Summary
joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki:
You couldn’t really have scripted how this is match would pan out. Celtic really did need the win to ensure qualification to the knock out stages. The concern was that an out of sorts Utrecht would fight it out today with ex Celt Barkas in goals out today prove a point. Yet Celtic had the run of the first half and an early goal by Nygren settled the nerves, followed soon after by an own goal created by some trademark calamity from ex-Celt Barkas put the game entirely in Celtic’s hands. When Celtic were given a penalty on 19mins converted brilliantly by Engels, 3-0 seemed like it was all done. However a goal before halftime brought Utrecht back into the game and were close to getting second soon after. They did manage to get a second just after the hour mark, and neves started to fray with the momenum seeming to now be with Utrecht, and at this point with the score combinations as they were across the matches at this point, a draw would have seen Celtic out! Trusty soon after scored the fourth to seal the game, pulling Celtic back two ahead and the game was really done. Great to grab a result and achievement after some thought times of late, but the performance did again show some of the best & worst of the current squad. Schemichel in particular was poor for the goal conceded. Lot of work still left to do.
“I have nothing to prove to anyone. I’m here to help my team. I don’t care about what the others think about me, you know?”
Ex-Celt Barkas now with FC Utrecht prematch
Morning Gossip: MON”The only guarantee of us getting in is winning the match, so we have to try & win that. So we watch them and at the same time, we are just trying to see about getting players in. Trust me on this one, there is not a division I’m trying to see what we can get.”
Mon prematch
“We knew the objective was to win the game and get through to the play-off round. “When the pressure was on we managed to deliver results. The mentality in the group has been amazing, the boys have been hungry to dig ourselves out of the hole we were in. “For the first 25-30 minutes I thought we were really good.” On potential January additions, McGregor adds: “We trust the club to get the players the manager and the staff want.”
McGregor
“Delighted with the result. Performance for most parts was really terrific. Our pressing was terrific and as a consequence, we got ourselves a couple of goals in front. “Not that you’re ever coasting, but we were doing splendidly. Then they get a goal back, it unnerves you a little bit and they got the second goal and you’re beginning to get a wee bit concerned because I thought we were flagging a bit. [Auston] Trusty comes up with a great header and we deserved to win the game. “You would have got long odds on us qualifying after four games. Great credit to the players. They worked tirelessly. I said to them before the game, last Thursday’s performance was magnificent, the performance in Feyenoord was great, so you don’t want that to count for nothing. We won and so we’re in the next stage. “I was concerned because we didn’t make that many changes after Sunday and I don’t think you can constantly press for 90 minutes. There are stages then where you have to sit back. We allow them in for their second goal and that put us on the back foot. “We win and it’s just nice to get through. Winning breeds confidence. “We are definitely making progress [on transfers], there’s no question about that.”
MoN
El Salto of KDS: “Think some of the players thought it was job done at 3-0 Seemed to lose or way either side of half time, but did enough in the end to seal the win Some nice football played, but some not so good stuff as well Hopefully we get Ferencvaros, I think we’d have a chance against them, not so much against Stuttgart.”
Italiabhoyf of KDS: Glad to get the win, but weirdly never felt in control of the game as soon as we went 3-0 ahead. I’d like to withdraw my previous prediction that we could win the Europa League. It’s clear that any decent team will control the midfield against us. Atmosphere was dreadful. Dutch fans were great, we were quiet as mice. No GB. No atmosphere. Desperately need a new GK, at least one midfielder, a winger and a striker.
Celtic Republic of Scotland @averagesoe.bsky.social · 42m Hopefully the lure of the knockout stage will make us a more attractive option to players but the big question is will the board be willing to open the golden biscuit tin before the window slams shut. I’m sure they are looking forward to Monday and spouting the usual excuse why they spent fuck all

Celtic progress to Europa League play-off round with 4-2 win over Utrecht
The European show goes on for Celtic, courtesy of a blistering opening 20 minutes against Utrecht that helped seal their passage into the play-off phase of the Europa League.
This 4-2 win did not come without a belch midway through the match when Utrecht whittled away at a three-goal deficit to move within one strike with half-an-hour to go, but the Dutch visitors showed why they came here with no hope of qualification themselves. They must be one of the poorest teams in the competition.
Celtic finish on 11 points and in 21st place. As a consequence they will play a two-legged tie to reach the last 16 against either Stuttgart or Ferencvaros, with the first leg at home on February 19. The draw takes place on Friday.
They will need to up their game, particularly defensively. Better teams will beat Celtic in Europe. This was another reminder that reinforcements are so desperately required in the final days of the transfer window.
The current crop did enough. The prolific Benjamin Nygren, Arne Engels and Auston Trusty got on the scoresheet, and there was help from their hapless opponents in an own goal and goalkeeping calamity from an old ‘friend’.
Celtic made the breakthrough on six minutes when Nygren tapped in from close range after a precise cutback from Kieran Tierney to get the ideal start.
They were given a bit of assistance from a former Celt in Utrecht goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas four minutes later. The Greek was a £5 million flop when bought from AEK Athens in 2020 and has since found sanctuary in the Netherlands. His return to Glasgow did not go well.
He left a pass out to his defender Mike van der Hoorn short and Nygren pounced. He squared the ball across goal and unfortunate Utrecht captain Nick Viergever put through his own net. Had he not, Daizen Maeda behind him would have capitalised.
Utrecht arrived with nothing but pride to play for but they appeared to abandon even the notion of scrapping for that. Come the 21st minute, they were 3-0 down. Referee Mohammad Al-Emara was advised to check a Dani de Wit handball in the box by VAR and he pointed to the spot. Arne Engels rattled the conversion high past Barkas.
Utrecht had brought a lively, noisy travelling support. Their passion did not diminish even if their team had given up the ghost. “Always look on the bright side of life,” the jolly Dutch bunch sung, before goading the home fans with “there’s only one team in Glasgow” and “we love you Rangers, we do”.
Utrecht were certainly winning the contest off the pitch and they made a minor statement on it right on 45 minutes. Celtic had been idling their way towards the break and the visitors seized upon the torpor when a De Wit fizzed a low shot past a stranded Kasper Schmeichel. The Danish keeper then did really well to turn a Niklas Vesterlund past the post.
It was a reminder that goals can be too easily nabbed off this Celtic team.
Utrecht were clearly imbued with some confidence by that strike and they were far more lively in the second period. Celtic Park got a little nervy – and the jitters increased significantly on 63 minutes when Adrian Blake curled a shot from range past Schmeichel.
The good thing for Celtic was that Utrecht were far from watertight. Celtic won a corner on 66 minutes and Trusty glanced a header high beyond Barkas to quell the threat of a comeback.

Celtic completed the league phase of their UEFA Europa League campaign with a 4-2 home win over FC Utrecht, and in the process ensuring progress to the play-off round of the competition.
Martin O’Neill’s side started the game on the front foot and established an emphatic three-goal lead inside the first 20 minutes.
Benjamin Nygren got the scoring underway after just six minutes when he fired home from close range.
Colby Donovan showed great initiative to take a quick corner, and when he threaded the ball through to Kieran Tierney inside the box, Tierney fired a low ball across the area which Nygren tapped home.
Just four minutes later it was 2-0, and this time Nygren contributed the assist, although it was Nick Viergever who steered the ball into his own net as Daizen Maeda looked to get on the end of the ball.
And on 19 minutes, the Italian referee was called to the VAR screen to review an incident inside the Utrecht box, the result of which was a penalty awarded to Celtic, with Arne Engels duly despatching the spot-kick to make it 3-0.
At this stage, the Dutch side looked down and out, although they were thrown a lifeline just before the break when Dani De Wit fired home.
And in added time, Kasper Schmeichel produced a great save to push a Niklas Vesterlund header round the post.

Both sides showed good attacking intent at the start of the second-half, and it took a good save from former Celtic keeper, Vasilis Barkas to deny Benjamin Nygren his second goal of the night after he got a shot on target from a good attacking move involving Callum McGregor and Yang.
But on 62 minutes, FC Utrecht scored their second goal of the night on the counter attack, with Adrian Blake firing beyond Kasper Schmeichel from outside the area.
However, within four minutes Celtic had restored their two-goal advantage, with Auston Trusty heading home an Arne Engels corner.
Celtic pushed forward in search of a fifth goal, while Utrecht continued to look dangerous on the break, and Liam Scales had to be alert to block a Dani de Wit shot from inside the box.
There was to be no further scoring in the game, with Celtic running out 4-2 winners on the night to book their place in the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League.

Benjamin Nygren’s 14 goal of the season put Celtic on their way to a 4-2 victory over FC Utrecht and a place in the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League.
The Swedish midfielder opened the scoring after just six minutes, and then provided an assist for Celtic’s second goal four minutes later, with Nick Viergever putting the ball into his own net.
And Martin O’Neill’s side will find out their play-off opponents on Friday, with either VfB Stuttgart or Ferencvaros set to face the Hoops.
Speaking to Celtic TV after the game, Benjamin Nygren said: “All we wanted tonight was to get the win and get to the next round, so I’m very happy.
“We spoke about it a lot, not to give them any time on the ball, and we came out flying, pressed them as hard as we could and we got three pretty quick goals just like we wanted.
“In football, every goal counts as much. I just try to be in the right positions all the time in the box and then balls will come.
“Either team (Stuttgart or Ferencvaros) will be fine. We’re just happy to get to the next round and we’re looking forward to doing well in this competition.”

Celtic kept their Europa League campaign alive with a deserved victory over winless Utrecht at Parkhead.
Goals from Benjamin Nygren and Arne Engels, either side of a Nick Viergever own-goal, put Martin O’Neill’s side 3-0 up inside 19 minutes before Dani de Wit pulled one back for the visitors with their first shot of the match.
Adrian Blake brought Utrecht back within one goal as his long-range strike beat Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, but Auston Trusty headed in Engels’ corner four minutes later to calm any nerves.
Having finished 21st in the league phase, Celtic will now face either Stuttgart or Ferencvaros in the knockout play-off round with the draw taking place on Friday (12:00 GMT).

O’Neill called for his players to go for it pre-match with qualification on the line and they flew out of the blocks against the Dutch outfit, who finish their European campaign with just one point.
Nygren tapped home Kieran Tierney’s cross from close range and they doubled their advantage when former Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas found Nygren with a slack pass.
The Swedish midfielder tried to square it for Daizen Maeda, but it was instead turned in by Viergever as the visitors compounded the initial error.
De Wit was then penalised for handball after a video assistant review (VAR) and Engels dispatched the penalty to put Celtic in total control.
Or so it seemed.
Schmeichel was unmoved as De Wit’s shot found the bottom corner and although he made an excellent save to tip Niklas Vesterlund’s header round the post, he was unable to keep out Blake’s shot down to his left and Celtic’s comfortable lead was suddenly nervy.
However, Trusty climbed highest to nod in a fourth and Celtic managed the remainder of the game to make sure their European campaign continues for two more matches at least.
Analysis: Job done for Celtic but question marks remain over Schmeichel
Celtic had one remit against Utrecht – win – and they did that comfortably in the end.
The fact that the scoreline could and should have been more will not bother O’Neill, and nor should it.
Progression was the be all and end all and could help attract much-needed recruits to the club before the transfer window closes on Monday.
One area of the squad they might be looking to strengthen is between the posts, given Schmeichel’s erratic form this season.
He made several excellent saves in last weekend’s Scottish Premiership draw against Hearts and the stop he made to deny Vesterlund on the stroke of half-time was quite superb.
However, the way he was rooted to the spot for De Wit’s goal was reminiscent of Bologna’s second goal in Celtic’s previous European outing and he will be disappointed to have been beaten by Blake’s strike from a good 30 yards out.
What’s next for Celtic?
O’Neill’s side host Falkirk on Sunday (15:00) in the Scottish Premiership as they try to make up ground on Rangers and Hearts above them.
Key stats
Celtic have now won five of their past six home games in European competition (incl. qualifiers) against sides from the Netherlands (L1), scoring 2- goals in each of those victories.
Thanks to Benjamin Nygren’s 6th minute strike, Nick Viergever’s 10th minute own goal and Arne Engels’s 19th minute penalty, Celtic registered the 10th quickest Europa League 3-0 lead and their fastest in any major European match.
Benjamin Nygren has 20 goal contributions across all competitions for Celtic this season (14 goals, six assists), the most by any Scottish Premiership player.
With his goal tonight, Celtic’s Auston Trusty became the first American defender to net multiple goals in the same major European campaign.
Celtic’s Callum McGregor started his 66th game in major European competition for Celtic tonight, with only Billy Bremner (76) and Peter Lorimer (73) starting more among Scottish midfielders overall.

Martin O’Neill guided Celtic into the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League with a 4-2 victory over FC Utrecht at home.
It gave the Hoops a total of 11 points from their eight league phase fixtures, with the manager responsible for seven of them.
Now he and his team wait to find out who they will face in the play-off – either VfB Stuttgart or Ferencvaros – and the Celtic manager is looking forward to that challenge when it comes next month.
Speaking about tonight’s 4-2 home win, Martin O’Neill told Celtic TV: “I’m absolutely delighted. We started off like a house on fire, we pressed strongly and got our rewards, and, to a certain extent, we were coasting at 3-0.
“We allowed them back into the game just before half-time and obviously the second goal that they score resurrects the game for them and it was a worrying few minutes after that. Then Trusty got the goal for us, but overall it was a terrific effort.
“We’ll enjoy it this evening for a little while and then get our minds ready for Sunday.”

Kieran Tierney played his part in Celtic’s 4-2 victory over FC Utrecht on Thursday night, providing a superb assist for Benjamin Nygren to open the scoring after just six minutes.
The victory has put the Hoops into the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League, and they will find out their opponents later this morning, either facing VfB Stuttgart or Fernecvaros.
Speaking to Celtic TV, Kieran Tierney said: “We had a few chances and we took them and that’s been the case this season – we’ve created a lot of chances and not took them but this time it was different.
“We had said that if the corner was on to play quick and just get the tempo of the game up, and it worked. The first corner we did it, everyone was alive to it and knew it was happening, so it was good.
“Especially here at Celtic Park with the fans behind you, you need to go at teams and we did that. The hard work that the boys have put in is amazing, especially up top because it’s a hard shift for them to press for 90 minutes but they were brilliant.
“It’s just building momentum. Winning games is what’s expected here and that’s what we want to do, and if we keep doing that, we can take it game by game, build it up and hopefully have a good end to the season.”
