Trivia
- KO: 20:00, Wednesday, Sky Sports
- Rearranged match as fixture due to heavy rain postponing original fixture, all top 3 sides have now played 29 games.
- All played 29pts Hearts 63pts +28GD, Celtic 58pts +22GD, Sevco 57pts +26GD. Motherwell just behidn but played 28 games on 53pts +29GD.
- Dane Murray gets injured in the warm-up! Centre-back Benjamin Arthur reveals he only found out he was starting 10 minutes before kick-off following an injury to Dane Murray in the warm-up. The Brentford loanee can be chuffed with his first start for the club, that’s for sure. “It shows you how quickly football can change,” the 20-year-old tells Sky Sports. “You have to be mentally prepared for everything. Hopefully the performance showed that as well.” Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo adds: “Full credit to him, he’s done unbelievable.”
- Videos on Iheanacho’s social media Instragram account seem to show him as if he is away from Celtic now! He was training down south with others and not in a Celtic top! Many were asking why he hasn’t been in the Celtic squad. Possibly he was down for further recovery etc.
- Martin O’Neill expects Alistair Johnston to return in time for Celtic’s post-split fixtures. It is a similar story for Callum Osmand. O’Neill described Kelechi Iheanacho’s fitness as a ‘concern’, but said the striker could feature against Aberdeen.
Summary
‘Nygren the difference again’
“It was a tough evening, which I expected anyway and we certainly got that. “And it was nice to come through and win the game, we scored early on in proceedings. “I felt as though we should’ve just asserted a bit more superiority, we allowed Aberdeen into the game. They get a penalty and then you’re forced in the second half to try to conjure something, which we did. “We could’ve scored a couple towards the end as well. It would’ve been nice if that was the case, it wasn’t though. “We showed resilience to fight it out towards the end.”
Martin O’Neill
“It was frustrating, I thought the boys put a good shift in, but at the end of the day we’ve still come out with zero points.” “They came back strong, worked really hard and got a goal back, and I thought we started the second half really well. We kept Celtic in their half. “Kevin [Nisbet] had a great header, it was a great save, but then we just lost our way a wee bit in the second half and looked a wee bit tired. “We just need to pick ourselves up and go again at the weekend.”
Aberdeen interim manager Peter Leven
Canberrabhoy of KDS:
Delighted with the win, Aberdeen being pish and we should be pumping etc was never going to be the case, although when KT got the goal I did think briefly we could be in for a nice 2 or 3 nil victory.
We started well, very lively, passing quickly and forward, got the goal and then from what I could see ( was watching at work on my phone ) we started to slow ot down, taking more touches and passing sideways and back and then they got the penalty ( Scales was poor ).
Massive save when the second half started from Sinisalo, we make the changes, Maeda as poor as his finishing was helped us to gain more control, and we looked far more threatening again.
Then Nygren gets the goal, I saw the reply and thought he was miles offside but it just goes to show how deceiving the camera angles can be. I thought we saw it out pretty well after that and should have had another goal or 2.
That moment when Reo went flying in on Cameron inside our box, my heart skipped a beat, he was very lucky not to catch him, I’m surprised Cameron didn’t go down as it looked like he possibly grazed him.

Pre Match Facts
Aberdeen remain winless in their last 33 meetings with
Celtic in all competitions (D7 L26) since a 1-0 league victory in May 2018.
Celtic have won 15 of their last 18 away league visits to Aberdeen (D3) since losing successive trips there in the 2015-16 season under Ronny Deila.
Aberdeen have lost two of their last three home league games (W1), more than in their previous eight beforehand (W3 D4 L1). The Dons could lose back-to-back league matches at Pittodrie for only the second time this season, having done so in their opening two home fixtures of this Scottish Premiership campaign.
Celtic have won 20 of their last 22 league matches played on a Wednesday, while the exceptions in this run were away defeats to Hibernian in May 2023 (2-4) and Dundee United in December 2025 (1-2).
Kevin Nisbet has scored a brace in both of his last two home league appearances for Aberdeen, and could score in three successive home matches in the Scottish Premiership for the very first time. Nisbet has also scored in two of his last three home league appearances against
Celtic.

Celtic substitute is the hero as second half strike earns victory in Aberdeen
Celtic called upon top scorer Benjamin Nygren in their hour of need and the midfielder duly delivered against Aberdeen to secure an important victory.
This was Celtic’s game in hand over title rivals Hearts and Rangers and was bracketed into the must-win category if they are to successfully defend their crown. They made heavy weather of this match in stages but headed back down the A90 with the full loot after prevailing 2-1.
Nygren came off the bench on 60 minutes and seven minutes later he provided the magic touch to land Celtic the winner. The visitors had taken an early lead through Kieran Tierney, but were pegged back by a Kevin Nisbet penalty and at times looked shaky when the scores were level.
As it is, job done for Martin O’Neill’s men. Celtic now move into second place in the league standings, five behind leaders Hearts. They leapfrog Rangers and are a point clear of them. Nine rounds of fixtures. The focus now turns to Ibrox, their second trip across Glasgow in a week, for their Scottish Cup quarter-final on Sunday.
This defeat condemned Aberdeen to bottom-six football for the second time in three seasons. Their miserable league form goes on, now with just one win in 13 top-flight matches. They are eight points clear of the relegation play-off places and will want to arrest such a slump before the split.
They are also still without a manager. Potential candidate Sandro Schwarz, wrapped up against the north-east chill and sporting a beige thermal hat, watched on from the Pittodrie Main Stand. Chairman Dave Cormack said on the eve of the match that the club will not rush an appointment. Caretaker boss Peter Leven will lead them into Saturday evening’s Scottish Cup quarter-final away at Championship side Dunfermline Athletic, which looks an awkward assignment.
Celtic were forced into a change just before kick off when centre-half Dane Murray pulled up injured. Brentford loanee Benjamin Arthur was summoned from the bench for his first start and only his second appearance since moving north. The even lesser-spotted Joel Mvuka made up the substitutes.
Celtic didn’t take long to find their stride. Their opener came on five minutes. Tierney scored it but the assist was the thing of beauty here. Luke McCowan’s corner was acrobatically hooked on by Liam Scales – not known for his suppleness in the opposition box – and Tierney darted in unmarked to prod home from close range past helpless Aberdeen goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov.
A feeling of dread swept through the home crowd at Pittodrie. They’ve seen their team take plenty of beatings from Celtic over the years and the visitors spent the next five minutes zipping the ball about, but without finding much cutting edge.
An overhit cross from Aberdeen full-back Alexander Jensen required turning over the bar by Viljami Sinisalo but that changed the flow of the game. The Dons grew into it more and were awarded the chance to level from the penalty when Liam Scales kicked through the back of Toyosi Olusanya. It was a clear foul and Nisbet sent Sinisalo the wrong way to level.
The equaliser gave Aberdeen belief and their midfield, driven on by Rangers loanee Lyall Cameron, started to compete better with Celtic. Nevertheless, clear-cut chances were few and far between at either end. Sebastian Tounekti slashed a shot into the side netting and a couple of other efforts were blocked.
In first-half stoppage time, Celtic claimed for a penalty when Tounekti’s cross struck the arm of Aberdeen defender Jack Milne. VAR Chris Graham took a look at it and decided it was not worthy of review. We went into the break all square.
Parity was so nearly ended just a couple of minutes into the second half when Mitchel Frame’s accurate cross was headed goalwards by Nisbet. The ball seemed to be arcing into the top corner but Sinisalo leapt across and turned it over the bar. It was a stunning save.
The second half had more tempo about it. Tounekti nearly got in behind the Aberdeen defence; at the other end, Milne sliced the ball over the bar from a promising position, albeit nose-bleed territory for a centre-half. The final half-hour was set up to be of the grandstand variety. Celtic needed a goal.
O’Neill turned to Daizen Maeda and Nygren – two eye-catching omissions from the starting XI – as they replaced the largely ineffective Tomas Cvancara and McCowan. Nygren, with 18 goals to his name before the match, was the great hope. Aberdeen boss Peter Leven also twisted, taking off Olusanya for Kenan Bilalovic.
Of course, it was going to be the Swede. Not Bilalovic, but Nygren. It took just seven minutes for him to make an impact. Julian Araujo slipped James Forrest in down the right and his cross was guided into the net by the 24-year-old. The goal survived a VAR check, with the Celtic man onside by the merest of fractions.
Not that he or the Celtic fans cared. They were back in front. Now it was all about seeing it out.
Maeda could have made life a whole lot easier for the champions on 71 minutes when the rapid Japanese forward pounced on a Milne slip. But in keeping with his composure throughout this season, he dragged his shot harmlessly wide of Mitov’s goal.
Celtic were now in the clear ascendancy but with only a one-goal advantage, they weren’t comfortable. Marcelo Saracchi blazed another good chance over the bar. In stoppage time, Hatate caused a scare with a rash tackle that didn’t connect with Cameron in the box. They continue to live on the edge.

Celtic move above Rangers into second place in the Scottish Premiership – and within five points of leaders Hearts – but were made to work hard for their win by determined hosts Aberdeen.
Substitute Benjamin Nygren scored the winner midway through the second half after Kieran Tierney’s early opener for the visitors had been cancelled out by Kevin Nisbet’s penalty.
Despite an improved and spirited Aberdeen performance, a fourth game without a victory leaves interim manager Peter Leven’s side 13 points behind Falkirk with their outside hopes of a top-six finish now extinguished.
Celtic avoided a second draw within four days after Sunday’s derby with Rangers to go eight unbeaten away from home and also stretch their unbeaten run against Aberdeen to an amazing 34 meetings.
Both sides were still feeling their way into the game when Celtic made the breakthrough from a corner after only five minutes.
Liam Scales then Tierney both lost their markers as the Republic of Ireland centre-half’s near-post overhead flick was poked home from within the six-yard box by the Scotland left-back.
A Tierney goal immediately after the break had hauled Celtic back into the game and towards an eventual draw away to city rivals Rangers, but this time they failed to build on a swift start.
The tenacious hosts worked their way back into the game and, after goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo was forced to turn a wayward Alexander Jensen cross over his own crossbar, the hosts were back level from the penalty spot.
Scales kicked the back of Toyosi Olusanya’s calf and strike partner Nisbet side-footed home his eighth goal of season.
That did sting Celtic into action, but Aberdeen survived wave after wave of attack before coming out with renewed energy after the break, Sinisalo saving superbly from a Nisbet header.
However, James Forrest and Nygren combined shortly after coming on as substitutes and the Swede prodded home the winger’s cross from 12 yards.
Cue a basketball-style finish with pressure at both ends, but it was Celtic who prevailed to enhance their chances of retaining the title.
Analysis: Subs rescue Celtic as Dons earn plaudits
O’Neill had said before kick-off that his side could not afford any more slip-ups in what has become an unprecedented four-horse race for the title, a defeat leaving Celtic just two points ahead of Motherwell.
He had already freshened up his side with four changes before being forced to hand on-loan Brentford centre-half Benjamin Arthur a first start after Dane Murray picked up an thigh injury in the warm-up.
The visitors showed few signs of fatigue from a fourth consecutive midweek fixture, but they again demonstrated the fragility that had already contributed to the departures of two managers and has started to reappear under their veteran interim boss.
There was no need this time for the late goals that have become habitual under O’Neill.
Instead, it was the depth of squad that came to Celtic’s rescue as veteran Forrest set up Nygren for his 19th goal of the season as the Swede avoided being caught offside by the length of a toenail.
While the Glasgow side head into their Scottish Cup quarter-final derby in renewed heart, Aberdeen will also take some positives into their tie away to Dunfermline Athletic.
Former Mainz, Hertha Berlin, Dinamo Moscow and New York Red Bulls boss Sandro Schwarz was an interested observer and, although chairman Dave Cormack insisting the German was merely one candidate to be appointed manager in the summer, he witnessed an improved performance.
No more so than Nisbet, who scored his third goal in four games against Celtic at Pittodrie, and found the net for the third successive game at home in the league.
Despite that, one win in seven outings remains a worry as the cup and avoiding relegation become Aberdeen’s priorities.
What they said
Aberdeen interim manager Peter Leven: “It was frustrating. I thought the boys put a good shift in, but at the end of the day we’ve still come out with zero points.
“They came back strong, worked really hard and got a goal back – and I thought we started the second half really well. We kept Celtic in their half.
“Kevin [Nisbet] had a great header, it was a great save, but then we just lost our way a wee bit in the second half and looked a wee bit tired.”
Celtic interim manager Martin O’Neill: “It was a tough evening, which I expected anyway and we certainly got that.
“And it was nice to come through and win the game. We showed resilience to fight it out towards the end.”

It was another big goal from Benjamin Nygren that sealed all three points for the Hoops against Aberdeen.
The Swede has picked up a knack of scoring against the Dons, and he made it three goals in three games against the Pittodrie side on Wednesday evening.
His latest strike proved to be a crucial one, ultimately sealing the win for Celtic on their travels.
Having grabbed his 19th strike of the campaign, which was also his 15th in the league, the midfielder was delighted to make an impact off the bench.
Speaking in the aftermath of the win, Nygren reflected on what could be another important three points in a hard-fought win.
“Aberdeen is a difficult away game. It was a hard-fought win today. But, in the end I think we deserved that result.
‘I’m very happy to be able to contribute to the team, and that is what I want to keep on doing.’
“That has always been my mentality since I was a small kid, that when you come off the bench, you want to come in and decide the game.
“Especially when it was 1-1. We needed to get the win, go forward. So, I’m happy to score today.
“It is so many games, but we have been staying together the whole season, and we will continue to do that.”

Celtic picked up what could be a valuable win on the road as the Bhoys ran out 2-1 winners over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.
Despite scoring after just five minutes, the Hoops seen Kieran Tierney’s early opener cut out in the first half as the home side levelled things up.
But up stepped Benjamin Nygren to score another big goal, producing the goods to seal all three points on the night.
And after watching his side fight it out to secure the win in Aberdeen, O’Neill was pleased with the spirit that his squad showed as he praised the group.
Reflecting on the match, O’Neill said: “We got off to a great start, scoring very early on and that was great! I felt as if we didn’t really go and push on, maybe try get a second goal.
“They get back into with the penalty, and then we had to score a really good goal from our view point.
“Then had to survive to see if it was onside or offside, but it was a big win for us today. A big, big win.
‘In terms of confidence building, and all that type of stuff, it is great.’
“That’s what you’re hoping for,” Martin continued. “You are hoping that players can come off the bench and make an impact.
“Remember, this was our third game in six days. So, that’s every two days we’re playing matches essentially.
“And that can take its toll. So, we have had to use the substitutes in positive ways.
“All of them have come on in recent times and made big, big impacts, which is great. Sometimes it doesn’t work like that. Sometimes somebody comes on and doesn’t get into the game.
“But it’s nice to know that we think we can make some changes, and maybe something might happen from it.
“I’m obviously delighted. There is a great spirit amongst the players, and I don’t think that should be denied in any aspects because sometimes that is what is keeping us going.”

Celtic took all three points with a 2-1 win away against Aberdeen tonight. The Hoops took an early lead through Kieran Tierney which was cancelled out shortly after when the home side equalised from the penalty spot, but a Benjamin Nygren goal in the second half gave Martin O’Neill’s men the victory they deserved.
Big questions were asked of the Hoops on Sunday at Ibrox after a poor start to the match, but there were no such concerns at Pittodrie tonight where Kieran Tierney followed up his weekend goal with an early strike this evening.
With five minutes played, a corner from Luke McCowan was flicked on acrobatically by Liam Scales towards Kieran Tierney, and the left back made no mistake as he smashed the ball in to the roof of the net to make it 1-0.
Celtic’s lead could have been doubled soon after when Callum McGregor fired a shot towards goal from the edge of the box, but Aberdeen keeper Dimitar Mitov was able to make the save.
At the other end, Viljami Sinisalo was called in to action when a cross from Alexander Jensen began to drop towards goal, but the Finnish keeper punched the ball over the bar to safety.
In the 18th minute, the home side were awarded a penalty kick after a foul from Liam Scales on Toyosi Olusanya, however replays showed that it was a harsh decision, with the contact between the players very much at the soft end of the scale. Kevin Nisbet stepped up to take the spot kick for his side and found the back of the net to make it 1-1.
Celtic quickly went back to work hunting for another goal to retake the lead and Sebastian Tounekti was unfortunate not to do just that when his effort from inside the box whistled by the post and hit the side netting.
Kieran Tierney found himself with another couple of shooting opportunities before the end of the half but his efforts from the edge of the box were blocked.
Just before the break, Celtic had a penalty claim of their own waved away after a cross from Tounekti hit the arm of Jack Milne, but after waiting for communication from Chris Graham on VAR, referee Nick Walsh waved play on.

Early in the second half Vil Sinisalo produced a stunning save to deny Kevin Nisbet, with the Celtic keeper using his agility to dive across goal quickly and push the headed effort over the bar.
Then came a chance for Martin O’Neill’s men, when a well-taken corner from Luke McCowan was headed just wide of the post by Liam Scales, with the Irishman not able to fully connect with the ball.
The home side looked dangerous in the early stages of the second period and just shy of the hour mark a big chance fell to Jack Milne on the edge of the box, but his effort sailed wide of the target.
Soon after, Martin O’Neill made his first changes of the match, bringing Tomas Cvancara and Luke McCowan off for Daizen Maeda and Benjamin Nygren. Those changes were followed by another double-substitution as Yang and Kieran Tierney made way for James Forrest and Marcelo Saracchi.
Two of those subs, Forrest and Nygren, made an instant impression on the match, with James Forrest’s ball across the box flicked beyond the Aberdeen keeper by Benjamin Nygren, with the Swede’s 15th league goal of the season making it 2-1 to Celtic.
Daizen Maeda found himself with a golden opportunity a few minutes after Nygren’s goal when a slip from Jack Milne left the Japanese forward one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his shot went wide of the target.
With five minutes to go, Martin O’Neill made his final change of the match as Colby Donovan was brought on for Julian Araujo. That swap marked Celtic’s third defensive change of the evening, though the first took place before a ball was kicked as Dane Murray, who had been named in the initial starting XI, was replaced by Benjamin Arthur.
Aberdeen fashioned a chance in stoppage time when they were able to flash a ball across the face of the Celtic goal, but a sliding clearance from Marcelo Saracchi dealt with the danger.
The home crowd urged their side forward in final few minutes of the match, sensing that an equaliser could be achieved, but the Celts held firm and the final whistle brought great celebrations in the away end as the travelling Celtic faithful enjoyed a huge three points on the road.
