  • Lawwell pointed out Celtic “resisted strong interest in our players from other clubs” and had committed £23.9m in player investment, including extending the contracts of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liel Abada, Matt O’Riley, Anthony Ralston and Reo Hatate, from June to the end of the January transfer window. Celtic’s interim report showed a £2.6m profit from transfers, an increase of £800,000 from the same period in 2022 – mainly related to the sale of centre-half Carl Starfelt to Celta Vigo – while player acquisitions cost £12.9m – £7.2m more than 12 months previously. Lawwell pointed to a revenue increase of 11% to £85.2m as Celtic benefited from Champions League qualification in two consecutive seasons. “A significant portion of this revenue increase was reinvested into football wages and salaries,” he said.
  • There was also a £1.9m increase in profit from trading to £32m, although profit before taxation was down £3.7m to £30.3m, while the cash balance was down £5m to £67.3m from the end of the last financial year.

Summary

Brendan Rodgers: “We had to show our mentality and belief as a team and that’s what we said at half-time. We ran out deserved winners in the second half. The key thing for us is to stay together. There’s a story being written about this club, but we will write our own story.

Sky Sports: “Luis Palma makes sure of three points that will mean so much to Brendan Rodgers because they are right bang in the middle of an enthralling title race.” “Joe Hart with a top class save! What a game!” Motherwell come close to regaining the lead but Lennon Miller’s header is kept out. ”
On Adam Idah’s second goal in the win over Motherwell!”A 𝐡𝐮𝐠𝐞 goal for Celtic, a 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 goal for Celtic!”

Chris Sutton @chris_sutton73 Sensational second half from Adam Idah. Two brilliant, brilliant finishes. Yang excellent wide on the right and gave some much needed threat and quality. Celtic cannot continue to play for just 45 minutes every game… Motherwell’s Lennon Miller looks a player…

JoeBloggsCity of TheCelticWiki: Don’t let the scoreline fool you, this was a dreadful performance with Celtic winning at the death with two very late goals in six minutes of injury time. The first half was atrocious, and in fairness Motherwell very much deserved their lead at the break. They even had a goal ruled correctly off-side after just a couple of minutes. The substitutes made all the difference today, and Idah has become an unlikely hero for Celtic at this moment. His header for the first goal was sublime. Carter Vickers was immense in that second half, just his presence on the pitch made all the difference. Many others have heeped praise on Yang and Palma for their contribution, but really more is expected from this team. Celtic just about hanging on in there for this league campaign.

SaMule of KDS: First half was as bad as we’ve been all season, and we’ve been really bad at times this season. Second half was much better, especially once Yang was on. Can’t fault Maeda for effort, but eff me the guy makes Sebo look like a lethal finisher. Scales and McGregor both need dropped, they won’t be. There may be a reason Kuhn didn’t make it at Ajax or Bayern. We can still win the league. This has to be the springboard for the rest of the season. It’s going to take years off us all whatever happens.

E-Tims @ETimsNet ·  FT MWell 1 #Celtic 3 Fantastic turnaround from Celtic. Big Bravo. We looked down and out after an insipid 1st half. Great character shown to never stop when clearly form and confidence was against us. There’s a title fight to be had. The team showed they want it. It needs all of us to unite and fight together. If, CCV can remain fit until the end of the season it makes a massive difference. If, we can see the MOR who was so good up until winter break it galvanises our play. If, we get Reo back for run in it takes our play to another level. Lots of ifs but we’ve got to keep fighting. AJ back fit is a massive improvement at right back. Iwata now back (played well today) adds more options in mid. Idah with 4 goals to his name already gives us added attacking threat.

Don’t write off Celtic just yet as new hero emerges in another title race late show

Idah and his fellow substitutes dig champions out of huge hole against Motherwell

Don’t write Celtic off just yet in this title race. Not by a long way. They showed the ultimate trait of champions by netting twice in stoppage time to clinch a hugely important 3-1 win over Motherwell at Fir Park.

Level with the Steelmen going into six minutes of stoppage time, boy did Celtic needed a winner. Rangers had thumped Hearts 5-0 a day earlier to move five points clear at the top of the Premiership. Eroding that lead by a point would not do. Momentum is with the Ibrox club. But just like he did earlier this month, up stepped Adam Idah, the on-loan Norwich striker who already has a knack of scoring late goals. His penalty winner floored Hibs and he slid home on 94 minutes here to deliver the sucker punch to a resolute Motherwell.

Idah came on as a half-time substitute with Celtic, at that point a goal down and toiling for inspiration in attack, and within six minutes he made in impact with a fine header to level. His power and strength caused Motherwell far more problems than Kyogo Furuhashi did. The Japanese appeared to hurt his shoulder and was replaced by the Irishman at the break. The Japanese may play second fiddle to Idah at this rate.

Idah’s timing and composure to slot home a low Alistair Johnston cross in stoppage time sent the previously tense and nervous Celtic fans behind the goal totally tonto. There was still time for Luis Palma to net a precise low delivery from Yang Hjun-jun two minutes later to add gloss to the scoreline. Goal difference could be crucial in this bid for the championship. With 11 league games left – of which two are Old Firm derbies – Rangers lead by two points and have superior goal difference by six.

Celtic can thank their substitutes for overcoming Motherwell. Idah, Yang, Palma and Cameron Carter-Vickers all came on in the second half and immediately enhanced Celtic. Furuhashi blew Celtic’s best chance of the first half when firing straight at Liam Kelly after a nice Matt O’Riley pass, although his compatriot Daizen Maeda managed to trump that by putting a diving header wide from close range later in the match. Nicolas Kuhn did nothing to influence proceedings on the left wing. The German looked lost in Lanarkshire. Carter-Vickers, on late for Maik Nawrocki, immediately added more composure to a previously wobbly Celtic defence.

Celtic were bang average in the first half, sloppy with their passing. Motherwell took the lead on 42 minutes when Blair Spittal deliciously curled home following neat play from the impressive 17-year-old midfielder Lennon Miller. The hosts, who remain in ninth place, put a lot into this match and both strikers, Theo Bair and Jack Vale, were pests to Celtic. But they were forced so deep by Celtic and could not batten down the hatches sufficiently and stay concentrated under incessant pressure. Just like the last time Celtic came to Fir Park, in September last year, they were undone in added-on time.

What this win will do for Celtic now remains to be seen. Their title credentials and ability to handle pressure has been questioned scrupulously. Yet that is nine wins and two draws in 11 games. For now it is about keeping pace with Rangers. Dundee are up next, at home on Wednesday. Celtic can return to Parkhead with a spring in their step, for their second-half performance was a reminder of what they can do, and what they can achieve.

Celtic scored twice in stoppage time as a comeback victory at Motherwell moved them back to two points behind Rangers in the Premiership title race.

Adam Idah completed a double on 94 minutes, adding to his smart header at the start of the second half.

Fellow substitute Luis Palma added a tap-in while the visiting fans were still celebrating that late reprieve.

Blair Spittal had curled in a fantastic shot at the end of a first half the hosts had much the better of.

The champions, who had drawn two of their three previous league outings, looked spooked during that period but found some much-needed urgency to dominate the second half.

And Idah was the hero, replacing Kyogo Furuhashi at the interval and giving Celtic a real presence up front.

The on-loan Norwich striker levelled the game when rising well to steer in a Greg Taylor cross.

Both he and Daizen Maeda went close with further headers as the champions laid siege to the home penalty area and that pressure finally paid when the 23-year-old met an Alistair Johnston pass to slot low into the corner.

Yang Hyun-Jun, who also helped liven up Celtic from the bench, then teed up Palma for the simplest of finishes.

Motherwell who remain ninth, four points ahead of Ross County in the play-off place, were running on fumes in the closing stages, dealing with an onslaught.

The home side played with confidence in the first half, epitomised by the lovely footwork from teenager Lennon Miller to set up Spittal’s cracking finish from the edge of the penalty area.

Theo Bair had an early effort ruled out for offside and Miller was denied by a good Joe Hart save at 1-1 as they found gaps in a Celtic backline that has gone four matches without a clean sheet.

Celtic use wings more wisely to gain upper hand – analysis

On their previous visit to Fir Park, Celtic found a 97th-minute winner. That goal from Matt O’Riley moved them seven points clear of Rangers after seven games.

Now the champions are playing catch up, having lost just twice all season. Draws have been costly as the Ibrox team have rattled off eight league wins in a row.

Midway through the six minutes added on it appeared another share of the points was on the cards for Brendan Rodgers’ side but a change of attitude and approach eventually swung the match in their favour.

While they were sluggish in the first half, the tempo increased markedly and the Idah change was not the only telling substitution.

Yang was much livelier than Nicholas Kuhn, while Maeda upped his level as Celtic worked the wings much more effectively in the second half.

Motherwell competed commendably but were overwhelmed by the sheer volume of crosses coming in.

What they said

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “We had to show our mentality and belief as a team and that’s what we said at half-time. We ran out deserved winners in the second half.

“The key thing for us is to stay together. There’s a story being written about this club, but we will write our own story.”

Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell: “For 94 minutes I thought we were bang at it. The narrative will be that Celtic have come and turned us over but that’s anything but what I saw in the game.

“I think we possibly could have been further ahead in the first half. We came up short with our concentration yet again.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers saddened by sexism allegations as Jane Lewis breaks silence over ‘good girl’ remark

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has defended himself against allegations of sexism after the BBC reporter he referred to as a “good girl” during a terse post-match interview insisted that she took no offence to the remark.

Jane Lewis was interviewing Rodgers for the BBC Sportsound radio programme following Celtic’s 3-1 win over Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership at Fir Park on Sunday when the incident took place. Rodgers was asked by Ms Lewis to clarify his comments when he stated that “the story has already been written about this group, but we will write our own story”, in reference to the title race.

Ms Lewis asked: “You don’t want to give us a bit more insight into that and what you mean?” But a clearly irked Rodgers repeatedly said “no” before adding: “You know exactly what I mean”. When Ms Lewis continued to press for an explanation Rodgers promptly ended the interview with the phrase: “Okay? Done. Good girl.” Ms Lewis then laughed and told listeners: “There you go, he’s done”.

The remark sparked complaints of sexism from both the Scottish Feminist Network and For Women Scotland – with one spokesperson branding the Celtic boss a “dinosaur” – but Lewis has spoken out and insisted that she does believe Rodgers intended to offend her. Ms Lewis said on Tuesday: “Clearly, the interview on Sunday has become a talking point. I don’t believe there was any offence meant by Brendan Rodgers – and for my part there was none taken.”

The Celtic manager has also broken his silence, admitting he was “saddened” by the episode and blaming society in general for blowing the issue out of proportion. He also revealed he had reached out to Ms Lewis and the pair “had a laugh” about the incident.

“Sadly for me you’re thinking in society now they’re looking to find something that is offensive to pin onto people,” Rodgers said. “Since I’ve been up here, I think any journalist, reporter or anyone in media… I’ve always based my life on relationships. I’ve always offered a warmth, respect, being courteous and offering time to people, and that will never change.

“Obviously when there was that little bit that was out there, or big bit, however it was, then of course I feel the need to address that. I deal with people in life whether it’s players, relationships with them, I want to help them become better, or people in the media. I’ve spoken to Jane and she wasn’t offended. We had a laugh about it. She will continue to ask me awkward questions, I’m sure. But I see her every week and we’ve got good relations, like I have with most people in my life, whether that’s professional or social.

“The irony of it is, it’s funny actually because I shared with players not so long ago the story of Jessica Watson, who was a young woman at 16 years of age who travelled round the world solo on a boat. The documentary I watched was really inspiring – True Spirit it was called – and I actually shared that with the players in terms of the inspiration they could take from a young woman like that, what she’d been through. I find it saddening as much as anything because, one, I’m not that type of person, I could never be that. It’s not how I’m built. But it saddens me for society now because people are just looking and trying to find ways to somehow pin you down if they can. It’s not nice.”

The BBC journalist who Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers called a “good girl”, sparking sexism complaints, says she does not believe he meant to offend.

Mr Rodgers made the comment to reporter Jane Lewis during a post-match interview on Sunday.

It was followed by calls from women’s groups for him to apologise.

The Northern Irishman said “some people were looking to be offended” and he has since “had a laugh” with Ms Lewis about it.

Ms Lewis said on Tuesday she accepted the interview had “become a talking point”.

But she added: “I don’t believe there was any offence meant by Brendan Rodgers – and for my part, there was none taken.”

The BBC Scotland Sportsound interview followed Celtic’s 3-1 win against Motherwell at Fir Park.

Mr Rodgers was asked by Ms Lewis about its impact on the Premiership title race.

‘Saddening’
The Celtic manager said: “The story has already been written about this group. But we will write our own story.”

When asked by Ms Lewis for “a bit more insight” into what he meant, Mr Rodgers replied: “No, no, you know exactly what I mean”.

He concluded by saying “done, good girl, well done” before walking away.

Mr Rodgers told members of the media on Tuesday he found it “saddening” to be accused of sexism.

“Sadly, for me, in society now… they’ll find something that is offensive to try and pin onto people,” he said.

He said he based his relationship with journalists on warmth, respect and courtesy and that would never change.

The Celtic manager added: “Obviously when there was that little bit that was out there, a big bit, however it was, then of course I feel the need to address it.

“I have spoken to Jane and she wasn’t offended, we had a laugh about it.

“She will continue to ask me awkward questions I’m sure, and I see her every week and we’ve good relations like I have with most people in my life, whether that’s professional or social.

“I found it saddening as much as anything because I’m not that type of person. I could never be that, It’s not how I am built.

‘Casual sexism’
The Scottish Feminist Network and For Women Scotland had urged Mr Rodgers to explain the “good girl” comment, which has been labelled as “casual sexism”.

A spokeswoman for the group said: “Rodgers’s throwaway comment encourages other football fans to behave in a similar way, demeaning women they work with or engage with.

“It has to stop.

“Jane Lewis was just doing her job, trying to extract an explanation from Brendan Rodgers on his cryptic comment.

“That the go-to attitude of a manager of a winning team was condescension is quite illuminating but really very depressing in 2024. We thought dinosaurs were extinct.”

A spokeswoman at For Women Scotland said: “It’s depressing that casual sexism is still embedded in sport.

“Women’s achievements are underrated and dismissed, and their professional status undermined. Rodgers owes the reporter an apology.”
