Summary

(joebloggscity of thecelticwiki)
Don’t let the scoreline fool you! Celtic pulled this one out at the death of the match, with livingstone having pulled themselves back twice from behind to almost take Celtic to extra time at least. Livingston almost stole the win at points with the Celtic defence very poor. If anything a neutral will have enjoyed the changing fortunes of the sides in this game.

Celtic did dominate the game, and enough opportunities to win and gave an easy game but continued to make life difficult for themselves. If anything some good attack play hid the deficiencies elsewhere. Kuhn was excellent and played his part, especially with a top level assist for the opening goal.

It was Maeda who stole the headlines with a hat trick to save Celtic in this game. Kyogo scored at the very end.

VAR again reared its head for checks at every goal, and all the calls were at the margins driving all crazy.

Lot more is required by Celtic to step up from the r the remainder of the season.

Plus whats happened to the form of Matt O’Riley? He has dipped so badly since December. Some point it to the transfer speculation in January.

Asgardstreasure of KDS: The defence was woeful and that was the reason why this tie became so awkward. Scales needs CCV alongside him.
The Livi player who scored the first goal took it brilliantly. But it was just a punt over the top that started the move.
If we are to have any chance of winning the league we need CCV and Calmac.
I thought Kuhn played his best game yet and by a distance. MOR has gone right off the boil.
BR said after the game that JF is our best winger and he certainly played very well today. I think that was a sharp dig at the board as we seem to have signed an army of wingers over the last year or two and yet BR rates Forrest as head and shoulders above all of them.
Almost every time I see BR in interview these days I get the impression of someone who really does not want to be here.

Jimmy_mac of KDS:  Today Four goals didn’t flatter us with the amount of half chances we created but it wasn’t pretty. Decentish first half but the usual post half time performance made it a lot more difficult than it needed to be and against a better side we could easily have lost that game. A decent defence and that is a comfortable win but the current one is a bombscare. CCV makes a big difference but Scales and Welsh are back up players and we need better. The midfield was poor. Iwata went about his game quietly and didn’t really impose himself. He was 6/10, nothing bad, just there. MOR and Bernardo were our biggest issues, particularly Bernardo. He is, I don’t know how to put it, just grey. Contributes very little at times. MOR isn’t good enough to carry a midfield like that and with the midfield 3 being off the pace our tempo dropped and we went to full on horseshoe in the 2nd half, relying on Scales and Welsh to play quarterback. Awful. We miss Callum.

Etims: FT #Celtic 4 Livvy 2

Good going forward. Kuhn best game. Daizen hat-trick should have had 6! Central defence is levels below what we need minus CCV. Without CCV & CalMac we are going to have to average 3 or 4 goals per game to have any success!

@agentscotland: Every game’s a struggle, I don’t expect it to be any different next week against St Johnstone, that Dundee game looks every bit of the anomaly.

JR: Taking the positives. Kuhn was great and created a lot. Maeda was taking players on and getting into great scoring positions again. We were actually very good going forward. I think we can score enough in the remaining games to win the league. Without ccv,i don’t think we can concede few enough, though.

Celtic Park grumbles return in compelling cup tie as Daizen Maeda’s magic moments save the day

Livingston put up strong resistance before eventually succumbing to late goals

Brendan Rodgers still hasn’t lost a Scottish Cup tie and Livingston are yet to savour a first ever win at Celtic Park.

Those statistics, though, tell only part of the story of a compelling cup tie in which the visitors more than played their part before succumbing late on to the third goal of a Daizen Maeda hat-trick that helped steer his team into the semi-finals.

Celtic supporters would have considered this cup clash against the Premiership’s bottom side as welcome respite from their league struggles, but again it was far from straightforward. The home side twice led and were twice pegged back before eventually finding a way to prosper thanks to their persistence and the Livingston defence switching off at inopportune moments.
Daizen Maeda scored a hat-trick as Celtic eventually moved past Livingston in the Scottish Cup.
Daizen Maeda scored a hat-trick as Celtic eventually moved past Livingston in the Scottish Cup.

With Kyogo Furahashi again starting on the bench – he would have his moment late on – Celtic had cause to thank the finishing prowess of another of their Japanese imports. Maeda’s dynamism had been key to 10-man Celtic winning at Livingston earlier in the season and his hat-trick here ultimately proved to be the difference between the sides.

His first goal owed much to the perceptiveness of Nicolas Kuhn who spotted Maeda’s run and then picked him out with a deft left-foot cross that the forward controlled and finished well. Maeda’s second, after Livingston had drawn level for the first time, was a more instinctive effort, the Japanese stooping to steer a header into the net after Matt O’Riley’s shot had been well saved by Michael McGovern. The third – with extra-time just four minutes away – showed his predatory instincts as he poked home Tomoki Iwata’s cross from short range. How Celtic needed that intervention after another patchy performance against a doughty Livingston side who refused to go down quietly.

Celtic were again without Callum McGregor and Cameron Carter-Vickers due to injury, with the latter’s absence particularly felt at Livingston’s first equaliser that halted the home side in their tracks. Cristian Montano’s clipped ball down the line would likely have been mopped up by the ever-alert American international but his understudy, Stephen Welsh, wasn’t as diligent. By the time Welsh had spotted the danger, Daniel MacKay was racing clear before applying an impressive finish beyond Joe Hart.

It is hard to imagine Celtic conceding the goal Livingston plundered for their second equaliser 10 minutes into the second half had McGregor and Carter-Vickers both been on the pitch. O’Riley dallied in possession and was robbed by Jamie Brandon whose quick pass sent Tete Yengi through. O’Riley got back to cover but the striker simply turned away from the midfielder before fizzing a stunning shot into the far corner of Hart’s net.

Celtic Park, for the first but not last time, grumbled in exasperation and it could have been much worse not long after had Michael Nottingham directed his header either side of Hart rather than straight at him.

Livingston threw on another striker in Kurtis Guthrie sensing a chance to win it inside the 90 minutes only to be unpicked again by Maeda who also came within the width of the crossbar of claiming a fourth goal late in the contest. Instead it was his countryman, Furuhashi, who would have the final word, fastening on to James Forrest’s header and finishing well to end any doubts about the outcome.

Holders Celtic were given an almighty fright by Livingston before reaching their ninth Scottish Cup semi-final in 10 years, with manager Brendan Rodgers conceding he “wasn’t comfortable” until two late goals.

Daizen Maeda completed his hat-trick before Kyogo Furuhashi made the scoreline more convincing.

Celtic were looking to recover from last weekend’s league defeat by Hearts and Rodgers admitted “today, we didn’t play well, but we won and that makes me very happy”.

Indeed, the Premiership’s bottom side threatened another shock as they twice came from behind to level in search of their first-ever win at Celtic Park.

Daniel MacKay’s fine finish was sandwiched between two Maeda goals within an action-packed opening 22 minutes.

Tete Yengi superbly fired Livingston level again 10 minutes after the break, but Celtic’s Japanese forward was on hand to ease home nerves as extra-time loomed before his international colleague added the final flourish.

The talk just before kick-off was more about who was not in the respective starting line-ups rather than who was playing.

Livingston boss David Martindale admitted he was depressing himself explaining why he had made five, mainly forced, changes but saw a chink of light in the absence of Callum McGregor and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

It looked like any optimism would be misplaced when Celtic forged ahead after only seven minutes.

Nicolas Kuhn, handed a start in place of the suspended Yang Hyun-jun, turned in from the touchline and delivered a superb ball behind the visiting defence and fellow winger Maeda provided the clinical finish.

Seven minutes gone and a long day for Livi looked in prospect, but they were soon level when MacKay was found by a long ball and the on-loan Hibernian midfielder thumped it high past goalkeeper Joe Hart.

However, hesitancy as they tried to clear their penalty box meant the visitors were only level for another 10 minutes.

Matt O’Riley pounced to fire a shot off the legs of McGovern and, although the veteran goalkeeper did well to deny the midfielder, he was unable to get enough on Maeda’s diving header on the rebound to deny the Japanese international.

Yengi had already headed just wide before the former Ipswich Town forward pounced on lost Celtic possession, turned O’Riley inside out, and fired superbly into the far corner.

Celtic looked shaken and were thankful for Hart’s legs as Michael Nottingham’s header was cleared off the line.

At the other end, McGovern was performing heroics of his own to thwart Celtic until two substitutes made the difference – James Forrest setting up Maeda for his fourth and Kyogo slotting in the killer fourth.

There were a few candidates – Livingston goalkeeper McGovern, goalscoring team-mate Yengi and Celtic’s Kuhn – but how can you ignore anyone scoring a hat-trick and coming close to scoring more? Maeda it is.
Resources off bench make the difference – analysis

The pressure was back on Rodgers and his side after they fell short when given the opportunity to go back to the top of the Premiership last weekend.

Defeat by Hearts was compounded by the loss of captain McGregor and Carter-Vickers through injury and their leadership was clearly missing.

Rodgers’ side enjoyed their traditional lions’ share of possession, but they looked vulnerable at the back before their superior resources off the bench proved the difference and kept them in the hunt to lift the cup for a 42nd time.

The Northern Irishman suggested that Celtic, more than any other team in the country, are expected to not only win but also put in a show, but on this occasion he will simply be pleased to have made it 15 wins in 15 Scottish Cup ties as the club’s manager.

Martindale had bemoaned his need to field a “makeshift” midfield such were Livingston’s absences, but he has made his name from making the most of the players at his disposal – and so it was again.

They will be disappointed to exit the cup considering they came close to going ahead at 2-2, but the league remains their priority.

Martindale has found a bit of a gem in Yengi and the big striker could yet be the difference between staying up and going down as the West Lothian side look to show similar battling qualities and clinical finishing in the Premiership run-in.
What they said
Celtic ‘gave Livingston too many possibilities’

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “We got ourselves into the semi-final and you can see the players we had missing and the difference that makes. We gave them too many possibilities and the centre-halves need to be higher up the pitch.

“But you’ve still got to show that mentality and that drive and that ambition to keep wanting to get there.

“Also a big credit to Livingston because it’s been a really difficult year for David and his team, but they came here and they fought and made us work right to the very end to get to the semi-final.”

Livingston manager David Martindale: “It was a good game, but it was disappointing at the same time because I thought we had a wee opportunity.

“We get sucker-punched into the third goal. Fourth goal, I’m not really too fussed about. We just threw caution to the wind.

“It’s probably one of the few occasions we’ve come here and we’ve genuinely been in the game.”
