Haissem Hassan featured for Egypt against Argentina at this year’s World Cup

Celtic have signed Real Oviedo winger Haissem Hassan, whose dazzling performance against Argentina took Egypt to the brink of knocking out Lionel Messi’s side in one of the games of this summer’s World Cup.
The 24-year-old, who is left-footed but often plays on the right, has agreed a four-year deal with the option of a further year.
Hassan played just 126 minutes at the World Cup because a delay in registering the former France youth international meant he missed the group phase but his profile was raised when he finally featured.
He came on a second-half substitute in Egypt’s last-32 penalty shootout win over Australia then tormented Argentina as the Pharaohs were denied a famous win in controversial circumstances.
The Paris-born forward has been with Real Oviedo for two years, having moved regularly between three other Spanish clubs since moving from boyhood club Chateauroux in 2020.
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill stated his desire for quality over quantity in replenishing a squad that lost more than a dozen players since last season’s Premiership and Scottish Cup double.
Hassan is Celtic’s third summer signing as the important Champions League play-off with LASK looms next Wednesday.
Denmark striker Kasper Hogh has joined in a reported £11m deal from Bodo/Glimt while Colombian forward Camilo Duran moved from Qarabag for an undisclosed fee.
“It is a great moment and a real honour for me to join Celtic,” Hassan told club media.
‘When I heard about Celtic being interested in me, I had to get here and be part of the club.”
O’Neill added: “The club has done really well to secure a player of such quality, with a number of other clubs interested in him.
“He is someone who I think has the ability and experience to do very well for us, performing at a high level in domestic and international football.
“I know he is excited about being with us and I am sure our fans will enjoy the energy and attacking intent which Haissem will bring to matches.”
Argentina complete extraordinary comeback to beat Egypt
Hassan started Egypt’s last-16 match with Argentina and set up Mostafa Zico’s goal, skipping past Enzo Fernandez before drilling in a precise delivery to help put Egypt 2-0 up.
However, it was Egypt’s infamous disallowed goal in their agonising 3-2 defeat by the defending champions that showcased Hassan’s direct running and dynamic dribbling qualities.
Bursting forward from the right-back area, he evaded two challenges in a 60-yard run before threading a pass through for Mohamed Salah, who teed up Zico.
Across his two World Cup performances, Hassan registered nine dribble attempts at a rate of 6.4 per 90 minutes.
What is Hassan’s back story?
Hassan was born in France and represented Les Bleus at under-17 and under-18 level before switching allegiances and making his senior international debut for Egypt, his father’s birthplace, earlier this year.
He started his club career in central France at Chateauroux, featuring initially for their B team and then the senior team in the lower leagues.
A move to Spain’s Villarreal followed in 2020 where he turned out for their B team, then went on loan to Mirandes before returning to the Yellow Submarine for his first taste of top-flight football in La Liga.
Another loan, to Sporting Gijon, followed and Hassan stayed in the second tier before a move to Oviedo in 2024.
He helped the club win promotion in his first season, scoring four goals and setting up three, but the going was far tougher in La Liga last term.
Hassan contributed three assists and could not muster a goal in 37 appearances, 20 of those from the start, as Oviedo finished bottom to immediately drop back down.
His xG (expected goals) of 0.15 last season hints at a paucity of clear chances in a team that were the lowest scorers in the division by a distance.
Where will he fit in new-look Celtic attack?
Kasper Hogh is an out and-out-striker, while fellow new arrival Duran, who can play wide or through the middle, is left-footed but has been deployed on the right wing in Celtic’s opening two games of the season.
That right-wing berth would likely become Hassan’s, with Duran shifting over to the left in place of Yang Hyun-jun.
Manager O’Neill has also hinted at playing two up top, which would mean a Hogh-Duran front pairing and Hassan providing service on the right with Yang on the left.
That would give Celtic’s attack a similar look to that of the Gordon Strachan era, when Shunsuke Nakamura and either Aiden McGeady or Shaun Maloney operated as inverted wingers, supporting a central pair of strikers – typically Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink with Giorgios Samaras or Scott McDonald.
Celtic’s link-up play really stretched Kilmarnock in the 5-1 weekend win, with hat-trick scorer Hogh coming deep and going long to combine with his team-mates.
The wingers and midfielders got into advanced positions throughout, with three different players providing assists for Hogh’s goals.
Adding Hassan offers Celtic a fresh and exciting option in a fluid attack.

Celtic are delighted to announce the signing of Egyptian international winger, Haissem Hassan from Real Oviedo on a four-year deal with the option of a further year, subject to international clearance.
The 24-year-old, who was in impressive form for Egypt during the recent World Cup, becomes the latest addition to Martin O’Neill’s squad and will wear the number 23 jersey for the Scottish Champions.
Born in France, he began his professional career with Châteauroux before moving to Spain in 2020 to join Villarreal.
He went on to gain further experience with Mirandés and Sporting Gijón before signing for Real Oviedo in the summer of 2024.
Hassan played an important role as Oviedo secured promotion to La Liga during his first season at the club and featured regularly in the Spanish top flight last term.
Now, after completing his move to Glasgow, the winger is looking forward to beginning the latest chapter of his career in the Hoops.
Haissem Hassan said: “It is a great moment and a real honour for me to join Celtic, a phenomenal club with such a brilliant history and wonderful supporters.
‘When I heard about Celtic being interested in me, I had to get here and be part of the club.’
“I am really looking forward to getting to know all my team-mates and facing the challenges we have ahead of us. I want to play my part in bringing success to our fans.”
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill said: “We are delighted to bring Haissem to Celtic and I think the club has done really well to secure a player of such quality, with a number of other clubs interested in him.
“He is someone who I think has the ability and experience to do very well for us, performing at a high level in domestic and international football.
“I know he is excited about being with us and I am sure our fans will enjoy the energy and attacking intent which Haissem will bring to matches. I hope he will become a very important member of our squad going forward.”

Haissem Hassan is delighted to have joined Celtic, with the 24-year-old Egyptian internationalist signing for the Scottish Champions on a four-year deal, with the option of a further year.
He joins from Spanish side, Real Oviedo, and also on the back of an impressive World Cup campaign with Egypt where he helped his country reach the last 16 of the tournament.
Now, having signed for Martin O’Neill’s side, he’s looking forward to life as a Celt.
And speaking exclusively to CelticPlayer at Lennoxtown in his first interview as a Celtic player, Haissem Hassan said: “I’m really grateful to be here and really happy.
“Celtic is a massive club. When I was growing up, the club was always in the Champions League and had big players. I’m really looking forward to getting on the pitch with the guys.”
A direct and skilful winger who is comfortable operating on either flank, Hassan will add pace, creativity and strong one-on-one ability to the Celtic attack.
Explaining what supporters can expect to see from him, he said: “For me, football is all about enjoyment, and my first job is to bring enjoyment to the fans who come to the stadium.
“From a football perspective, I would say I’m a skilful winger who likes one-versus-one situations and combining with my team-mates.
“I’m still only 24 and I have a lot to improve on, but I hope I can show the best of myself.”
The Egyptian internationalist spent the past six years playing in Spain, but he was already familiar with Celtic and the size of the club before the opportunity to move to Glasgow arose.
“At 24, I think it’s a good moment for me to move away from Spain. I’ve been there for six years,” he said.
“With Celtic’s history, all the great players, the fans and the atmosphere, I think this is the perfect moment for me.
‘I know I’m joining a big club, the biggest club in Scotland, and I’m really looking forward to taking the next step.’
Hassan believes his experiences in French and Spanish football have helped him become a more complete player, while moving abroad at a young age also allowed him to develop away from the pitch.
He said: “I experienced two different styles of football, which made me a more complete player. On a personal level, it was quite a challenge leaving France at 18, discovering a new country and learning a new language.
“That’s what I want to do here as well – learn English, experience a new culture and discover a new style of football. I’m really excited about it.”
Hassan represented France at youth level before making his senior international debut for Egypt and arrives at Celtic with experience on the biggest stage, having featured for his country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
The winger particularly impressed during Egypt’s last 16 meeting with defending world champions Argentina, although his side were ultimately eliminated following a dramatic 3-2 defeat.
“It was a massive honour and I was very proud to represent Egypt at the World Cup,” Hassan said.
“It’s a huge country where we absolutely love football, and we could feel all that love during the tournament. It’s every player’s dream to represent their country at a competition like that.”
With domestic and European football on the horizon, the winger is determined to make an impact and contribute to further success for the club.
“At Celtic, everything is about winning, and that’s what I want,” he added.
“We need to prove that we are still the best team in Scotland, qualify for the Champions League and have a good run in Europe.”
