Summary
BBC:
Celtic ease to a seventh win in a row over Kilmarnock to narrow the gap at the top of the Premiership to seven points behind Hearts with a game in hand.
Goals from Johnny Kenny, Kieran Tierney, Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels send Kilmarnock to fifth consecutive defeat and down to 10th spot.
“[Yang]’s ability to go past players is just terrific. So I’m genuinely learning all the time, it was great. He comes on for a few minutes, and he has definitely got ability, and a wee turn of pace. So I am learning all the time. I thought we’d try today and start the game with a little more energy, and players that hadn’t started. Luke started the game today, and got very tired. I took a bit of a risk, really, on the Manchester City lad [Simpson-Pusey]. I thought if he could play as a centre half, he could play out there. He got off to… not a brilliant start. I thought about taking him off after four minutes. Don’t tell him that! He did fine, and I think he got applauded off the pitch, which was nice. Not necessarily by me, but honestly, I was delighted.”
Martin O’Neill (Nov 2025)
“If I’m leaving, I’m saying to the new manager ‘You’re inheriting the greatest squad that ever lived!’, but if I’m staying I’ll be saying ‘We’ve got a lot of work to do!'”
Martin O’Neill (Nov 2025)
Radar of KDS:
Pretty much a dominant performance, just let down by poor finishing and a lack of end product from the wingers. On another day could have had a few more. Still showing a lot more energy than under recent Rodgers.
Got a bit less controlled when all the subs were made, but still result was never in doubt.
Hatate and Maeda looking like they’d stood in dog shampoo when they assisted/scored was a bit concerning.
Robertson had at least 3 totally incompetent refereeing decisions in the 2nd half. The McGregor yellow when he got the ball, stopping a break for an offside, and then Maeda’s ludicrous yellow for not touching an opponent.
Maeda barged in the back in the box? No foul. Any Killie defender touched in any way? Free kick.
He’s an atrocious ref.
Jimmy Mac of KDS:
If you’ve been watching us long enough you will know that the Sunday after a European game can be a turgid affair. Throw in the lack of quality in the side, the amount of changes from the past couple of weeks and its no surprise that wasn’t the silkiest of performances. But there were some outstanding moments for the goals. All 4 had a touch of quality to them be they the finish, the pass or a good run. Pleasing to get 4 goals. I thought we looked a better side when Engels came on. Having McGregor on his own with two midfielders who prefer being much further up the park, we were noticeably poor at progressing it forward at times.

KILMARNOCK…0
Celtic picked up another three Premiership points this afternoon with a resounding 4-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Celtic Park.
Early in the game Celtic had a big chance to take the lead when the ball landed at the feet of Daizen Maeda in the box. The move had been started by debutant Jahmai Simpson-Pusey who swung a good cross in to the box, but unfortunately Maeda’s shot sailed over the bar.
Johnny Kenny was the next Celt to go close a few moments later, with his shot cannoning off the inside of the post before it was scrambled clear by the Killie defence.
With his next opportunity though, Kenny fired Celtic in to the lead. Sebastian Tounekti waltzed in to the box and played a pass towards Reo Hatate which wasn’t dealt with by the Kilmarnock defence.
Hatate was able to pick up on the loose ball and found Kenny, who dispatched his effort from close-range to make it 1-0 to Celtic.
But the recent injury concerns were added to midway through the first half when Marcelo Saracchi went down and had to be replaced by Kieran Tierney.
Kilmarnock came close to equalising shortly after Saracchi’s departure when Bruce Anderson found himself in a shooting position in the box but thankfully for the Hoops, the Killie forward rattled the crossbar from close-range.
The visitors began to grow in to the game and Kasper Schmeichel was called into action with 10 minutes of the half remaining when he tipped a shot from Scott Tiffoney over the bar to prevent an equaliser.

Early in the second half, Kieran Tierney fired Celtic in to a 2-0 lead with a brilliant finish from the edge of the box in to the bottom corner.
The left back has a history of scoring top-quality goals against Kilmarnock, with his wonder strike against them at Celtic Park eight years ago worth mentioning at any opportunity.
With the Hoops in a comfortable lead, Martin O’Neill began to make some changes, bringing Benjamin Nygren and Anthony Ralston on for Luke McCowan and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, the latter having put in a solid performance on his Celtic debut.
The Hoops continued to dominate the match, with their two-goal lead giving Kilmarnock a mountain to climb to try and get back in to the game.
With just over 10 minutes to go, Anthony Ralston went down in the box, prompting big calls for a penalty from the Celtic faithful, but the referee waved play on.
Daizen Maeda got his name on the scoresheet with a few minutes of the match remaining when he picked up on a wonderful through ball from Arne Engels and found the back of the net with a strike from inside the box.
The Japanese forward could have had another goal almost immediately when he fired a shot towards goal from outside the box, but Kilmarnock’s goalkeeper, Eddie Beach was able to make the save.
In the second minute of stoppage time, Yang, who had been brought on for Sebastian Tounekti, was pulled down in the penalty area, giving the Hoops a chance to make it 4-0 from the spot.
Arne Engels stepped up to take the spot-kick, the final action of the match, and the Belgian made no mistake as he sent his shot in to the bottom corner to round off a brilliant afternoon for Celtic.

For the second consecutive game at Celtic Park, Martin O’Neill’s side enjoyed a 4-0 victory. Last time it was Falkirk who were the victims, this time it was Kilmarnock who suffered the defeat.
It was a dominant performance from the Hoops, with the goals coming from Johnny Kenny, Kieran Tierney, Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels from the penalty spot.
Speaking after the game, Martin O’Neill said: “Obviously the most important thing is to try and get the first goal and build on that, so it was a great effort by the players, considering the disappointment of the other evening, and we had to get some energy into the side.
“I’m delighted we’ve won the game and it gives us a bit of respite now with the international break for a fortnight, and it give me a chance just to settle down.
“I genuinely don’t know what’s going to happen. A fortnight in my life seems like a very long time, and I’m going to take a couple of days myself and reflect on the fortnight I’ve just had in the sense of a whirlwind time.
“If the board make a decision in the next two weeks for a new manager, well, I’ve had the time of my life.”

Celtic got back to winning ways with a 4-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Paradise today, as the Hoops picked up another three Premiership points.
Johnny Kenny fired Celtic into a first-half lead before Kieran Tierney, Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels added to the scoreline in the second half.
Speaking to Celtic TV after the match, Tierney said that today’s win was important following on from Thursday night’s defeat in Europe.
“We were disappointed the other night,” Tierney said. “It wasn’t our best performance, so to come here today, give the fans energy and goals, and to pick up a clean sheet as well was brilliant.
“The goal was amazing. It’s my first goal since coming back and I think you could see the joy when I scored it. I’m delighted.”
Speaking alongside Tierney was today’s Man of the Match, Auston Trusty who reflected on his recent run of form and the benefits of the upcoming international break.
He added: “It’s been good. I take advantage of every opportunity. I have really good team-mates and coaching staff to help me succeed and help the team succeed so it’s been good.
“The opportunity to play for your international team and get called up, it’s a dream come true. That’s something that you always look forward to.
“It’s good for guys to go away and keep their sharpness as well.”

Celtic narrowed the gap to Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premiership to seven points with a deserved home win over struggling Kilmarnock.
Goals from Johnny Kenny, Kieran Tierney, Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels secured all three points for Martin O’Neill’s side, who have played a game fewer than the Tynecastle outfit.
Hearts were held 1-1 at home against Dundee United earlier on Sunday, providing the chance for Celtic to eat into the deficit.
Off the back of a disappointing display against Midtjylland in Denmark on Thursday in the Europa League, interim boss O’Neill made several changes to his starting line-up, including a debut for defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey.
And the defending Premiership champions started brightly back in front of their own fans, as Maeda blazed over the bar and Kenny struck the base of the post with a powerful low shot.
Moments later, Kenny had his goal, courtesy of some dreadful Kilmarnock defending.
Robbie Deas tripped over his own feet attempting to clear, allowing Reo Hatate to nip in and square it to the Irish striker, who had a tap-in.
Sebastian Tounekti, Kenny and Luke McCowan all went close for Celtic before half-time, but Kilmarnock could have levelled when Bruce Anderson rattled the crossbar with a powerful left-footed strike.

After the break though, Celtic quickly had their second goal – Tierney fizzing a shot into the far corner that was past goalkeeper Eddie Beach before he could react.
It was the Scotland defender’s first Celtic goal since 8 November 2018 against RB Leipzig in the Europa League and he roared with delight after finding the back of the net.
The visitors never really threatened to hit back and Maeda flashed a low shot past Beach before Engels scored for the spot – for a foul on Yang Hyun-Jun by James Brown, late on to make it four.
Kilmarnock have dropped to 10th and have lost five league matches on the spin, scoring just twice in that run.

Celtic were dismantled by Midtjylland in Europe on Thursday, a crushing reminder of how far they have fallen since last season’s Champions League loss against Bayern Munich.
But against more familiar opposition, they delivered a much-needed three points and performance.
They carved out chance after chance across the 90 minutes, having 40 touches and 15 shots in the Kilmarnock box and created an expected-goals tally of 2.92.
Hatate created seven chances from midfield, while Tierney impressed down the left flank – introduced off the bench after Marcelo Saracchi limped off injured.
O’Neill has undoubtedly improved Celtic’s stuttering attack since his arrival as interim boss and it remains to be seen if he will still be in charge when Celtic travel to St Mirren on 22 November.
However, Kilmarnock were the architects of their own downfall at times.
Deas was at fault for the first goal, Beech went down in instalments for the second and was never convincing coming for crosses.
They are shipping goals at an alarming rate and will welcome the opportunity to regroup during the international break.

Celtic 3-1 Rangers in gripping Premier Sports Cup semi-final
The key talking points from Celtic’s 4-0 win over Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic moved within seven points of league leaders Hearts as they ran out comfortable 4-0 winners against Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon.
Derek McInnes’ side dropped two points with a home draw against Dundee United and interim boss Martin O’Neill ensured his side took full advantage. Goals from Johnny Kenny (10), Kieran Tierney (51), Daizen Maeda (85), and Arne Engels (93) sealed a straightforward win for the reigning champions as Celtic, who still have a game in hand on their Tynecastle title rivals, closed the gap.
As for Kilmarnock, a fifth successive defeat sees manager Stuart Kettlewell under increasing pressure ahead of the international break, with his side now just two points ahead of basement club Livingston.
Have Celtic found their striker?
Has the Kyogo Furuhashi replacement that Celtic fans have been crying out for since January been under their noses the whole time? While it may be too soon to say just yet, Johnny Kenny is certainly making an argument for being the club’s new number nine. His opening goal against Kilmarnock was his fourth in his last four games, and he seems to be brimming with confidence since interim head coach O’Neill walked through the door.
His 10th-minute goal at Parkhead was significantly less flashy than his header that opened the scoring against Rangers last week, but his range of goals, coupled with his instinctive ability to be in the right place at the right time, is a big plus for the reigning champions right now. Can he keep it up? He’ll save the club a lot of money in the upcoming transfer window if he does.
A rare moment of unity
Chants of ‘sack the board’ were prevalent throughout the game again, despite Celtic closing the gap on Hearts with a dominant performance over Kilmarnock. It’s been a rollercoaster few weeks for supporters of the champions. Brendan Rodgers walking out on the club, Dermot Desmond’s explosive statement that accused the former boss of being ‘self-serving’, then a big Old Firm win, followed by a humbling in Europe. Celtic fans really haven’t been able to take a breath, let alone a moment of unity.
Step forward, Kieran Tierney. The returning hero has had a rollercoaster start to the season himself. Unable to complete 90 minutes at the beginning of the season, there were some concerns that the Scotland international had returned from Arsenal as damaged goods due to a succession of injuries during his time in North London.
Introduced to the action early in the first-half, it was his long-range strike that sealed all three points for the hosts, 2,837 days on from his last goal for the club. A fine strike from distance, a lulled Parkhead immediately burst into a chant to honour the fan favourite and – for just a split second – Celtic had unity. They’ll need more of that in the coming weeks and months ahead in order to claw their way back to the top of the Scottish Premiership.
What is happening at Celtic this season? Every side suffers with injuries at points throughout the campaign, but have they ran over a black cat recently? Perhaps broken a mirror? The Hoops seem to be picking up injuries game by game. During the midweek defeat to FC Midtjylland in the Europa League, youngster Callum Osmand was ruled out for weeks with a hamstring injury.
Celtic are already without their best two defenders in Cameron Carter-Vickers (Achilles) and Alistair Johnston (recurrence of a hamstring injury). Kelechi Iheanacho is still out with a hamstring problem, while Jota hasn’t featured this season due to an ACL injury he picked up last April. A familiar groan was heard midway through the first-half when Marcelo Saracchi appeared to pull up while attempting a cross and was forced off injured. The Uruguayan left-back was able to limp off himself, shooing away the stretcher that had appeared on the touchline as he lay on Parkhead turf, and the club will hope it is nothing too serious.
Alongside their current absentees, the Glasgow giants have had to be without Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, Auston Trusty, Paulo Bernardo, and Anthony Ralston at points this season. The squad is being tested with injuries, and Celtic will hope their luck on that front can turn soon.
The kids are alright
The biggest surprise in the Celtic starting XI was the inclusion of Jahmai Simpson-Pusey. Signed during the summer on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City, the 20-year-old has been missing in action ever since his arrival. Failing to play a minute of football under the previous head coach, and the man who brought him to the club had described him as an “important and quality” addition, but the youngster had been given zero opportunity to prove it, akin to that of fellow summer signing Osmand.
However, it appears O’Neill is willing to give youth a chance. While his hamstring injury has him sidelined for the foreseeable future, Osmand’s goal in last week’s 3-1 Premier Sports Cup win over Rangers will give him confidence that he can make his mark at Celtic when he returns to fitness. In the case of Simpson-Pusey, he’ll feel very similar. He won’t have many more comfortable afternoons than he did against Kilmarnock on Sunday, but his steady performance at right-back will show O’Neill – or whoever the next manager will be – that he can be an option in the months to come. The squad is already stretched due to the various injuries Celtic have picked up in the last few weeks, and these youngsters have proven they can be trusted to perform when needed for the Hoops.
Kettlewell under pressure
Stuart Kettlewell’s side have now lost five consecutive league games and find themselves just two points from the bottom of the table. While they had some chances on the break, even hitting the bar in the first-half, Kilmarnock look like a side devoid of confidence all across the park.
It was a curious start to the campaign for Kettlewell, who had suffered just one defeat in his opening five league games. For those with a glass half full, Kettlewell had shown signs of promise early in the campaign. However, those with a glass half empty had – rather correctly – pointed out that four of those five games were draws, and that turning some of those results into wins would be what separated the wheat from the chaff.
With just two wins in their opening 12 games, though, things are looking bleak. While Celtic away is perhaps not the place many would expect Killie to end their recent rut, confidence is a fragile thing. Suddenly, a heap of pressure is on the home clash with Motherwell after the international break.
