Summary
“Well, there’s no doubt that it’s in a difficult moment, and I think it goes hand in hand. If I’m honest, I think that it is difficult. We understood what we wanted to be as a football team in the summer and we never quite managed to get there. So of course we now have to live with that. So that’s something that every day we’re trying to improve and make better. But there’s absolutely no doubt that we’re in a difficult moment and we have to stand together and come through, and that’s what’s going to be important if we’re going to progress.”
Pre match Brendan Rodgers (Oct 2025)
“I said before the game to the players, we’ve really got to show leadership now. In my experience, when those types of players are under pressure, they progress. And you could see from the weekend coming into this game – the progress in the team was so good, individually and collectively. And when you have a setback, like the weekend, those leaders show the motivation to go again, and we saw that tonight. So happy for the likes of Benji [Nygren]. He’s playing out of position, showed courage to keep going, he eventually gets his goal. Arne Engels I thought was outstanding in the game. Coming back in, gave us that energy and that fight. And his set-piece quality really is world class.”
Brendan Rodgers post-match
Arsene Parcelie of KDS forum:
First half was exactly like it has been, slow, creating nothing, could have been three or four behind.
Very reluctant to shoot.
Second half the speed went up, and the attempts started to be made.
Injuries may prove to be a problem, but we’ve just got to deal with it.
Sunday will show how the mentality is.
I feel that once the pilot light is relit, then we might get back to looking forward to games for the right reasons.
Tonight may just be the “match” to create the spark.
Here’s hoping, because I hate feeling apathetic about what’s happening just now
E-Tims @ETimsNet · 1h FT #Celtic 2 Graz 1 Fully deserved win for Celtic who came from behind and adversity of two key players picking up 1st half injuries to beat Sturm Graz. Some of the play was excellent at times & Nygren could/should have scored 4 or 5 goals. Big bravo Reading a lot of negative comments. I get ire & frustration at recent performances and abysmal play at Dundee…but….our tempo and a lot of our play has been decent in the first half. Team low in confidence but putting everything in to turn it around & missed a couple of sitters For how abysmal Nygren was before scoring the winning goal the one big thing I’ll say in his favour is he never hides. Could be easy to not look to get involved after missing sitter after sitter and the crowd getting on his back but he kept going. Fair doos.
joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki:
After the travails of the past few weeks, especially with the humiliating 2-0 away defeat to Dundee, the club across the board needed a pick me up especially with the key fixture v Hearts upcoming on Sunday. Most had written this match off and that was clear with the below par attendance with a number boycotting.
However, Celtic were mostly on top in this game but the key problem was lack of a striker or anyone to take a shot on goal, too many wasted opportunities with needing too much time to control a passed ball to then take a shot.
Sturm Graz then took the lead through an admittedly world class strike, but really he shouldn’t have had the opportunity to take. Sturm Graz did have further opportunities, but really Celtic were on top in much of the match but it took until around the hour mark for two goals from Scales & Nygren to win the game.
Engels started and was getting flak undeservedly from too many online, however he proved them wrong and was key to the fightback, most notably with his world class corners today. Hopefully he will kick on well from here.
It was a welcome respite for Celtic and the everyone at the club, but it doesn’t solve anything. The weaknesses in the squad are there to see.
The Rebels Choice @therebelschoice.bsky.social · 1h We deserved to win the game in the end but was another hard watch. Graz are pish and if they were a good team no way we were winning tonight. We can’t seem to play simple passes and five the ball away easily far too often. Lots of work to do with this team.
Stephen @bigsteviebhoy.bsky.social · 1h Engels was excellent in that 2nd half, as were reo and calmac. Nygren is so frustrating, misses so many easy chances but still got what proved to be the winner tonight. Think scales was motm tonight tho, another very good performance from the big man
Rick Hendry @rickhendry.bsky.social · 1h So proud of our team tonight, at 1-0 down I feared the worst, I thought It was going to be another negative result, but we dug deep and finally found away through, a great result and a massive boost ahead of Sunday’s trip to the capital, huge blow with the injuries to AJ and Iheanacho Hail Hail
MrMurph @mrpmurphy.bsky.social · 54m Good effort from the team generally. We looked dangerous when we were moving the ball at speed and playing forward passes. Not sure why we don’t do that for the full 90 but hopefully it will build confidence. Need to find our shooting boots for Sunday.
Albherto @thecelticalberto.bsky.social Nygren may not be perfect, but right now he is – by far – the most likely goalscorer for us, even out of position Striking deficiencies are an absolutely ridiculous state of affairs, even before Iheanacho’s injury But proud of the boys last night. Dug in and actually gave Graz a bit of a doing

Sturm Graz have won three of their five previous major European matches against Scottish teams (L2), including a 2-1 win over Rangers last time out. Barcelona in 2007-08 are the only side to ever beat both Celtic and Rangers in a single European campaign in the UEFA Champions League.
This match will be Brendan Rodgers’ 63rd in Europe with Celtic (inc. qualifiers), moving him outright second ahead of Neil Lennon (62) for European games managed, behind only Jock Stein (68).
Sturm Graz rank bottom for passes per sequence (2.4), open play sequences with 10+ passes (3), average sequence time (5.9 seconds) and successful passes (491) in the UEFA Europa League this season.
Celtic winger Sebastian Tounekti has made the most opposition half take-ons (15) in the UEFA Europa League this season, while he’s also made the most take-ons in the opposition box (5).

Liam Scales scores as Celtic storm back to beat Sturm Graz

Liam Scales scored a crucial equaliser with two goals in three second-half minutes getting Celtic motoring in the Europa League as Brendan Rodgers’ side came from behind to beat 10-man Sturm Graz 2-1.
A wonderful long-range strike from Tomi Horvat put Graz on course to join Barcelona’s 2007-08 side as the only teams to have the distinction of beating both Celtic and Rangers in Europe in the same season.
With one point from their opening two games, Celtic were in danger of being left behind in the Europa League and they missed a series of chances before Republic of Ireland defender Scales and Benjamin Nygren netted from corners just after the hour mark.
The visitors had Tochi Chukwuani sent off in the 70th minute for a poor challenge on Callum McGregor and Celtic saw out the win.
However, it came at a cost after they lost striker Kelechi Iheanacho and full-back Alistair Johnston to hamstring injuries early in the game. The right-back was making his first appearance since suffering the same problem in the Champions League play-off against Kairat Almaty two months ago.
With Daizen Maeda already out with a similar injury, Johnny Kenny played all but the opening two minutes up front and both the Sligo man and Nygren could easily have had a hat-trick apiece.

Johnny Kenny, who was included in the Ireland squad for September, had a lively night
Rodgers had given a withering assessment of his squad after Sunday’s defeat by Dundee continued an indifferent start to the season, effectively arguing he had been handed the keys to a Honda Civic and asked to drive it like a Ferrari.
The Celtic manager brought in Arne Engels for his fifth start of the season and started Nygren on the right of his front three as he attempted to find an attacking formula following a sixth game without scoring of the campaign.
Kenny created the first chance of the game when he won the ball on the right wing and drove a shot inches past the far post.
But the visitors were soon ahead in the 15th minute when Horvat swept a shot into the top corner from nearly 30 yards after some sharp passing gave the midfielder the chance to run at the Celtic defence.
Celtic’s Benjamin Nygren celebrates scoring to make it 2-1 during a UEFA Europa League 2025/26 League Phase MD3 match between Celtic and SK Sturm Graz at Celtic Park, on October 23, 2025, in Glasgow, Scotland.
Benjamin Nygren got the crucial winner for the Glasgow giants
The visitors came closest to scoring again before the break when Otar Kiteishvili hit the post following a cutback.
But Celtic were creating a steady stream of chances, if sometimes vindicating their manager’s analogy on the pace of their attacking.
Nygren lacked direction and conviction in three good headed chances and fluffed a good shooting opportunity, Kenny forced a save from a tight angle but also took a heavy touch when he latched on to a ball over the top.
Engels had a header cleared off the line from a cross by Kieran Tierney, who was causing problems for the Austrians, and Reo Hatate fired just over from 18 yards 20 seconds after the interval.
Graz threatened twice early in the second half but Celtic levelled when Engels took a short corner and Johnston’s replacement, Colby Donovan, helped the ball on for Scales to slot home first time.
Engels soon delivered a brilliant corner from the opposite side to allow Nygren to nod home from close range.
Celtic got some breathing space when Chukwuani caught McGregor with raised studs after baulking at the prospect of a 50-50 with the Hoops captain.
The hosts had chances to finish off their visitors. Kenny was off target from efforts from two crosses and then forced a save and sub Michel-Ange Balikwisha came close with a curler. But some late Graz pressure came to nothing.

It was a night and a performance to remember for Celtic under the Paradise lights tonight as Brendan Rodgers’ men came from a goal behind to defeat Sturm Graz 2-1 in the third Europa League match of the campaign.
The Austrians took the lead through a tremendous first-half goal from Tomi Horvat, but throughout the match, the Hoops created chance after chance, and when the equaliser from Liam Scales eventually came, the relief inside Celtic Park was palpable.
That goal was quickly followed up by a finish from Benjamin Nygren to put Celtic ahead and ultimately secure a thoroughly deserved three points for the Hoops.
Speaking to Celtic TV after tonight’s win, Brendan Rodgers heaped praise on to his players for how they approached the game as he highlighted the importance of the win ahead of Sunday’s trip to Tynecastle.
“I thought we were brilliant in the game,” the Celtic manager said. “I mentioned beforehand that with pressure you can go two ways.
“You can either make progress or you can crumble, and the performance of the players showed that they progressed so much tonight.
“We really dominated a very good team in Sturm Graz. You can see the goals they’ve scored and the physicality they have.
‘It’s always about the performance. I always feel that when we perform then we hopefully get what we deserve and tonight we got that.’
“I’ve said before that there are always games in your season that can be the turning point and I think that tonight is an all-round performance against a good side.
“Now we have to recover because we have a big game on Sunday and we have to put that same energy and focused mentality in to that game.”

(Horvat 15)
Celtic gained their first victory over the UEFA Europa League campaign with a well-deserved 2-1 victory over Sturm Graz.
Despite going a goal down in the first-half, goals from Liam Scales and Benjamin Nygren after the break were enough to give Brendan Rodgers’ side a 2-1 victory at Paradise.
The game had barely started when Celtic suffered their first injury blow when Kelechi Iheanacho was forced to come off after picking up a knock, with Johnny Kenny replacing him up front.
And it was Sturm Graz who were on the front foot early in the game, with Otar Kiteishvili trying his luck from outside the area, although his effort went high and wide.
With 13 minutes played, Celtic had a great chance to open the scoring when Johnny Kenny won the ball on the right touchline and surged towards goal, but his effort went just wide of the right-hand post.
And two minutes later, the Austrian side took the lead when Tomi Horvat fired in an unstoppable shot from 30 yards out to make it 1-0.
Celtic pushed for an equaliser, with Liam Scales and Benjamin Nygren off target with headers, while Arne Engels had an effort blocked inside the area.
But in the 23rd minute there was another injury blow for the Hoops when Alistair Johnston pulled up, appearing to hold his hamstring.
The Canadian, making his first appearance since suffering a hamstring injury back in August was replaced by Colby Donovan.
Just after the half-hour mark, Kiteishvili came close to doubling Sturm Graz’s lead, but his shot from eight yards out hit the post.
Celtic continued to create chances, with an Engels header cleared off the line, while Nygren put a header from six yards out wide of the target and Johnny Kenny had an effort saved at the keeper’s near post.

Just 20 seconds into the second half and Celtic had a glorious chance to equalise when the ball fell kindly to Reo Hatate on the edge of the box. He did well to work it on to his left foot but his effort went narrowly over the bar.
And Sturm Graz then had two great chances to score at the other end, with Horvat’s free-kick from just outside the area pushed behind by Kasper Schmeichel, and from the resulting corner, Stankovic headed just wide.
With 10 minutes of the second-half gone, Nygren had another opportunity, but his header from six yards out also missed the target.
The Swedish midfielder, playing wide on the right, had another close-range effort saved, but just after the hour mark Celtic got back on level terms when Liam Scales steered home Colby Donovan’s cutback.
And just three minutes later, it was 2-1 to the Hoops when Nygren headed home from an Engels corner, giving them a lead that their endeavours deserved.
Sturm Graz’s efforts to get back on level terms wasn’t helped when Tochi Chukwuani was red-carded for a bad challenge on Callum McGregor in the 70th minute.
Johnny Kenny came close to scoring Celtic’s third of the night with 10 minutes remaining when he slip in to connect with an Engels cross, but his effort went wide, while moments later he headed over from a Kieran Tierney delivery from the left.
Benjamin Nygren was then denied his second of the night in the 84th minute when his header from an Engels corner was tipped over the bar by the Sturm Graz keeper.
And Michel-Ange Balikwisha, on as a substitute for Sebastian Tounekti, had a great chance in the last minute of the 90 when he cut inside from the left and curled a shot just wide of the target.
It was a hard-fought but well-deserved win for Celtic, giving them four points after three games in the league phase of the UEFA Europa League.

Celtic lose Iheanacho and Johnson to injury in the first half
ByMartin Dowden
BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic Park
Celtic staged an admirable second-half comeback to earn their first Europa League win of the campaign to see off 10-man Sturm Graz.
Liam Scales and Benjamin Nygren struck within three minutes of each other as Brendan Rodgers’ side clicked into gear in front of an appreciative Celtic Park crowd.
The defending Scottish champions came into this under pressure, having taken just one point from their opening two fixtures in this competition and off the back of a league defeat to Dundee on Sunday.
With challenging away ties to follow next month against Midtjylland and Feyenoord, three points seemed vital to get a foothold in the table.
Within a couple of minutes of kick off, Celtic suffered another blow as they lost lost Kelechi Iheanacho to injury. It seemed that might set the tone.

Desire and intent was evident throughout but execution was, initially, repeatedly missing despite creating a number of glaring opportunities.
In complete contrast, Sturm seized on their first real chance when Tomi Horvat struck a quite stunning long-range strike straight into the top corner.
The response was strong but again derailed when Alistair Johnston – on his return from injury – had to be replaced. Another big blow.
Then some luck arrived when Kasper Schmeichel’s post came to the rescue as Otar Kiteishvili shot was diverted away.
Celtic generated an incredible number of chances from there. It took centre-back Scales to show the way with a composed finish that hauled them level.
Nygren, after missing chance after chance, then converted a header moments later to earn victory, one made slightly smoother by Sturm being reduced to 10 men after Tochi Chukwuani’s rash challenge on Callum McGregor.
Celtic got what they wanted and Rodgers will hope it is a springboard to improved performances and results.
Analysis: Celtic find way and deliver shot in arm
Celtic graphic
Rodgers wanted a kick-start after a less than convincing start to the campaign. This win, and the manner of it, might just do that, although injuries will be of concern ahead of the visit to Hearts on Sunday.
Celtic needed to show more intensity and fight to start to get things back on track. They did, and overcame considerable adversity within this game to succeed.
They created far more chances than of late, but a lack of conviction in key moments might have cost them. To their credit, they stood up to the pressure, continued to create and, finally, got the reward they sought.
Having defeated Rangers earlier this month, Sturm arrived in good form and with confidence. At one stage, they easily could have had a two-goal cushion and you wonder what outcome might have followed if they had.
In normal circumstances you would fancy Celtic to take care of them at home. These aren’t normal circumstances right now, but this might just be the shot in the arm they need to kick on.
With that top-of-the-table Premiership meeting to follow at leaders Hearts, the potential lack of options up front will be a big challenge to overcome. Possible defensive ones, too.
Things, on a lot of fronts, haven’t been going Celtic’s way of late. Finally, they did at a vital time. On the balance of play, deservedly so, with yet more big challenges on the immediate horizon.
Match stats
Celtic secured their first win against Austrian opposition since beating FC Wacker Innsbruck in the European Cup in October 1977, ending their nine-game winless run against Austrian opponents (D3 L6).
There were 144 seconds between Liam Scales’ equaliser and Benjamin Nygren’s header putting Celtic in the lead.
Celtic’s xG total of 4.24 was the highest of any side in a Europa League game this season and the Scottish side’s highest total in a major European competition match on record (since 2013-14).
Celtic’s Nygren has seven goal involvements across eight appearances in major European competition (6 goals, 1 assist).
With an average age of 28 years 14 days, Celtic named their oldest starting XI for a major European home match since a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in November 2006 (28y 272d).
What next?
Celtic travel to Tynecastle on Sunday 26 October (12:00 GMT) looking to reel in a Hearts side who enjoy a five-point lead in the Scottish Premiership.
Their next Europa League tie is in Denmark against Midtjylland on Thursday 6 November (17:45).
