “I’ve given many young players an opportunity in my career. I like Rocco. He has qualities. He is strong, he’s aggressive and from 25 yards in he wants to get goals. You can see even when he came on he got his goals and he had another few opportunities. That’s good for him, he got a taste for it.”

Buckie manager Graeme Stewart revelled in the taste of the big time his players earned – the once in a hundred year event for the Highland League club , he hoped would be replicated – though he joked their could be price to pay for some of his charges. “I thought the attitude was tremendous, in the dressing room the boys are out on their feet and cramping up,” Stewart said, not wanting to take that sentiment too far owing to the scoreline. “Celtic gave us so much respect and took it seriously in playing a full team, and that was good. We would rather have played against that than a second-string and the guys can keep that memory forever. None of the players were in our changing room after the game; they were all in the Celtic changing room.

“Celtic were brilliant, taking them in – though I noticed Celtic had sushi and nicer food than us. Brendan Rodgers was brilliant, he gave a speech in our changing room and praised our attitude, and said come in [to their dressing room] .They gave us strips, signed strips, and they didn’t have to do that. One or two even asked for our strips, which I’m not happy about. I said to the guys they are getting fined now because they cost us 50 quid.”

‘We’re not here just to be tourists’

Celtic v Buckie Thistle (16:00)

Buckie Thistle boss Graeme Stewart tells BBC Scotland: “This has probably been a bit more special than we thought. We never expected to come in with the bus and have a lot of fans clapping us in.

“I have only been to the ground once and it’s a lot bigger than I remember. But we’re not here just to be tourists. I think the players are really enjoying this occasion, it’s special.

“The bus picked us up in Aberdeen and there were a few fans to see us off and I think they were the same people that clapped us off the bus at the ground today. It’s been great for the community. It’s a great occasion and we are just going to enjoy it.

“We are delighted Celtic aren’t knocking about. Probably the strongest team they could’ve put out. They’re not taking this lightly, Celtic have definitely given us the respect.

“The hardest part of being a manager is picking the 11 but you have to do it. We want to stay in the game and make it difficult. We don’t want to just sit and defend for 90 minutes and when we can I want us to attack.”

Kyogo Furuhashi scored Celtic’s third of a fruitful first half

Holders Celtic powered into the last 16 as Highland League Buckie Thistle’s Scottish Cup adventure ended on a sodden Glasgow afternoon.

The fifth-tier side from the north east of Scotland, cheered on by around 2,500 travelling fans, had drawn the plum tie as top-flight sides entered the competition.

And they held the Scottish champions for 25 minutes before eventually succumbing 5-0 at Celtic Park.

Paulo Bernardo dinked the opener, Odin Holm netted his first Celtic goal with a neat finish and Kyogo Furuhashi made it three before half-time.

Luis Palma and Rocco Vata added further strikes in the second period of a contest that also included four disallowed Celtic goals, as Brendan Rodgers maintained his 100% winning record in the Scottish Cup.

The draw for the fifth round takes place later on Sportscene on BBC Scotland and iPlayer, with the programme starting at 19:15 GMT.

The tie was about the occasion for Buckie, who came close to reaching the SPFL play-offs last season but had only played three times since the third round at the end of November due to weather-related call-offs.

Their association with Stephen King did not curse them to a nightmare akin to a passage from one of the horror author’s novels. Rather they made their hosts work for their goals and gave their supporters a memorable, if inclement, day out.

The persistent rain threatened to spoil the spectacle and a lengthy VAR delay also dampened enthusiasm early on.

The game at Celtic Park was the only fourth-round tie to use the review system and it was called upon to discern whether Liel Abada had been fouled in the Buckie box. That proved to be a moot point with offside against the winger the decision that ultimately prevailed.

Part-time Buckie continued to play an effective offside line. A Greg Taylor cross turned in by a defender was ruled out and Kyogo and Bernardo were also frustrated when converting crosses from a flagged Abada.

The visitors’ resistance was broken when Matt O’Riley released Bernardo, who chipped the onrushing Stuart Knight for a third goal in four games, and Holm finished off an intricate move with a strike off the left post.

It was always going to be a tall order for Buckie, even more so when two down but, after Liam Scales had headed against their crossbar, Josh Peters found himself in on goal and the forward’s shot was blocked by Joe Hart’s foot.

Celtic’s typically ruthless response was an Abada delivery and Kyogo finish from close range. This time it counted and reminded home fans what they missed during Abada’s injury absence in the first half of the season.

Palma got in on the act after the break when he cut inside on the right and beat Knight at his near post.

Abada was foiled by the offside flag again when he netted from the right and, at the other end, Peters’ claim for a penalty following Scales’ challenge left the officials unmoved.

The sight of Kyogo and Abada making way for Vata and Mikey Johnston might have had the Buckie players breathing a sigh of relief.

But the substitutes combined for the fifth goal, Johnston getting to the bye-line and squaring for youngster Vata to score his maiden Celtic goal.
What they said

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “It was good from both teams. The players continued where they left off before the break. The intensity was good. We scored some very good goals and just were offside in a few more.

“Rocco, great for him to get his first goal. If he keeps a discipline and can keep improving, he may have a chance to be a Celtic player.”

Buckie Thistle manager Graeme Stewart: “If I’m being critical, I’m not happy with a few of the goals but we’re playing against Celtic so we have to be realistic. You could see how hard they were working.

“We’d like some more of it, this week’s been great. Not just this week, the last five, six weeks has been fantastic. It’s been fun. Going out there playing, it’s exciting. The atmosphere was fantastic.”
