Just a third goal in 13 games for Daizen Maeda this season, but how big will that prove to be?#Motherwell have now lost nine points from winning positions in the Premiership this season, that’s more than any other team. They gave Celtic a real test this afternoon.
“We haven’t been as productive in our goals as I’d have wanted us to be. “There have been some games we’ve been unfortunate in, like last weekend, but there have been been others where the creativity hasn’t been there. “We need to be more intense in our game, no doubt about that. Goalscoring is the responsibility of everyone.”
Brendan Rodgers prematch
“Clearly it’s a very important win for us. The players showed an unbelievable amount of heart. Playing against a Motherwell team who are unbeaten, you can see why and see how they scored three at Hearts and two here. “But we showed a real strong mentality today and real competitive grit. Even though we’re not at our levels we’ve shown in the past, you still have to win. The guys coming into the game brought an energy, mentality and fitness to the game. “It was a really good game, credit to Motherwell. Few teams will come here and try to build the game. “There’s no doubt there’s a feeling that isn’t quite what I would say is the Celtic feeling. We’re nowhere near our level, I can be clear on that. However, while your searching for it and looking to grow and settle players in, it’s important you win. On match-winner Daizen Maeda: “For him and his family it’s huge. There’s no doubt everything in the summer would have an effect on him. We kept him on because he has that ability in the box. So, so pleased for him. “For four years he’s given everything, his heart and soul to this club. Naturally there was disappointment for him [in the summer] and I totally respect that. He’s still turned up and he’s working hard every single game. That there is a special feeling for him.”
Brendan Rodger post-match
fatboab of KDS: Very mixed bag. Another good start , few chances squandered then we get the goal and look comfortable. Ralston makes a complete mess and suddenly we’re panicking at the back and they get their equaliser.
Didn’t think theirs was a pen from my perch in 405, but at least we had a positive response , made a few changes and upped our tempo.
It was great to get a late winner, will do the confidence a lot of good as the international break arrives.
Many problems yet to be solved, but at least the desire was there.
Italiabhoy: We were the better team, especially second half when we seemed more like the old Celtic- attacking, creating chances… But if their keeper hadn’t had that howler, we could easily have lost it. Pleased for Bali- nice positive wing play. As someone says above, it was a bit like an Ange goal. But weaknesses remain apparent. Midfield is a mess, far too easy to play through. Scales cannot pass, so if he’s pressured we are in trouble. We still aren’t creating enough chances. The break might do us good. We desperately need to get AJ back and firing again, and Jota too. Results elsewhere perhaps make this seem a better result than it is. But I’ll take it.

FT #Celtic 3 MWell 2 What a game! End to end attacking fitba. We go 2-1 down. Massive pressure building. Great character/resolve to fight back & win. Maeda winner. So happy for him. Hopefully, Daizen & team kick on. Massive victory. Wee word for Balikwisha. Lovely run to find space in packed area. Nice touch and fine measured cross for winner. Some players can take a wee bit of time to adapt to new surroundings. Hopefully, he’ll kick on from today. Lot of credit to Motherwell. Aye, dropping likes flies the last 20 mins to waste time like many do but…the best Well team I can remember in a long time playing such good fitba. We fully merited win but they were excellent. Big word for Maeda. Was dire bulk of game. I as wanting him subbed! Moved from right wing to left wing. Little bit better then in to striker after final sub. Played all three fwd areas. Going through dreadful time. Never hides. Gets winner. So happy for him

What an unbelievable day of Scottish Football. Aberdeen trounce Dundee for their first win and goals of the season. Celtic win a dramatic 5 goal thriller in injury time. Falkirk drop two points at home to Rangers.
Motherwell were fantastic at this afternoon, played with a real freedom and purpose, got themselves into a fantastic position to win the game but a horrendous error from the keeper gave Celtic hope, and their individual quality was the difference in injury time. What a game! I’m struggling to see this Celtic team going on the kind of winning run they regularly go on every season that distances themselves from the rest, I think it’ll be a ding dong of a battle over the winter, particularly on weekends after UEL, should make for an entertaining league.

Motherwell have lost 14 of their last 16 away games against Celtic in all competitions (D2), conceding 50 goals while scoring just six in this period.
Motherwell remain unbeaten in six Scottish Premiership games this season (W1 D5), their longest unbeaten start to a league campaign since 2012-13 (first 7).

Champions leave it late to claim important victory against Motherwell
In settling the most remarkable of matches in Celtic’s favour deep into injury-time, Daizen Maeda could well prove to be the unlikeliest of peacemakers.
Supporters’ representatives and members of the board are set to sit down on Monday to discuss the running of the club, a gathering that looked set to be fuelled by anger and frustration when Brendan Rodgers’ side appeared to be on course for a fourth successive game without a victory.
Trailing to a Motherwell side eyeing up a first win in this fixture for a decade, Celtic rallied to find first an equaliser through Benjamin Nygren and then, in the dying embers of the match, a winner from Maeda.
That was cruel on the visitors who had played with bravery and conviction to contribute significantly to a compelling contest but had the effect of transforming the atmosphere around Parkhead, frustration giving way to joy and relief at seeing their heroes somehow battling their way to a victory when all hope had again looked lost.
Scoring three times to cut the gap behind Hearts to two points will take some of the edge off matters heading into the international break, although the off-field discontent could rumble on for some time yet.
Two banners were held up by the Green Brigade before and at the end of the match, one declaring the Celtic board “unfit for purpose.” The second was more vulgar and to the point: “**** the meeting, resign”, a facsimile raised in front of the directors box late in the contest.
Winning would clearly help situation
Winning more matches would help dial down some of that simmering rage but that’s something Celtic have struggled with of late, even if they did find a way to prosper on this occasion.
Hibs had stolen away from Parkhead the previous weekend with a point gained through unglamorous but effective defensive toil. That would seem the perfect blueprint for others to follow but not Motherwell under Jens Berthel Askou who tend to treat defending as something to be undertaken only when strictly necessary.
Within the first minute they were advancing into the Celtic penalty box, their unwavering commitment to attack imbuing the contest with a frantic, helter-skelter feel, Motherwell pressing Celtic with such collective intensity that mistakes began to crop up from which they would eventually capitalise.
Opposite sides used to meekly fold after falling behind here but Motherwell showed significant resolve to not wither after conceding first. After all the furore over the handball that wasn’t in Celtic’s midweek Europa League defeat to Braga, a similar call in their favour presented them with the chance to move in front midway through the first half.
Callum McGregor slammed a shot into the ground that bounced up and onto the outstretched arm of Regan Charles-Cook. Referee Calum Scott initially played advantage before returning to give the penalty that VAR quickly rubber stamped. Kelechi Iheanacho made up for the goal he was denied on Thursday night by rolling his shot past Calum Ward.
If that was unfortunate from Motherwell’s perspective then they didn’t buckle and fashioned an equaliser before the first half was out. The modern-day predilection for playing the ball out from the back can often turn into a hazardous venture if those attempting to undertake it aren’t quite up to the task.
Motherwell pounce on sloppy defending
Anthony Ralston found as much to his cost, his sloppy play creating a Motherwell turnover. Ibrahim Said spun before feeding a ball wide to Tawanda Maswanhise whose cross was met by Apostolos Stamatelopoulos who planted a low header beyond Kasper Schmeichel.
Motherwell began the second half in similar fashion and found themselves ahead just 10 minutes in. Again it came from the penalty spot after Marcelo Saracchi was adjudged to have trod on Maswanhise’s foot as the pair contested Emmanuel Longelo’s cut back. Stamatelopoulos lifted the ball just high enough over Schmeichel’s outstretched arm to give Motherwell an unlikely but deserved lead.
That prompted Rodgers to make a triple change and one of those replacements, Nygren, spurned two golden chances to equalise. It was third time lucky, then, for the Swede who could scarcely believe his good fortune when Ward squirted a pass straight to him. Nygren was never going to miss from that range and this breathless, chaotic encounter had taken yet another twist with the teams knotted up again with 20 minutes to go.
It took until injury-time before the outcome was settled. Arne Engels slipped a pass to Michel-Ange Balikwisha and his cross was headed low beyond Ward by Maeda.

CELTIC…3
(Iheanacho 28, Nygren 69, Maeda 90-3)
MOTHERWELL…2
(Stamatelopoulos 41 & 55)
A late goal from Daizen Maeda gave Celtic a 3-2 home win over Motherwell this afternoon, on a day when the Hoops had to come from behind to claim all three points.
Celtic started the match positively, and within minutes of kick-off, Callum McGregor found himself with a shooting opportunity from close range, but Motherwell keeper, Calum Ward made the save.
Motherwell have started this season well and have earned praise for their positive attacking play, and with just over 15 minutes gone, they gave a glimpse of the threat they pose in the final third, as Stamatelopoulos was sent through on goal, but a brilliantly-timed slide challenge from Liam Scales halted the attack.
The game flowed well, with both teams looking to create opportunities, though the Celts were the team who were dominating much of the play, and with 25 minutes gone, they were given an opportunity to take the lead after a handball from Regan Charles-Cook resulted in a penalty being awarded to Celtic.
Kelechi Iheanacho, who claimed his first Celtic goal a few weeks back when he scored a late spot-kick at Rugby Park, stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way as he buried his penalty in to the bottom corner to make it 1-0 to Celtic.
Undeterred by the Celtic goal, the visitors continued to push forward and look for opportunities, with Kasper Schmeichel forced to make an excellent save after Maswanhise shot from close range.
Motherwell grabbed an equaliser with five minutes of the half to go after a cross in to the box from Maswanhise was turned in to the net at the front post by Stamatelopoulos, who had looked threatening throughout the first 45 minutes.

Early in the second half, Motherwell were awarded a penalty of their own after Maswanhise went down in the box under a challenge from Saracchi. Stamatelopoulos got his second of the afternoon from the spot, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Brendan Rodgers made a triple change, bringing Arne Engels, James Forrest and Benjamin Nygren into the game and almost immediately, Nygren had an opportunity from 10 yards out which he fired wide of the target.
The Swede had another chance moments later which the keeper saved, but with his third attempt on goal, he grabbed the equaliser. Motherwell’s goalkeeper passed it straight in to Nygren’s feet in the box and he fired it in to the net to make it 2-2
Lifted by that goal, the Celts went hunting for the winner, which came three minutes in to stoppage time. Michel-Ange Balikwisha, who had been brought on with 10 minutes to go, sent a cross towards the front post.
Daizen Maeda stooped low and got his head to the ball, sending it in to the net and sparking brilliant celebrations amongst the home support.
The visitors were unable to respond, and when the full-time whistle went, Celtic had a well-deserved win and go in to the international with another three points on the board. The win is also Brendan Rodgers’ 200th victory as Celtic manager, a brilliant milestone for the Hoops’ boss.

On a day of drama at Celtic Park, Brendan Rodgers’ side came out on top in a five-goal thriller against Motherwell thanks to a last-gasp winner from Daizen Maeda which gave the Hoops a 3-2 win.
The manager was pleased with the victory and praised his players’ character as they came from behind to take all three points.
Speaking to Celtic TV after the game, Brendan Rodgers said: “It was a very important win for us. The players showed a lot of heart and a lot of grit and a lot of determination.
“You can see why Motherwell have gone unbeaten. Their build-up phase of the game is very good so you have to be really concentrated and organised but even then they can sometimes can break through it well.
“But I think the players deserve a huge amount of credit because it’s not easy to play here, especially when you’re behind in the game.
“The guys coming into the game made a big impact for us and we won through in the end, and I think deservedly so with the opportunities that we had, but it was still a very tough game.
“When you’re still trying to find the level of performance that we would want, you still have to show a big heart and you have to dig out results, and that’s what we did today.
“It’s been a tough start for us in a number of ways, on and off the pitch, but the one thing is that it hopefully can galvanise us, and I think the supporters will be proud of the players in terms of the heart they showed, and the spirit to keep going.”
The Hoops go into the international break on the back of the win, which sees them sitting second in the table, two points behind Hearts.
And the manager told the players after today’s game that they deserve credit for getting the victory over Motherwell.
“I congratulated them because they need to understand, especially the new ones coming in, about how much of a challenging place this is to play – the expectation here and the demands at Celtic,” he said.
“Some of the new players will have felt that, especially on a day like today when you go behind, but they also see the joy they can give to so many people.
“So I said to them well done for that because it’s so important that you can grind out a result, especially on the back of a midweek game in the Europa League where we lost, but it’s a fantastic win for us.”

Daizen Maeda’s injury-time header earned Celtic a thrilling victory after being pushed to the limit by a Motherwell side who had looked value to extend their unbeaten Scottish Premiership start.
Maeda met substitute Michel-Ange Balikwisha’s cross from close range to send an anxious home crowd into delirious delight.
Jens Berthel-Askou’s side will rue the opportunity they missed having led as they sought a first win at Celtic Park in over a decade.
Brendan Rodgers was seeking solutions to Celtic’s scoring problems and, despite creating one or two strong openings, the hosts were handed their opener from the penalty spot when Callum McGregor’s strike from the edge of the area struck Regan Charles-Cook’s arm. Kelechi Iheanacho coolly netted.
Celtic were architects of Motherwell’s equaliser as Anthony Ralson needlessly gave the ball away. It was switched to Tawanda Maswanhise, whose perfect low cross was gleefully met by Apostolos Stamatelopoulos to level.

Celtic news, views and analysis
The home side looked ragged at that stage. It got worse as Motherwell secured a dream lead.
Marcelo Saracchi seemed to have averted danger inside his own box but had, in fact, caught Maswanhise and the penalty was awarded after VAR intervention.
Australian striker Stamatelopoulos slammed home his second to send the away support wild.
Celtic struggled to break through in response but were gifted an equaliser. The visitors tried to play out from a dangerous area, goalkeeper Calum Ward played it straight to Benjamin Nygren and he couldn’t miss.
As Celtic pushed on, the winner seemed beyond them. It arrived from last season’s prolific goalscorer to break Motherwell’s hearts and, perhaps, give a platform for the home side to kick on from.
Analysis: Sheer will carries Celtic through as needless error costs Motherwell
The outcome was much needed for Celtic and the change in the crowd come full-time was quite staggering.
Their manager cited a need for increased intensity and initially there was some but it dipped in a way that is becoming familiar.
That they found a route to three points is to their credit. Clearly, there is work to be done on improving performances and carrying threat.
There are often moments in seasons when something clicks. Celtic will hope this win, and the nature of it, will prove to be the start of moving past recent negativity and looking more like the team most people expect.
Maeda was the hero but looked a shell of himself for long spells. This dramatic win might prove a turning point. Sheer will went a long way.
In contrast, Motherwell seem to be on to something under Jens Berthel-Askou’s leadership but questions will follow at the concession of Celtic’s leveller.
Having done so well for so long to establish their lead, they threw it away needlessly. A case of what might have been but the visitors deserve huge credit for their overall performance.
They didn’t look inferior for long spells, albeit they were increasingly pushed back. It’s a sore one but one they can draw real positives from with some lessons to be learned.
What they said
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “Clearly it’s a very important win for us. The players showed an unbelievable amount of heart.
“Playing against a Motherwell team who are unbeaten, you can see why and see how they scored three at Hearts and two here.
“But we showed a real strong mentality and real competitive grit. Even though we’re not at our levels we’ve shown in the past, you still have to win.”
Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou: “I’m gutted on the players’ and fans’ behalf. I’m extremely proud of our performances, not just today but the first part of the season.
“I can’t praise our players enough. We gave ourselves the opportunity to win, which not many teams do here. I know we’ll grow over the next period.
“I’m not asking them to give the ball to the opposition inside the box, but no matter which style you prefer there will be ball losses.”
What’s next?
The international break gives both sides the best part of a fortnight to take stock and regroup.
Celtic return to Premiership action on Sunday 19 October (12:00 BST) with a visit to face Dundee.
Motherwell host Falkirk the previous day (15:00).
