1895-04-06: Celtic 0-4 Queen’s Park, Friendly

Match Pictures | Matches: 1894 – 18951887-1900

Trivia

  • Friendly played whilst players away to play for Scotland, 3-0 defeat!
  • Queens’ Park: Bob Macfarlane was the regular, his younger brother, John, also played in this position for the Strollers and it`s entirely feasible that the Hampden committee might have taken this opportunity to give John a late season 1st XI run out.
  • This game between two of the country`s biggest clubs couldn`t tempt many to Celtic Park for a mere friendly.

Summary

With Celtic`s Dans, McArthur and Doyle, off playing for Scotland at Goodison Park and Queen`s Park sans Willie Gulliland, Tom Waddell and Willie Lambie also engaged in the Scots 3-0 defeat both clubs took the opportunity to throw on some reserves. One such, debutant Tom Crookston, flung over an inviting cross after five minutes which Tom Dunbar missed and Willie Stewart slammed the opener past Joe Cullen. David Muir winkled the ball out of a scrimmage in front of the home goal and scored a second Spiders goal and then just before half time Davie Stewart tried his luck from 20 yards – 3-0! With the breeze behind them in the second half, Sandy McMahon and John Ferguson tested Kenny Anderson in the  visitors goal but in reality Celtic`s makeshift XI were well beaten before Willie Stewart breasted home a fourth goal near the end.
