Statement from the Scottish FA head of refereeing and it said, “The entire incident was checked, including the handball. “The ball does strike the arm of the Celtic attacker however this is not a punishable handball, as it is a consequence of his playing action and it was completely accidental. “The laws of the game are clear regarding handball and an immediate goal being scored, it only applies when the player who handles the ball is the one who subsequently scores. “As it was another attacker who scored, this provision does not apply. “I note that at half-time this was compared to the Falkirk disallowed goal. The VAR deemed that handball to be punishable in law. “In our opinion however, these are completely different incidents and should not be considered comparable.”

Celtic are through to the quarter-final of the League Cup after a resounding 4-0 win over Dundee United at Tannadice with Auston Trusty, Camilo Durán, Sebastian Tounekti and Benjamin Nygren all getting on the scoresheet.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was the first to fire a shot towards goal, and although his effort from edge of the box was saved by Jack Walton with no issue, the move which led to the chance saw the Hoops move the ball from back to front brilliantly.
Julius Eskesen came close to firing the home side into the lead with just over 10 minutes gone, though thankfully for Celtic his powerful strike from outside the box crashed off the base of the post and spun away to safety.
The post came to Celtic’s rescue again just moments later, and this time it was Emmanuel Agyei with a shot from the edge of the box that rebounded off the woodwork.
In the 22nd minute, Celtic took the lead with a goal that will have pleased new set-piece coach Ross Grant. Benjamin Nygren fired a well-delivered cross in from a corner which was met at the front post by Auston Trusty, whose glancing header sent the ball in to the far corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Just a few minutes later, it was 2-0, with Camilo Durán grabbing his first competitive Celtic goal. Benjamin Nygren was involved again, sending a clever pass through to Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain in the box, which the Englishman fired across the face of goal. Kasper Høgh tried to divert it into the net, but when he was unable to do so, Durán was there to open his Celtic account and double the Hoops’ lead.
Nygren, who played a part in both of Celtic’s first-half goals, came close to getting his name on the scoresheet with five minutes of the half remaining when he shot from the edge of the area after a lay off from Kasper Høgh, but his effort was blocked just a few yards from goal.

After hitting the post twice in the first half, the woodwork prevented Dundee United again at the start of the second 45. This time, Zac Sapsford’s powerful effort from 18-yards out rattled the crossbar, and Celtic’s two-goal lead remained intact.
After weathering Dundee United’s pressure in the opening exchanges of the second half, Celtic extended their lead in the 53rd minute with a brilliant goal.
The move started with Kasper Høgh holding the ball up in the middle of the park before slipping a pass to Benjamin Nygren. The Swede in turn found Sebastian Tounekti, who cut inside from the left wing and sent a tidy shot beyond the reach of Jack Walton and into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 and put the tie beyond Jim Goodwin’s men.
Just before the hour mark, Martin O’Neill made his first change of the evening, swapping Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Mika Baur, with the latter making his debut after joining the club during the week.
The German midfielder made an instant impact, finding Tounekti with a clever flick on 35 yards from goal. Tounekti in turn found Benjamin Nygren who produced a sensational finish from just inside the area to make it 4-0.
With Celtic’s place in the League Cup quarter-final secured, Martin O’Neill rang the changes with 25 minutes left to play, bringing Dane Murray, James Forrest and Luke McCowan on for Auston Trusty, Benjamin Nygren and Kasper Høgh.
Another of Celtic’s new signings, Egyptian winger Haissem Hassan came off the bench for his debut with 20 minutes of the match remaining, replacing the scorer of Celtic’s third goal, Sebastian Tounekti.
In the dying minutes of the game, Dundee United came close to a consolation goal, but once again the woodwork denied the home side, and Celtic ended the match with a 4-0 win.
Next up, Martin O’Neill’s men turn their attentions to Europe and the visit of Austrian side LASK to Celtic Park in the Champions League play-off first leg on Wednesday.

Celtic’s strong start to the season continued as they swept past Dundee United to book a place in the League Cup quarter-finals.
First-half goals from Auston Trusty and Camilo Duran put the visitors in control, Sebastian Tounekti scored from a counter-attack to end the tie as a contest, and Benjamin Nygren added a fabulous fourth as Celtic eased into the next round.
United struck the woodwork five times but could not find a way through and will be left to rue both their profligacy and defensive slackness.
Martin O’Neill returned to the Celtic dugout after missing last weekend’s Scottish Premiership victory over Kilmarnock following a brief hospital stay.
His side enjoyed most of the ball early on at Tannadice but survived a double scare when Julius Eskesen, then Emmanuel Agyei, saw efforts come back off the same post as United threatened an opener.
The first goal instead came at the other end as Trusty met Benjamin Nygren’s corner with a lovely glancing header that beat Jack Walton.
With United still reeling, Celtic struck again two minutes later.
Neat build-up play allowed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to break into the box and square for Kasper Hogh. He could not supply the finish, but Duran was on hand to prod home from close range.
United wanted the goal ruled out for a handball from Hogh, but a VAR check found it was not deliberate and the goal stood.
United had a penalty appeal for a handball against Oxlade-Chamberlain waved away, then they struck the woodwork for a third time early in the second half when a rocket from Zac Sapsford crashed off the crossbar.
Celtic effectively ended the contest, though, when they broke quickly and Tounekti cut inside Joshua Rawlins and tucked a neat finish past Walton.
Bert Esselink’s powerful header looked set to pull one back, but the curse of the crossbar struck yet again.
Mika Baur came off the bench for his Celtic debut and the German midfielder was involved as the ball was worked to Nygren, who rifled a wonderful strike into the top corner as Celtic marched into the last eight.
There was still time for United to hit the frame of the goal one last time, a long-range effort from Mehdi Merghem kissing the junction of crossbar and post.
Analysis: New-look Celtic look the part
After a tumultuous campaign last season and a summer of uncertainty in the transfer market, the pieces look now to be falling into place for this Celtic in a fashion that is ominous for the rest of Scottish football.
They gave up some chances, but there was always the sense that the champions just had too many threats for United to contain.
The physicality, movement and work-rate of Hogh, allied to the pressing and pace of Duran, caused all sorts of problems for the home defence.
Tounekti’s final product can still often frustrate, but he was a constant menace and took his goal well. Despite the significant loss of Daizen Maeda in the summer, the Celtic forward line is looking strong.
Of course, the true test will come against LASK in Champions League qualifying on Wednesday, but with Baur and Haissem Hassan getting their debuts at Tannadice, O’Neill got what he wanted in their final match before bouncing into Europe.
United manager Jim Goodwin said of last weekend’s 4-0 Premiership defeat to Hearts that the scoreline was not a fair reflection of the game.
He may feel similarly about this game, given his side fashioned a number of chances and were denied five times by the woodwork.
There was no lack of desire on show, but Celtic’s superior quality, particularly in that final third, ultimately proved the difference.
