jbj71 of KDS:
Second half was just utter garbage there are no other words to describe that performance.
Garbage on the park and garbage in the dugout.
Like for like substitutions did nothing for the team nor the way the game was going.
The fact that the manager couldn’t be arsed using the brake in play to try and either rally his team nor send on instructions was a particular highlight of the garbage I’m talking about though I suppose being out coached by Derek Whatshisname must be pretty embarrassing for someone like Rodgers.
Yet again our captain did a lot of arm waving and running about tackling no one to no great effect while the other two midfielders obviously felt playing Ross County was below their station in life and contributed next to nothing though Bernardo did manage to miss an open goal from ten yards.
If today was a one off then people wouldn’t be complaining but the sad fact is it isn’t indeed it is becoming the norm for our home for this season.

Mozza of KDS:
A body language expert would have had a field day with that half hearted guff today.
Kyogo and Abada in particular (both favourites of mine) moping about with their faces tripping them, Bernebei looking like someone who has no concept of “defending” or “passing”, Turnbull who has never been blessed with pace being left for dead three times during a short cameo, Palma not even bothering to take an important penalty properly.
I’ve rarely seen a game where we’ve passed to ball to the opposition so often.
Horrible and worrying performance. I sincerely hope it was a one off.

@Highland__paddy That was like the bad old days , a one nil victory at home in a title race and some fans booing at full time.

T H E ~ S H A M R O C K  @TheShamrock1888 · 2h Yet another abject performance at home after displays such as 0-0 to St Johnstone and 1-1 to Motherwell. For a supposed elite manager, Rodgers seems incapable of coming up with a coherent game plan or inspiring/challenging players to do better. 6 months in, not improving.

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · 2h You’d think Celtic were 15pts behind with how downbeat Rodgers sounds here. He’s never been a yes man, that’s what caused all the problems & tensions in 2018 Now he’s back, desperate for some kind of redemption. It feels like he doesn’t want to be seen as rocking the boat again.

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland Celtic averaged 3 goals a game last season, unusually high & unrealistic to expect to reach every year, but they’re averaging just 2 goals a game after 32 games in 2023-24, which is low, they’re 32 goals down from this stage last season but ~18 goals down from a normal season. Celtic are top of the league, but miles off the standards they set themselves in the last couple of years. They don’t play with confidence, the swagger is gone, everything on the park is so micromanaged, no pace, no flair, and no real enjoyment. There’s just constant tension. Never understood why Kyogo never takes pens, best goalscorer at the club, I thought the one penalty that he did take, even though he missed it, his technique was good, was just unlucky off the post, shouldn’t have been one & done, particularly without a specialist in the squad.

Everything Celtic @aboutceltic  | 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 // 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝟭-𝟬 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 Well that was… meh  Three points is three points but a very uninspiring performance after taking the lead with the first minute. Got away with it a little at the end. Additions needed, fast.

CELTIC restored their five point lead over Rangers at the top of the cinch Premiership table this afternoon with a narrow and hard-fought win over second-bottom Ross County at Parkhead.

Their city rivals, who still have a game in hand against County to play at Ibrox, had narrowed the gap to just two when they recorded a 1-0 triumph over St Mirren in Paisley in the early kick-off.

However, Brendan Rodgers’ side overcame Derek Adams’ team by an identical margin thanks to a rare Alistair Johnston goal after just 54 seconds.

The margin of victory would have been far more comfortable – but Luis Palma had two penalties saved by County keeper George Wickens in the first-half.

It proved to be a nervous afternoon for the Scottish champions.

Their first January transfer window signing Nicolas Kuhn came on to make his debut after half-time and made a positive early impression. The home supporters, though, had little else to cheer during the course of 90 tense minutes.

Jordan White could have equalised in injury-time when he was clean through on the Celtic goal, but the County substitute had his shot saved by Joe Hart. There were a few boos at the end of proceedings.

Here are five talking points from the encounter.

Johnston off the mark at home.

The Canadian internationalist has established himself as an automatic first team starter at Celtic since moving to Scotland after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and become a firm fans’ favourite.

However, the right back is not a regular scorer and can contribute far more on that front. He had only been on target once before today. He found the target in a rout of St Miren at the SMISA Stadium last season.

He clearly enjoyed netting for the first time at Parkhead even if his strike in the first minute took a wicked deflection off of County centre half Will Nightingale before it spun past Wickens. It would be harsh to begrudge the defender his moment of glory. His shot was, after all, on target.

The Herald: Celtic defender Alistair JohnstonHis goal looked set to open the floodgates. But it proved to be the difference between the teams when the final whistle blew.

Bernabei start

With Greg Taylor being ruled out for a few weeks by a calf strain, the lesser spotted Alexandro Bernabei came in to the Celtic side at left back.

There were high hopes for the Argentinian defender when he was signed from Lanus in his homeland for a £3.7m fee back in the summer of 2022. Fans hoped the South American could help elevate them to a new level both domestically and in Europe.

However, the 23-year-old has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons, like being arrested in Glasgow city centre and charged with drink driving or sleeping in and missing a team meeting, since.

Rodgers admitted the player “hasn’t had the best time of it” and stressed he wanted to see “his best form” when he spoke to BBC Radio Scotland before kick-off.

Could he grasp a rare opportunity – this was just his fifth appearance of the season and his first start since last May – and show he has a long-term future in the East End of Glasgow?

Bernabei did well to burst forward into the visitors’ box and play a dangerous ball across goal before the opener. He also threaded a nice pass through to Callum McGregor before the penalty award. He then skipped in between James Brown and Brandon Khela and created an opening in the second-half.

He has to continue in the same vein to justify the sizeable sum it took to secure his services and keep Taylor out when his club mate is available again.

Palma penalties

The Honduran winger was given the chance to atone for a weak attempt from 12 yards out which George Wickens kept out after a VAR check showed the goalkeeper had been guilty of encroachment.

But the wide man’s second effort was every bit as bad and Wickens denied him with an almost identical save.

Palma has converted from the spot against Aberdeen, Hibernian and Feyenoord this term. It may, though, be time for somebody else in the Celtic side to take responsibility for penalties. His misses kept County in the game.

450 not out

Celtic captain Callum McGregor set another major career milestone this afternoon when he took to the field to play his 450th game for his boyhood heroes.

The midfielder angered County forward Simon Murray in the first-half. His opponent felt he went down far too easily when he challenged for the ball and lashed out after the spot kick had been awarded.

The Herald: But Adams’ men struggled to get close to the Scotland internationalist thereafter. He performed with all of his usual assurance and authority in the middle of the park and ensured his side saw off spirited rivals. He was a deserved recipient of the Man of the Match award.

Who knows how many more matches McGregor has for Celtic ahead of him?

County fight

This loss extended the Highland club’s winless run to six matches. But they can take great heart from their overall showing. If they keep playing like this they will stay up come May.

Wickens, who joined them on loan from Fulham this month, was superb. And they certainly had their opportunities to level. Not least when Nightingale got on the end of a Yan Dhanda corner and struck the Celtic crossbar with a header.

Few teams have competed so well with their hosts at Parkhead this season. They can go into their massive match against Livingston at Almondvale on Tuesday night with high hopes of taking three important points.

Celtic reaction: Brendan Rodgers reacts to crowd’s jeers, takes aim at pitch and says numerous areas being looked at for transfers

Celtic manager also confirms switch of penalty taker following Palma’s double miss

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers made no attempt to gloss over the inescapable disconnect between the club and fanbase in demonstrating extraordinary candour as he reacted to the jeering that greeted the final whistle for his side’s unconvincing 1-0 win over Ross County.

It was a sixth straight victory of the Scottish champions – a sequence during which they have conceded only one goal – but the stultifying nature of it did not prove acceptable to a support already approaching the end of their tethers over the lack of transfer activity across the window beyond the acquisition of Nicolas Kuhn. The winger was handed his debut as a second half substitute as Celtic toiled to put away Highland opponents on a surface that Rodgers rubbished as a “more a field than a pitch”, as he made no absolutely no pitch for more positive backing from the stands.

“I’ve had that since I’ve been here,” Rodgers said of the booing at full-time. “If it’s not the result, it’s me. If not me, the board. So, all we can do as a team is win games, and try to improve and develop – and win. That’s what the team has done. The team and ourselves as staff work hard every day together, and that’s how we will continue to be. If it falls below the expectation, then we’ll do everything we can to be better.”

Celtic’s pitch has patently fallen entirely below what it is entitled to be expected of a club of their standing. The Northern Irishman did not sugercoat on a day their penalty taking also proved sub-standard. Rodgers stated that Luis Palma would be removed from such duties after he not only had a spot-kick saved by County goalkeeper George Wickens approaching the half hour, but then also a retake he was afford after a VAR review had spotted encroachment from the man in the County goal, who saved both efforts down to his right.

The Celtic manager seemed less troubled by the Honduran’s aberrations than by the struggles that a rutted surface are presenting for his personnel. “When you speak to the players and opposition it’s a bit of a surprise,” he said. “But you look at [Liam] Scales’ pass, it comes off the toe and popped off, [Matt] O’Riley’s popped up and the fans get anxious but that’s the pitch. Then Cal [Callum McGregor] gets ready to take a shot and it pops up and nearly goes up towards the top tier. We have to deal with it. I don’t know why [the pitch is like that].

“I know speaking to the staff it has been the situation over the last few years. It’s something as a club we need to address, as a flagship club in Scotland and especially with how we want to play. It’s not overloaded with games – it’s more a field than a pitch. That’s the reality, but however it sits we have to get the job done and thankfully we did that.”

Palma’s inability to get the job given to him as penalty taker, made for his second and third misses – though the latest two an be considered the same spot-kick essentially – meant Celtic have now missed four of their 11 such awards this season. “It’s something that’s worked on in training but you’ve got to be able to do that in the game so, when you miss two, we’ll have to look at another taker.”

Rodgers didn’t sound exactly assured that the further reinforcements craved by the support – and privately him – would be recruited before the window closes next week. “There are a number of areas we’re looking at,” he said. “I can only concentrate on the players I have here. There are areas we are looking to improve on. Hopefully there’s movement, that’s the plan. Getting that player in who can help our level and let us develop. Hopefully that’s the case.”

Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers at odds with Derek Adams’ assessment – ‘it’s a challenge we all relish’

Ahead of welcoming County to Parkhead, Celtic boss responds to Staggies counterpart’s withering comments on Scottish game
By Graeme Macpherson

Derek Adams’ negative comments on the state of the SPFL won’t have gone down well among those paid to promote our game, but his opposite number on Saturday afternoon, Brendan Rodgers, was happy to paint a much more positive picture from his own experiences.

Adams was highly critical of both his own team and the standard of the game in general after returning for a third spell as Ross County manager late last year, believing his former club, Morecambe, to be “100 times better” than what he had witnessed back on this side of the border. Rodgers, though, disagreed with the assessment that Scottish football is in a state of disrepair and decline, believing his Celtic side face a challenge in the Premiership no matter who they are facing, even if County travel to Glasgow today without a win to their name in five games.

“Derek probably has more experience of the game up here than me,” he said. “But he’s also experienced enough to know what he’s walked into having come back up here. I haven’t seen much of the comments. I hear little bits and pieces. But for me there are some very good players up here. Not only that, this is a level where a lot of players who have played at the very highest level in the Premier League, and we’ve seen it before, can’t cope with the football up here.
Celtic take on Ross County at Parkhead.
Celtic take on Ross County at Parkhead.

“This is a real challenge in Scotland. I’ve said it before that you’ve near enough got the four leagues in England in one league. You’ve got big games, big clubs and big intensity. Then there are other games you should dominate. But those games are never easy. I always think back to Liverpool at Mansfield when I was there. That was a tough game for us. Those games are never easy. I think up here there are no easy games. You always have to be ready and be prepared. He knows Scottish football a lot better than me, Derek. I can only speak from my experience from the first time and now. It’s always a challenge. It’s a challenge we all relish.”

Celtic return to league action on Saturday afternoon after the winter break with their lead at the top shorn to five points following Rangers’ midweek win at Hibs. That advantage could be reduced further to just two should Philippe Clement’s side defeat St Mirren in the lunchtime kick-off but Liam Scales revealed Celtic’s targets for the second half of the season won’t be affected by what happens elsewhere.

“We are ready to kick on now,” said the defender. “Obviously there were a couple of negatives in the first half of the season, like not winning the League Cup, and maybe we could have got more results in Europe, where our home performances were good but we struggled a bit away. We looked at all of that and realised there’s room to improve in the second half of the season. Setting challenges is a big part of what the manager does and he’s very good at it. As players we need to take it on board and really improve. Obviously we want to win the league and the cup. It’s more about doing the right things every week and that will eventually win us trophies.”

Celtic goal
Alistair Johnston’s shot deflected past George Wickens to give Celtic all three points

Celtic “made it more difficult” for themselves with another penalty miss as they restored their five-point lead in the Scottish Premiership thanks to a narrow win over Ross County.

Alistair Johnston scored what proved to be the winner in the first minute with a shot from the edge of the box that took a wicked deflection and spun into the corner of the net.

Celtic could and should have scored more on an afternoon where Luis Palma had a spot-kick and retake saved – Celtic’s fourth penalty miss from 10 this season – but Brendan Rodgers’ side were far from their best.

The win maintains Celtic’s five-point lead over Rangers, who have a game in hand, while County stay 11th.

“These can be tough games and we maybe made it a bit more difficult when we miss the penalties,” manager Rodgers said.

“We made a great start with the early goal, which was really good, we force errors from them to get the penalties and I think the penalties maybe took a bit out the crowd and the team as well.”

Rodgers’ opposite number Derek Adams would have hoped for a response after such a poor showing last time out in the cup defeat by Partick Thistle, but it took only 56 seconds for Celtic to hit the front.

Johnston let fly after Liel Abada’s shot was blocked, and his shot crept over the line to leave County goalkeeper George Wickens helpless and give the hosts a dream start.

It could have got even better just minutes later when Matt O’Riley’s shot was parried into Paulo Bernardo’s path, but the Portuguese midfielder somehow put his effort over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Celtic continued to press and were given a golden chance to double their lead when Simon Murray tripped Callum McGregor in the box.

However, the league leaders’ penalty woes this season continued, as Palma’s weak spot-kick was easily saved by Wickens.

A video assistant referee check showed several County players encroaching, and a retake was ordered, but Palma could not take advantage, with his second effort also saved by Wickens.

The missed chances almost came back to haunt Celtic, but Will Nightingale could only head Yan Dhanda’s corner against the bar after Joe Hart found himself in no-man’s land.

In the second half Celtic continued to dominate possession, but they struggled to open County up from open play.

The longer it stayed at 1-0, the more you sensed there might be a sting in the tail, and the more grumbles came from the stands.

Indeed, County did have late chances to snatch a point, but Jordan White’s tame effort was easily saved by Hart, and Josh Sims could only spoon his shot over the bar from close range.

On his 450th Celtic appearance, McGregor kept things ticking over in midfield, and did his utmost to drive his team on. He undoubtedly sets the standards for Rodgers’ side
Celtic grind it out against improved County – analysis

When Celtic went in front as early as they did, against a side who have been as poor as County have recently, one would have been forgiven for expecting a procession.

It was far from that. Abada and Palma had cross after cross cut out, and the less said about Palma’s penalties the better.

Perhaps a bigger concern for Celtic was that Kyogo Furuhashi was a passenger. The Japan striker is Celtic’s biggest attacking threat, but he had just 16 touches in the game. They have to find a way to utilise his talents more.

Still, a win is a win, and Celtic are keeping Rangers at arm’s length in the title race.

For County, Adams will take plenty of positives from this performance. His team played with structure and discipline, caused problems from set-pieces, and posed a threat on the break when they they were able to turn over possession.

They now have to find a way to deliver that level on a regular basis. If they do, they should be able to climb the table and alleviate any fears of relegation.
What the managers said

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “The second half was much better. We created opportunities but didn’t take them and didn’t concede many, but in any game that’s 1-0 there can be a bit of anxiety, but the players handled it well.”

Ross County manager Derek Adams: “It doesn’t happen many times that a team comes here and has such good opportunities. We hit the bar, Joe Hart makes a great save towards the end and, on another day, we could have done better.

“I thought my players were magnificent today. Their work ethic – in and out of possession, they were very good. To come here and cause the Celtic crowd to panic a wee bit was what we tried to do.”
