Summary

2026

In 2026, to give the Old Masters Six-a-side competition a lift, a rebrand using the old Tennent Sixes was done to resuscitate the competition. However, notably for this rebooted competition, this time the players are old former players and NOT the current first team players, so really not over comparable. Still good to see lots of old faces in the Hoops again (and some surprises too!). It was played during the international break,

Incredibly, Celtic won the first tournament in October 2026, despite having  a woeful record in the old Tennent Sixes, and as NO Celtic players ended up playing for the Scotland first team, arguably there was greater interest in this competition from a few. Celtic won the final 5-4 v TheRangers, a shock result as Celtic had been hammered 7-1 earlier in the competition by the same side! TheRangers players didn’t take it too well with a bit of a tantrum in the dressing roomafter the final defeat with a short video going viral.

Regardless, well done to the former Celtic players to relive some glory again in the Hoops.

Celtic won the Tennent’s Sixes with a 5-4 victory over Rangers in the final, as the competition made a return after an absence of 33 years.

All 12 SPFL Premiership sides took part in the two-day tournament at the Braehead Arena, and it was the Hoops who ultimately lifted the trophy on Sunday night after a thrilling derby victory in the final.

The Saturday session saw the team of former Celtic players win their opening game 5-2 against Kilmarnock, but they then suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat to Rangers on Saturday night.

Sunday saw the Hoops beat St Mirren 4-0 to set up a quarter-final clash with Falkirk, which Celtic won 6-3. And in the semi-final, St Johnstone were defeated 6-1.

That meant the second Glasgow derby of the competition, and Celtic twice found themselves two goals behind in the final but they fought back, with Gary Hooper scoring the all-important goal to give Celtic a 5-4 win and see them lift the Tennent’s Sixes trophy.

The former Celts who took part were: Barry John Corr, Charlie Mulgrew, Glenn Loovens, Efe Ambrose, Jonny Hayes, Aiden McGeady, Gary Hooper, Joe Ledley, Derek Rio

Celtic celebrate winning the Tennents Sixes

It might have taken 33 years, but the Tennent’s Sixes has a new set of champions – after Celtic lifted the new trophy following an extraordinary 5-4 win over rivals Rangers in the Final.

What made it even more incredible was that Rangers had won 7-1 in the side’s previous clash just yesterday evening.

Fans were treated to a wonderful weekend of non-stop action as the stars of yesteryear rolled back the years to produce some sensational indoor soccer.

From Frazer Wright’s industrial challenge on Morgaro Gomis on Day One, to Robbie Winters needing to procure a shirt from a fan in the crowd – AND get it printed by the Celtic club shop in Braehead after being drafted in as a last-minute replacement, the weekend’s action had it all and we were treated to an exceptional final to cap things off.

Rangers finished as top scorers with 33 goals, against Celtic’s 27, but despite looking like tournament favourites throughout, they fell at the last after an inspired Celtic display in the final.

Generations have came and gone since Partick Thistle reigned supreme in the last tournament at Glasgow’s SECC in 1993, but it will now be Celtic who have their name as the first on the new trophy.

Celtic seal trophy with win over Rangers as Tennent’s Sixes returns

Celtic striker Gary Hooper bagged a hat-trick as his side twice came back from two goals down to win the revamped Tennent’s Sixes with a remarkable 5-4 win over Rangers in the final at the Braehead Arena on Sunday night.

Having been downed 7-1 by their Glasgow rivals in the group stage of the competition on Saturday, Celtic responded on day two of the tournament to reach the final, before taking the title with a comeback victory thanks to Hooper’s treble, plus goals from Aiden McGeady and Derek Riordan. Charlie Adam, Kirk Broadfoot, Martyn Waghorn and a Glenn Loovens own goal were on target for Rangers.

Back after a 33-year absence, the Sixes was an iconic staple of the Scottish football calendar between 1984 and 1993, when current squad members competed for the trophy. However, the redesigned tournament returned to Glasgow for a two-day event this weekend with a slight twist, as squads were made up of former players and legends instead.

Speaking after the victory, Celtic’s Charlie Mulgrew, who celebrated wildly in front of the Rangers bench at the full-time whistle, admitted the win was inspired by the “hurt” his teammates felt just 24 hours earlier, saying: “I don’t know the last time I felt adrenaline running like that. I’ll probably regret it later! You saw Charlie Adam’s celebration and how Rangers celebrated last night. It annoys you. We got battered 7-1.

“We know our careers are done, but you still want to compete and we could feel that. That defeat yesterday hurt us. I know we’re not athletes anymore, but when you play you want to win. Especially when you’re playing Rangers and you’re getting booed. They were a good young team, with a few players who have just retired. We’re delighted to get the win and it’s extra sweet after the first result. After the game last night, I was disappointed and trying to tell myself it wasn’t the end of the world.

“But it’s really hard. It hurts. That’s probably why we played at the level we did. We have that drive. Sometimes it spills over. I don’t think any of the tackles went too far. A bit of emotion came out. It never leaves you. We were out last night for a bit of team bonding. That sorted us out. I’m not sure if I can do two on the trot. I’ll hopefully sleep well if I can calm down a bit.”

Celtic manager for the day, Tom Boyd, echoed Mulgrew’s thoughts and admits the team were driven to respond after being tanked by their rivals the day prior. “It’s especially nice against your nearest rivals,” said Boyd. “It was a bit of a humiliation on Saturday night. We let ourselves down in the first game against Rangers and we tried to rectify it. The boys learned from it and dug deep. It doesn’t matter if it’s tiddlywinks, the boys are professional guys and they want to win. I was going to go home afterwards, but I had an arrangement with my wife that I could stay out a bit longer as a special bonus.”

Beginning on Saturday afternoon, the fast-paced, short-format knockout tournament included all 12 current Scottish Premiership sides at the well attended event, which allowed fans to a chance to see their heroes of yonder year in action once more at the 4,000 capacity home of EIHL ice hockey club, the Glasgow Clan.

Former Hearts legend Rudi Skacel had stolen the headlines on day one, as he came back to terrorize Hibs once again. The Czech striker, who scored twice in the famous 5-1 Scottish Cup final win against them in 2012, bagged the only goal of the game as Hearts downed their rivals 1-0 in the opening session. He would find the target again in their defeat to Motherwell, but an injury ruled him out of action on day two as the Jambos disappointingly exited the competition at the group stage following a thumping 5-0 defeat to Falkirk.

Rangers’ Waghorn had also made a major impact on day one for his Rangers side, with the 36-year-old scoring five goals in the demolition of Old Firm rivals Celtic, and the English striker shone once again as his side made it throughout to the knockout stages with a thumping 5-1 win over Kilmarnock in their final group game. A 4-0 win over Dundee saw them navigate the quarter-final stage.

Paired with Hibs in the semi-final, the Edinburgh side had fought their way to the final four after shrugging off Saturday’s 1-0 group stage defeat to Hearts to reach the knockout stages. However, they were no match for a Rangers side captained by former Jambos midfielder Andy Halliday as they went down to a 4-1 defeat.

Celtic, who had beaten St Johnstone 6-1 at the semi-final stage, were the final obstacle Rangers had to overcome. It looked like Barry Ferguson’s side would run out comfortable victors when they first went 2-0 up in the final, then 4-2 ahead in the second-half. However, Boyd’s men responded in stunning fashion to down their rivals at the death and take home the Tennent’s Sixes trophy.

Less than 24 hours after being thrashed 7-1 by their Old Firm rivals, Celtic had the final say as they were crowned Tennent’s Sixes champions.

Following a humiliating Glasgow derby defeat on Saturday night, the Hoops twice fought back from two goals behind in Sunday’s showpiece final to defeat Rangers 5-4 in an extraordinary nine-goal thriller.

However, the dramatic comeback clearly didn’t sit well in the Gers dressing room, with leaked footage capturing a heated exchange between two of their players.
A video circulating online shows an unnamed opposition player walking through the changing area moments after Celtic’s triumph.
One player – who appears to be Kirk Broadfoot – can be heard criticising goalkeeper Lee Robinson for conceding five goals, reports the Daily Record.
He can be heard ranting: “You’re diving out the way. You had f***ing seven shots this tournament. Mate, you’re meant to be a goalie. Take it on the f***ing dish!”.

Robinson, meanwhile, responds furiously with: “Shut the f*** up!”.

Despite appearing to be the tournament favourites throughout, a Rangers side featuring several recently retired players stumbled at the final hurdle as Celtic claimed the trophy after a 33-year absence.

Gary Hooper’s hat-trick, alongside goals from Aiden McGeady and Derek Riordan, overturned strikes from Charlie Adam, Kirk Broadfoot and Martyn Waghorn, as well as a Glenn Loovens own goal, in a remarkable final at the Braehead Arena. Hoops manager Tom Boyd conceded that the triumph was made all the sweeter given their thrashing at the hands of Rangers on the opening night.

He said: “It’s especially nice against your nearest rivals. It was a bit of a humiliation on Saturday night. We let ourselves down in the first game against Rangers and we tried to rectify it.
“The boys learned from it and dug deep. It doesn’t matter if it’s tiddlywinks, the boys are professional guys and they want to win.
