Brendan Rodgers reacts to Celtic’s 3-0 win over Hearts and looks ahead to next weekend’s match against Rangers (May 2024)

(joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki):
Celtic showed a ruthlessness that really has been missing for much of the season.
One of the best performances of the season, and exactly when it was needed too.
Kyogo was on form but really Hatate was the catlyst. At the other end, Hearts actually could or should have scored a couple of goals themselves, but Hart pulled off some world class saves, and CCV was a rock at the centre of the defence.
Kyogo was unfortunate not to score a hat-trick. His first goal was thankfully on side but very marginal and needed VAR to confirm it, whilst the second was a sublime goal with a long-ball by Hatate floated in long down the pitch from near the halfway line for Kyogo to head it in.
A sublime penalty by O’Reilly sealed the match, made all the sweeter that it was conceded by Ibrox bound Shankland who really should have received his second yellow card at this point.
The refereeing was often poor and inexcusable for missing some aspects. Three games left to seal the title, but Celtic have the advantage of three points in front and better in goals difference.

Stevie Jackson @bobby__peru Excellent performance today. McGregor looked fit for the first time since he came back and having our best midfield in place makes such a difference. As does having the first 3 or 4 subs available not massively weakening us. Great from Joe Hart when needed as well.

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · Top performance from Celtic, fast one touch football with a real intensity in their game, Kyogo was deadly, Hatate & O’Riley at their inventive best, McGregor was tenacious & powerful, and Scales & Carter-Vickers were a rock in defence, a statement victory. No idea how Kevin Clancy missed Shankland’s handball, everyone in the stadium saw it, Shankland’s reaction said it all, I get that’s what VAR is for, but you can’t be missing the most obvious incidents like that. All pressure on Rangers at Ibrox tomorrow, they would’ve went into this weekend with a bit of hope Hearts could do them a favour, now they’re in a position where they need to win just to stand still, squad decimated with injuries too, could be a nervy day in Govan.

JMLapsley of KDS:  Don’t underestimate how much we needed that, not just the win but the performance. No sign of nerves, professional and players looked like they were loving every minute of it. Showing excellent touches, vision, precision and a clear structure.Huge performances from so many, exactly what you want to see at this stage of the season.Huns and MSM would be DESPERATE to see us drop points or at the very least struggle: we did neither. Was a joy to watch and we can now sit back and wait for the game next week. We are 1 win from the league and based on today’s performance it is coming!Love days like these.

Highland__Paddy @Highland__paddy Whole lower tier of the stand behind the goals sees the handball by Shankland , Celtic players all appeal for it , …..ref goes to VAR . As an aside , Shankland was already booked , committed a few fouls after it , then handled the ball. Stayed on the park.

E-Tims @ETimsNet Just in from the match. WOW! Great start but then Hertz better team first 15-20 inc terrific save from Sacred Hart. After that ALL #Celtic. Tempo, pace, energy, passing & DESIRE outstanding. A fantastic team performance. Noise from the supporters was incredible. In it together. Pass from MOR & Kyogo finish for 2nd goal class. Celtic relentless after that. BR mentioned prematch CalMac was getting extra conditioning on Achilles injury, which he thought made him ‘leggy’ last week. Toned it down this week & said in training near back to his best. It showed!  Mid three magic but in all fairness all players dare I say it ‘never stopped’! Best players now available and getting fitness/sharpness back so it shouldn’t surprise us to see us play so well today as we’ve had a terrible run of injuries this season. Few other points Early in 2nd half when CalMac sprinted back & fought like fuck to win the ball back….roof almost came off the stadium! Fans seen his fitness levels right up but also seen fight from team. BIG moment today & possibly to end of season . When Daizen preparing to come on. The roar from crowd few secs prior & then when he ran on pitch. WOW. Demonstrates how much the VAST MAJORITY of supporters who are fortunate to attend games appreciate the importance he brings to the team. Love him to bits. 3 points was priority but the performance was a massive Brucie Bonus! I’d imagine players confidence will be sky high in training this coming week and that can only be a good thing. Big bravo today .

Triumphant atmosphere inside Parkhead as Hoops move six points clear
By Graeme Macpherson
Published 4th May 2024, 20:11 BST

Comments

The last time Hearts were at Parkhead just before Christmas, there was almost anarchy in the stands as Celtic suffered consecutive league defeats for the first time in more than a decade. Abuse rained down on the beleaguered board for their shoddy player recruitment, there was finger-jabbing and angry recriminations among the fans, with even poor Santa getting it in the neck during a half-time appearance on the pitch.

Five months on and the landscape has changed immeasurably. Celtic are not over the line just yet in the chase for the championship but this felt like a significant afternoon and their supporters responded accordingly, creating a celebratory atmosphere that suggested they believe their team already has one hand on the trophy.

Chants of “champions again” and “bring on the Rangers” filled the air as a double from Kyogo Furuhashi – his first brace of the season surprisingly – and a late Matt O’Riley penalty saw Celtic brush past Hearts to extend their lead at the top to six points, with a superior goal difference of eight almost worth an extra point in its own right.

Brendan Rodgers had maybe taken a risk when he spoke about creating “scoreboard pressure” before his team had even played but, with Celtic having taken care of business, all eyes will now turn to Ibrox to see if Rangers can hold their nerve against Kilmarnock in their game in hand.

Even if they do, it is undeniably Celtic’s title to lose ahead of what is shaping up to be a seismic derby next Saturday. Avoid defeat in that one and they can start to prepare the party banners for Parkhead once again.

This hasn’t been a vintage Celtic season by any stretch but they are building up a head of steam at just the right moment. The treatment room has been emptied of casualties, the spine of the side has been reinforced – Joe Hart, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Callum McGregor and Furuhashi were all excellent here – and even forgotten figures like James Forrest have returned to make scene-stealing cameos, with Rodgers, unprompted, cooing over the winger again in his post-match comments.

Celtic didn’t have everything their own way in a competitive opening period but scoring after just four minutes gave them a platform to quell Hearts’ resistance. The visitors had already created and spurned a decent chance of their own when they conceded a corner. Matt O’Riley whipped it in, Zander Clark fisted it out as far as Reo Hatate, whose lofted ball back in was headed in by Furuhashi. VAR wanted to have a second look for a potential offside but decided the goal was fair game.

The roar that greeted that outcome was as loud as anything felt around the stadium all afternoon bar the reception given to McGregor for a terrific track back and tackle on Kenneth Vargas early in the second half and the return from injury of Daizen Maeda late in the contest.

They will decide the PFA Scotland awards on Sunday evening and Celtic’s second goal after 21 minutes was another reminder from O’Riley of why his name is on the Premiership Player of the Year shortlist. Barely 10 yards inside the Hearts half, the midfielder looked up before unleashing an arcing 40-yard cross that couldn’t have landed better had he ran up and placed it.

Furuhashi tracked it all the way, shrugging off Kye Rowles before cushioning a side-footed volley beyond Clark. Only an excellent save late in the first half denied the Japanese striker his hat-trick but there was plenty to admire about his overall play.

Despite the growing air of triumphalism in the stands – the mass huddle returned at one point – Celtic were made to wait before finding the third goal that made certain of the result. Luis Palma’s corner struck Lawrence Shankland on the arm in front of goal, the Hearts captain looking resigned to the inevitable even before referee Kevin Clancy was sent to the VAR screen to double check.

O’Riley was already waiting to take the penalty and, with typical calmness, flicked the ball into the top corner to end any doubts over the outcome. The result keeps Hearts waiting as they look to nail down third place but there was plenty to be positive about with regards to their overall play, even if they couldn’t maintain the tempo of their first-half display. This, though, was Celtic’s day as they duly chalked off another fixture from the list. Another championship draws ever closer.

A clinical Kyogo Furuhashi double helped Celtic edge closer to a 12th Scottish Premiership title in 13 seasons as they dispatched Hearts to move six points clear.

In a breathless start, the Japan striker nodded in from compatriot Reo Hatate’s cross to ignite a boisterous Celtic Park crowd, which was almost stunned three minutes earlier when Lawrence Shankland’s effort deflected just wide.

Hearts, who had won their previous two encounters with Celtic, responded well but were undone again when Matt O’Riley’s outrageous ball from deep on the left found Kyogo racing into the box to finish first time.

The Celtic forward was denied a first-half treble when his shot on the swivel was tipped round the post by a busy Zander Clark, who prevented a third for the hosts after the break with a fine double save to deny Hatate and O’Riley.

But the Hearts goalkeeper could do nothing to stop O’Riley’s late penalty, rifled high into the top-right corner after an on-field review showed Shankland had clearly handled in the box.

Steven Naismith’s side excelled in first-half spells, with Cammy Devlin seeing a close-range shot tipped wide superbly by Joe Hart before Stephen Kingsley planted a back-post header wide.

But the visitors were ultimately caught out by one defensive lapse, a stunning moment of quality and a bizarre handball, although tidier finishing from Celtic would have made it a more sobering afternoon.

The result ramps up the pressure on Rangers, who welcome Kilmarnock on Sunday and now know there is almost no margin for error with a potential Old Firm title decider looming next weekend.

Meanwhile, Hearts will seal third spot if the Rugby Park side fail to win at Ibrox.

Classic Kyogo back to his clinical best – two goals from just 20 touches
Celtic effectively one win from title? – analysis

Regardless of what Rangers do on Sunday, you could make a valid case for saying Celtic are all but one win from continuing their Premiership domination.

A victory for Rodgers’ side in next Saturday’s Old Firm derby would at the very least restore a six-point lead with just six points to play for.

On the basis of their recent home form in the fixture, and with the likes of Callum McGregor and Cameron Carter-Vickers looking back to their best, Celtic fans will be confident of their team being in a commanding position next weekend.

The wait to secure third drags on for another 24 hours at least for Hearts, who are watching an impressive season peter out a bit.

Nevertheless, they gave Celtic a few scares in some promising spells but lacked a clinical edge and looked susceptible from cross balls.

Naismith will want that addressed as they aim to finish the campaign strong.
